The Grand Chrono'nauts Tea at the Brooklyn Indie Fair yesterday was quite a success... so much so that all the attendees couldn't quite fit into the tent. I did not stay long because my leg is still in a cast boot and it was not an ideal place for a cripple hobbling around with a cane. But I caught a glimpse of some familiar faces: [info]jaborwhalky and [info]squirrelmadness, of course, along with [info]dreamshadows in the fashion show, and [info]thatjazz and [info]isee4dimensions milling about. There were lots of beautiful handcrafted items for sale at the vendors' tables. And the fashion show was amazing. I caught the second half of it, thought my vantage point was less than ideal, but I had a great view of the hats and a glimpse of the outfits as the models were exiting the runway (at first I thought everyone in front was freakishly tall until I realized the pavement was sloping downward). I especially liked the clipper ship headpiece and the man's cape reminiscent of an Iverness. Lots of male models which was a pleasant surprise. I missed the Q&A, the photo booth, tarot readings, cordials, free food, and probably lots of other fantastic stuff, but the biggest treat of all was just looking at the outfits of the attendees. Lots of casual steampunk and some really wonderful coats and jackets - I especially admired one that looked as if it were sewn out of fleecy sweatshirt material but had all the detailing of a Regency style frock coat. The criers for the steampunk Twelfth Night production were beautifully dressed and we chatted for a few minutes about my costume. I tried taking photographs of the miliuex but everytime I lined up a good one, a bunch of people in baggy tee shirts drifted into the frame so unfortunately I don't have any photos of everyone else, but I am sure that others will post them. Here's one of my frontier costume:

I love it. You look so amazing! The old west is one period that doesn't get the attention that it really does deserve!

Thank you so much! I agree, the frontier is so apropos to steampunk's spirit of adventure but it's not very commonly seen here on the East Coast - maybe because it's not perceived as glamourous or sexy? The fashion trends of Europe and the East Coast were slow to arrive to the frontier, and usually inaccessible to anyone on a ranch, farm, or homestead. But there's plenty of room for interpretation - Annie Oakley wore a corset and sewed her own costumes, though she was notoriously modest in her attire, but there were also soiled doves and saloon girls - I went for more of a 'lady wrangler' look but Old West steampunk could be tweaked to be as sexy as any European-style fashion.

Oh, I am soooo with you on that one! Inhabiting the Great Southern Land, we have the same sort of thing..."high fashion" was just out of reach of most people...though for the life of me, I can't find anything on what the "ladies" wore in the drinking establishments of the gold fields. We didn't have the wild west like you did, not that I let that stop me! hehehe. Full Steam ahead and don't spare the Punk!!!! Ah, I think I have a new motto...

I am such corny patriot, I love to see people wearing fashion that's unique to the States. Yay for more Western steampunk! You must of course post pics.

Beautiful outfit. I love the cuffs and I'm glad to see the collar in action.

I totally didn't see you there, I am very sorry that I am a jerk and didn't say hello! I love your ensemble, I think the accessories (especially the belt) really make it.

Thanks! I like it, too :) I think you did say hello - that is, if you are the gent on the far right of this photo. I shook your hand! If that's not you, sorry for misidentifying you in my post. Not to worry, I was only there for the second part of the fashion show - I doubt I was even there for an hour. It was just too crowded for a cripple.

Nope, that wasn't me, I'm in that picture though, in the sleevless tuxedo jacket with gauntlets. :-D I was there crazy early in the day and left before the fashion show started.

That is so strange, I shook hands with a guy who looks a lot like you, who said he remembered me from the Telectroscope waving party, but it wasn't isee4dimensions or squirrelmadness, and you three were the only three men there - maybe that guy meant he remembers me from the photos of the Telectroscope, in which case he was probably wondering why I was greeting him. Oh well! Hope to see you again at some future event.

Oh, that's hilarious! I think I've referred to Dave as thatjazz in my LJ posts about the Telectroscope. Of course I remember you - the seamstress/designer. Sorry for the mix-up!
