Clockwork Ink!

  • Jul. 11th, 2009 at 12:08 AM
Body Art is fashion, isn't it?

I may just still be endorphin high, but I'm loving my new tattoo!

Love the original design (my concept sketches realized and freshly inked by Greg Ross of Blue Rose Tattoo, Huntsville, AL); a fanciful Victorianesque design of clockwork gears with an ornate windup-key. Love the colors too.

fyi: the number "46" on the key refers to the number of miles I finished in a 12 hour ultramarathon race back in March. (ie--wind me up, and I'll keep going!)

So, who else has steampunk ink?

Steam Up the Legs

  • Jul. 10th, 2009 at 7:21 PM
Following a link from an ad, I discovered that Plasticland has these adorable spat-inspired legwarmers.  I'm planning on knitting or crocheting my own, but at 19 bucks, these babies wouldn't set me back too much.  There's also a snazzier black and white pair available, but they look more like socks.  They've also got some interesting retro-inspired skirts and blazers that would probably fit everyday/office wear standards and still be steamy.

In honor of Nikola Tesla's birthday, the Alternia Comics site is launching today!

Stories in five worlds update as follows:

Tuesdays: Crossworld - Steampunk? Historical fantasy? Modern magic? You name it!
Wednesdays: Ex Machina - Corporate cyberpunk future
Thursdays: Mystic Frontiers - Classic fantasy

Each world will alternate updates between long term serial stories and one shot short stories. World-building articles and artwork will be posted on weekends and at random.

The purpose of Alternia is to entertain and inspire. We welcome you to submit your own stories and ideas for inclusion on the site - in the absence of canon, make it up!

Happy Birthday Nikola Tesla, in audio form

  • Jul. 10th, 2009 at 10:29 AM
Google has a brilliant salute to Nikola Tesla as their default image today, if you haven't seen it already. If you're looking for a way to celebrate Nikola Tesla's birthday my sister and I of the Clockwork Cabaret put together a show last year with songs all about electricity, inventions, Edison and of course Tesla himself. There are a surprising number of songs that mention Tesla! Available for listening or download here, episode number 24 entitled "Happy Birthday, Nikola Tesla!"

So this isn't just a big chunk of words, below is an image Lady A of StrangeFiction.net drew for my birthday. Ladies, avert your eyes if a cartooned shirtless Nikola Tesla might offend your delicate sensibilities!

I just had to share this with you ladies and gents... Okay, so it's not fashiony, but it's rather steam-ish, and I thought it might bring smiles to faces. :)

I've been busy with building inventory for conventions, renfests, etc., and haven't had much chance to post of late. But here's a coupla new items I'm introducing on my table this weekend at Polaris in Toronto.

I'm not a massive fan of steampunk bracers per se, but the market demands it...

Clockwork key jewelry

  • Jul. 9th, 2009 at 1:22 PM
Hello all! I'm a longtime lurker who has very much enjoyed seeing all the wonderful costumes and accessories people have posted in this community. Since last fall, my wire wrapped jewelry has tended heavily towards antique keys and watch bits, which I hope might be of interest to people here. I keep a gallery of photographs of everything I've made at my website, silverowlcreations.com, but there are details of many of my currently available items in my Etsy shop:

Thank you!

Steamy Idea Help

  • Jul. 9th, 2009 at 9:05 AM
While looking for a pattern to make a friend a winter coat I stumbled upon this pattern.

I'm looking to make the lady's coat to add to my winter wardrobe. This would be a coat I would wear daily so I'm trying to figure out how to make this into an everyday sort of coat. Mostly what I'm looking for are color ideas. I tend to be a "stick to black" sort of person and I want to get out of that with this. If you were making this what base color and what contrast color would you make it in?

Something I was thinking about late last night... Is anyone going to their local midnight showing of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince dressed in their steamy finest?

I mean, though Harry Potter is definitely modern, there are elements of the Hogwarts universe that are steamy. Take, for example, Mad Eye's attire. Or much of the formal attire of the professors.

As for myself, I'll be dressing up. Since my steampunk outfit straddles a Hogwarts professor's clothing, I'll technically be going as an Original Character from the universe, but I'll be steaming it up, too.

By the way, if anyone's up to meeting up for the showing, I'll be going to the one at the Marcus Fox in Elgin, IL.

I've just made an 1880's polonaise gown and now would like to tackle a hat. Any suggestions? Pattern suggestions would be great too.

First Project

  • Jul. 9th, 2009 at 2:32 AM
Hey guys!
I just joined up and figured I'd say hello by posting my first project ever.  I made it for a friend's birthday who is into both Cyberpunk and Steampunk.

I made it out of an old TV remote, old clock, and computer bits and pieces.

*WARNING photos are very very large...I like them that way.  If you have slow internet, my take a moment to load*
