Boots for the Ladies

Attention, Kentuckians of the Female Persuasion!

If you've been looking for a high-quality, steampunk-ish boot that you can wear everyday, I found a great deal on Ariat's Women's Spat II at Off Broadway Shoes in the Hamburg Pavilion in Lexington. OBS is asking $99. Black and brown are available in many sizes as of my visit today.

This isn't the best picture of my costume, but I didn't have anyone around to help take pictures. However, I am really excited about it so I wanted to share it with you. Should have better pictures when I come back from ACen. :3

Somewhat older outfits

From January or February. I haven't really done much steampunk stuff lately, as I tend to dabble in many different styles. My steampunk alter-ego character, Clementine, has been put on hold. But oh I've missed her.

On to the pictures! )

Ladies and gentlemen, I shall be resuming my regular explorations into the theory that "In Steampunk, History is Stranger than Fiction" presently (likely in a weekly format); however, to tide you all over, here are some pictures of the 1851 Great Exhibition, the first of the beloved World's Fairs. The glass building you see featured prominently from within and without is the Crystal Palace, an incredible feat of engineering in its time. I hope you enjoy.

Yours, etc.,

This post is not because you all have been misbehaving; quite the contrary, you've all been comporting yourselves with the grace and dignity one would expect from such lovely, intelligent, creative, and generally fantastic people. Our internet is not that serious of a business, and we seem to keep it well in hand.

Now, we've been seeing a lot of mainstream coverage of steamy fashion in not only the printed press, but invariably in the internet as well. Some of this coverage is flattering and wonderful, and then some of it is churlish, rude, and poorly thought out. Please remember that while we are not inclined toward victimhood, we are even less inclined toward needless bickering.

A troll is somebody who enters a discussion in order to purposefully throw metaphorical hand grenades into the discourse. Some people are very good trolls; I believe the New York Times recently hired one for their op ed section in order to boost readership.  Accomplished trolls appear to have a fine grasp of the situation at hand, but espouse the most obnoxious and confrontational views possible.  Amateur trolls just resort to name-calling, straw-man attacks, and generally suck. These people thrive on discord and hurt feelings, and far be it from me to judge them for that; however, I believe that they can go feed somewhere other than here.

So, if somebody comes into the community and starts repeatedly posting in a needlessly critical way, do not respond in kind to them.  Please let the mods know they're here, and provide links to their repeated infractions. The most important thing is, however:

Do NOT feed the trolls.

This goes for all of you.

Here's an example of criticism that isn't trolling:
"That skirt is not flattering on you."
"I disagree with your ideas!"

Here's some trolling:
"You look retarded."
"You obviously have no idea what you're talking about."

It's important to recognize the difference here - this post is not an excuse for you to start freaking out every time someone has a criticism of your creation.  However, to be on the safe side, if you have criticism for somebody, first think: how would a polite lady of stature in the 1890s phrase this to her hostess, so as to inform but not to offend?  Don't be afraid to voice your opinion, just don't be a jerk about it.

To avoid needless skirmishes in our transition from a small, close-knit community into an actual subcultural fashion trend, let's all do our part to respond pro-actively to these attacks, rather than re-act the negativity.  Capishe?

Personally, I'd rather you all take
debate classes so you can recognize logical fallacies and defeat them with calm, well-thought out, and reasonable replies, but for the moment, just refusing to engage them on their level and informing a moderator (who will take care of them with great prejudice) will do.

Thank you.

Colored tights and gloves!

I just found this site:

welovecolors.

They have 45 colors (!!!) in pretty much everything they make. And everything they make includes:
solid tights and socks - men, women, women's plus size, and kids
stripe tights (black-and-x AND white-and-x versions) - women, women's plus size, and kids
vertical stripe thigh highs (black-and-x only) - women
silk ties - men, but don't let that stop you, ladies - for $18!!
wrist length gloves - men, women, and kids - not as nicely fitted as we might wish, but hey, they EXIST.
opera length gloves - men and women
elbow length gloves - men
stripe and fishnet armwarmers - women
shoelaces - hiding under women for some reason

And they ship internationally, too.

I can't vouch for their quality, as I haven't ordered from them at all, but they've apparently shown up in a bunch of fashion magazines, and actually bother mentioning both swim-fastness (!) and light-fastness, so they have to be at least as good as the Leg Avenue stuff. Having this available is super-sweet for pirates, dandies (Oscar Wilde was known for wearing colored gloves), knee-breeches outfits, lolita-steampunk or goth-steampunk outfits, ladies-of-the-evening/courtesans/libertines (think Moulin Rouge)...

Hello, this is my first post to the community, so I'll start off with saying that it's nice to see meet you all.

Well, if anyone is interested, I have some issues of ゴスロリ lying around, and its Japanese Gothic Lolita fashion.
However, some of the patterns can be made/are very steampunk.

The H.M.S. Chronabelle at the Maker Faire

Posted by [info]tessallations on Saturday, 10.May.2008 at 09:35
Hello my darlings of steamfashion,

The H.M.S. Chronabelle is back again with some more photographs to show you. We attended the Maker Faire in San Mateo last weekend, and what an incredible weekend it was. I'm not sure if I was more blown away by Neverwas Haul (a three floor Victorian mansion on wheels) or the Abney Park concert that happened on Saturday evening. Either way, here are some photos of the event for you to enjoy. Remember, there are a bunch more back at our DeviantArt. http://hmschronabelle.deviantart.com/

Potentially squeal-worthy item on eBay: An incomplete folk art automaton, just waiting for some love and someone to finish rebuilding him.  Great opportunity for someone mechanically inclined who has $900 kicking around. (ACK!)  I have nothing to do with this, but saw it on a blog I follow and thought of you.  :)

Just came back from an awesome evening at the Dryden Theater (located at the George Eastman House and supplied with movies by their movie-restoration school.)  Houdini footage, including his first filmed escape. Early radiology footage.  Felix the Cat.  A 'scary movie' from 1907 with effects that had to make some early cinema-goers heads explode. Instructional films on growing mushrooms.  A movie that I suspect was made while consuming said mushrooms. And, to accompany it all, awesome, awesome music from Dreamland Faces.  They really made the evening special, putting terrific tunes to a really diverse selection of very old, lovingly restored films.

Just had to plug Dreamland Faces.  I can't say enough good about them.  They really made my night, and if you get a chance to see them play, DO IT!

I'm just kicking myself because I thought I was sitting behind someone from this community and was too much of a dork to say hi.

I have declared Thursdays steampunk dress up days since February. I wear it to work, on the bus, to roller derby practice and Retro skate night. I have been very surprised how nice people have been and the complements I have gotten. Some thing about a lady dressed up seems to bring out the hidden politeness in people.
