I absolutely adore Lu Ding Ji! Wei Xiao Bao and  Kang Xi are sooooooo cute!!!!!! i really like the friendship between them!
But I like the girlfriends of Xiao Bao. I mande a top 7 chart for them.

1. Shuanger
Honestly, I think Shuanger is the only one in love with Xiao Bao. She is so loyal to him.  She is xtremely smart. I mean, she tackled the whole map herself!!! I don't think Xiao Bao will success without Shuanger!!! also Shuager is very kind 2 others, and she never forgets
Zhuang Jia. Also she has quite good martial arts too.

2. Su  Quan
Su Quan is....WOW!!!! At first she looked very evil. But she is SO CLEVER. And her martial arts is SO GOOD! I mean she can let Feng Fan Shi feel surprised! Before she was full of evil ideas, but after she had Xiao Bao's baby, she was very loyal to him too. And she always helped him in sticky situations.

3. Zeng Rou
She is very gentle, like her name. She is also good to Xiao Bao and doesn't argue much. I like the part when she secretly kept Xiao Bao's dices.

4. Mu Jianping
Only one word 4 her, NAIVE. She was quite stupid. But she was nice to Xaio Bao. And calls him hao ge ge.

5. Jian Ning Gong Zhu & Fang Yi
Jian Ning is just ......horrible. How could a princess like that exist!!!!!! She nedds to go to a mental hospital.
Fang Yi is always cheat Xiao Bao,  but she did kept her promise in the end.

6. Su Fei Ya Gong Zhu
Jian Ning and SFY must have the same ancestors. They are both nuts!!!

7. A Ke
I hate A Ke most. She may have a poor life but she was ungrateful that Xiao Bao saved her from the slut Zheng Keshuang. She always missed him. she is such a disgusting woman.

I posted very brief opinions on various adaptations of Legend of the Condor Heroes as the first entry in this community. Now I'd like to elaborate more on those, and so, here are my personal thoughts on the four versions I've watched.

TVB 1982 )

TVB 1994 )

CCTV 2003 )

Chinese Entertainment Shanghai 2008 )

As I said, personal thoughts. Feel free to comment, refute, discuss, etc.

Reading versus Watching Wuxia.

First, you have the problem of genre. The genre Jin Yong writes in is called "wuxia" in Chinese, which literally translated means something like "martial arts chivalric heroes."

As the article also states, the genre is more familiar to non-Chinese audience than before. Maybe it's just a plain business decision, i.e. investing too much in a genre that's just newly emerging might be risky?

Another problem with Chinese wuxia novels for westerners is that the style of writing is very non-western.

I do sometimes find the writing style to be overly melodramatic. This can be appropriated in translation, however. Graham Earnshaw has done a good job (IMO) with Shujian Enchou Lu, aka The Book and the Sword.

seeing [info]wuxiadaddy's post made me realize that i've been watching this community for so long, that i should probably actually join.  so here i am.  i recently re-discovered wuxia during a trip to hong kong last year & since then have been reading as much as i could get my hands on in english translation.  i haven't really read all that much aside from jin yong & gu long, which i thoroughly enjoy, so if anyone has any recommendations, send them my way!  i also have to recommend the smiling proud wanderer translation from spcnet & they are also apparently, working on legend of the condor heroes as well. :D

Hi, I'm new to the community and wanted to say hello. I also wanted to pass on some news y'all probably already know but, if not... the translation of Smiling Proud Wanderer (or State of Divinity) has just been completed over on the SPCNET forums. Take a look and enjoy. I'm looking forward to being a member of the community.

Can anyone point me towards a legitimate outlet for importing Chinese dvds with English subtitles? Previously, I've purchased movies through EdayMovie.com or YesAsia.com, but I'm concerned that a significant portion of what I'm getting consists of bootleg dvds, something I'm trying very deliberately to avoid these days since reading about who actually manufactures and profits from them. However, there are lots of movies I've gotten to see at festivals that don't seem to be getting U.S. dvd releases anytime soon (The Banquet and A Battle of Wits are two that Lesley and I both enjoyed a lot), and I'm getting impatient.

Any insight would be appreciated. Should I just look on the same sorts of sites, but only purchase Region 3 movies? Are all region-free dvds bootlegs? It doesn't seem to be the case, as I find it weird to think that some of these elaborate "collectors' editions" are bootlegs, but they are region-free. Are there sites that are guaranteed to only sell legitimate dvds, regardless of region coding?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in beta reading and/or a beta reader in return?

Description:

Kung fu fantasy (wuxia) Eurasian-influenced work. Details the lives and deaths of several individuals impacting the rise and fall of empires, the latter of which takes place only in the background while the lives of the people stand forefront. Basically a huge soap opera love-story, hence the ending line. Extremely concerned with style and content. The Western threat is constantly hinted at but does not actually make an appearance until the end. Hopefully "pretty, witty and gay."

Sincerely,
Winnie

Mystery of the Condor Hero is an old TVB series from 1993. It was the first wuxia drama that I watched and what made me fall in love with the genre and Jin Yong's stories in the first place. I recently bought a copy of this and got the chance to watch this series again. It's on of TVB's spin-offs or a side stories to Legend of the Condor Heroes, with Huang Yaoshi / Wong Yerk Si as the main character. It takes place around the same time as the start of LOCH and aside from Wong Yerk Si meeting his wife, the story is also about the five greats fighting for 9 Yin Zhen Jing / 9 Yan Jan Ging. I wrote down my thoughts on it in a review and posted it in my lj.

I've been watching this community for a while, but this is my first time posting. So... hi.

I'm going to be placing an order from http://store.edaymovie.com/ soon, and I'm looking for recommendations on good wuxia movies, particularly recent movies that don't have a U.S. release yet. On my list so far are Shadowless Sword and Dragon Tiger Gate. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
