| Description: | Get those creative juices flowing! A prompt is posted every Monday. |
Welcome to Stay In The Room!
What is Stay In The Room?
A way to get your creative juices flowing. A general prompt is posted every Monday, and a character-driven prompt is posted every Friday. You can use that prompt in any way you like: a short story, a poem, an essay, a piece of artwork, an epic three-book novel, and so on. We do ask that your piece is original and not fanwork.
Is there a time/word limit?
Nope! There are, however, optional limits, for those among us who like the added challenge. These challenges can be viewed here
How about a submission limit?
Yes and no -- we ask that you only post once a day, but that post can contain as many submissions as you like.
Should I comment?
Yes please! Everyone wants comments, even if it's just "I like this!" or "I don't like this!" At least then we know someone took the time to read.
Is there a header I should use?
You don't have to, but if you would like, just copy this and enter in the necessary information.

Speaking of, what sort of rating is allowed?
Any and all. However, please lj-cut anything equivalent to NC-17 and mark it as such. Failure to do so will, unfortunately, result in the deletion of your post.
Can I lock my entries?
Sure, use whichever security level you're comfortable with. All prompts and mod postings will be public.
Do you screen for quality?
No. Quality is in the eye of the yadda yadda, and frankly the moderator doesn't have time for that. However, do be aware that only outright flames are moderated; ergo, if you post crap, expect crap in return. At best no one will bother to read it.
What's with the name?
The creation of this community was inspired by The Pocket Muse by Monica Wood. Within the book is this paragraph:
So there you are.

The creation of this community was inspired by The Pocket Muse by Monica Wood. Within the book is this paragraph:
I once heard a college student in Waterville, Maine, ask visiting writer Ron Carlson how one knows if one is really a writer. Ever the showman, Carlson delivered an entertaining riff about the distractions writers put in their own way, all day, all the time: leaving the room to get coffee, check the mail, get coffee, walk the dogs, go to the bathroom, get coffee, look something up, get coffee. Then, dead serious, he summed up the whole enterprise in a line I have never forgotten: "The writer is the one who stays in the room."
So there you are.
