Why This Must Be Read:

This was written for lgbtfest, possibly my favourite challenge in fandom, and takes off from the end of Company of Thieves, in which Colonel Emerson goes down with his ship. Cam, being a close friend of Emerson’s, goes along to the wake, and ends up taking Daniel with him. All of which is made more awkward by Emerson’s family not being really able to deal all that well with Emerson being gay, and Cam effectively coming out to Daniel in the process.

I love this story for how real it is – no-one’s an evil person, even if they sometimes do things that hurt others, and no-one’s perfect either, even if they’re trying to do the right thing. Everyone in the story is grieving and hurting, and there’s no way to do what will make everyone feel okay about things, and tesserae_ makes it work so well. Especially through Cam’s eyes; she writes his tangled up worry about Emerson, and Emerson’s partner, and his own sexuality and potential future so well that by the end of the story, you feel like *you* need a hug as much as Cam does.

Why this must be read:

I sit at the feet of Princess of Geeks when it comes to recs: her SG-1 Rec List Of Doom was in an open tab on my laptop for months, and was responsible – directly, or in a six-degrees-of-separation way – for much of the fic I read when I first got into this fandom, but then I also learned what an incredible author she is. This one is a tag to S3 “The Devil You Know”, with Daniel taking care of an injured Jack. It's a quiet, non-plotty fic, with just Jack and Daniel on stage for most of it, and it captures beautifully the "what now?" of after the big escape.  There is some Daniel angst there, but it’s possibly one of the least angsty h/c fics from Jack’s POV I’ve ever read, and, as written here, it makes sense. Granted, Jack is drugged up to the eyeballs and bone tired, but that’s not (just) what is making him relax. This Jack is one that I recognise well, the one who has seen unimaginable horrors and endured – and committed – dreadful things, but who derives real value and comfort from ordinary, non-heroic pleasures.

Why This Must Be Read:

This was written for me for 2007’s sg_rarepairings exchange and I will happily confess to be gleeful and smug when I received it, because someone wrote this awesome fic just for me. And now I get to be gleeful and smug all over again while I rec it. Win-win.

Inflorescence starts with Teyla and her parents attending a naming ceremony on the Genii homeworld, where a very young Teyla suggests Sora as a name for a beautiful baby (did I mention I love stories about other world cultures? Teyla fic tends to have a lot of these). The rest of the story skips through the two of them growing up, until Sora’s coming of age ceremony at the end, full of bits and pieces of their culture, and of Sora and Teyla’s growing relationship.

What I really love about this is the little hints latentfunction weaves in about the Genii as we’ll see them in the show, and the effects of this on Sora, and then the effects of that on Teyla, and on their friendship, the way that Teyla seems to come so close to figuring it out, and then not. Also, she writes a really beautiful Teyla, so caring and compassionate, and a really clear picture of her growing up, even though we only see bits of it.

Happy birthday, Daniel!

This AU has Rodney as a brusque, yet brilliant artist looking for the perfect model for a concept he's working on. John fills that slot and then adds more than posing to Rodney's artistic process. The Rodney and John characterizations are sharp-edged and believable, with Rodney's obsession with artistic integrity leading him to make his own paper and paints and John's vulnerability hidden beneath a mask of casual indifference, both isolated until they cross over into each other's empty spaces.

The descriptions of Rodney's work are fascinating with wonderful sensory details, as are the observations of the model he's immortalizing. A lovely set of stories to read and finish with a smile.

Why This Must Be Read: Paian and Princess of G and Sid did a stunning collaboration here, as Teal'c weighs his experiences with the Tau'ri and considers the meaning of ritual, friendship, and the depths that can often be found in simplicity.

There is magnificent Teal'c POV, written with gravity and choice turns of phrase. Teal'c looks back at his habits over the years and his connections with Jack, at the weight of their burdens and challenges and the choices they make for the sake of others. It's all wrapped up in Jack's fondness for cliches and the benefits of long, hot showers; but there are layers and layers here, waiting to be read with careful thought and even deeper appreciation.

This is the Teal'c I love, and the Jack he respects: the warrior friendship bond at its absolute best.

Why This Must Be Read:

Deep Water is an au that kicks off with the few weeks before Rising – Cam wasn’t injured in the fight over Antarctica, but instead gets offered whatever posting he wants as reward for his heroism, and chooses the Atlantis mission, whereupon he meets Sheppard in Antarctica (Dr Sheppard, that is, mathematician) and it all goes from there.

This is a fantastic au, with a few small changes having major ripples across Atlantis. Cam is perfectly himself in Atlantis, as the military commander struggling with the city and the scientists and how he feels about John. Add in all the unresolved issues he has from what happened during the Antarctic battle, and this could have been how the show went instead (and should have been, in my opinion). Atlantis through Cam’s eyes in wonderful, and kyizi does a great job with his dry sense of humour, and his concern and compassion.

Why This Must Be Read:

Written for the team_sga au fest a couple of months back, this is fantastic team-centric gen. Except the team are teenagers growing up in Pegasus – Teyla as a young Athosian, and Rodney, John and Ronon as fosterlings sent from their worlds to spend their adolescence on Athos with Teyla’s family as ‘brothers she doesn’t want.’

Friendshipper captures all four team members brilliantly – they’re so like themselves despite the age gap and the change in setting – as well as writing them as really believable teenagers who’ve been sent somewhere they don’t want to be. I’m a huge fan of Pegasus-au’s anyway, and this one has so many really cool ideas about Athos and Pegasus and how the galaxy works without the expedition or the immediate threat of the Wraith, all seen through Teyla’s eyes as a young woman who is so clearly going to grow into the Teyla we see on screen.

Why This Must Be Read:
Summary: Things go belly up (because they always go belly up) on a rescue mission to save an SGA team stuck deep underground and running out of air. (~27,740 words)

I was squeeing when I saw this posted, because, well, action-adventure teamfic-plus-Keller is one of my favorites. And I wasn't disappointed... this story put me in a great mood.:) Tipper writes one of the best Keller voices around and she gets to play a prominent part in this fic, so I'm snagging it for the character category.

This was written for sga_genficathon for the prompt The journey of a thousand miles sometimes ends very, very badly, and it's a great, creatively literal take on the prompt. The setting feels genuinely alien and very scary; there's a constant sense of danger that makes for a gripping read. I love the characterization; particularly Teyla and Jennifer get to shine (but the guys get plenty of airtime, too). The dialogue could come right out of the show, it's spot on.

Their relationship threads throughout the stories building slowly to a sweet ending.

A quick note, don't go searching for Part I - the author notes that would be the unwritten story of when the Ancients lived in the city.

Why This Must Be Read:

Although this is a work in progress, it is already well over 110,000 words and it is absolutely marvelous.  It would never have occurred to me to make Rodney McKay Rory Gilmore's real father, but it works very, very well. The story is set post-series for both Gilmore Girls and SG-1, and during Atlantis season 4. When Chris is diagnosed with leukemia, he needs a bone marrow transplant and Rory is tested for compatibility. Both are surprised when it turns out that not only is Rory not a compatible donor, it is not possible that Chris is her biological father. When Rory learns that Rodney McKay could be her biological father, she starts researching his work, which attracts the attention of the SGC.

Author's Summary: Rory Gilmore always thought she was Christopher Hayden's daughter, but things are a little more complicated than that...

Not nearly enough do we see Janet take a lead role in a story. She's frequently mentioned and usually has great infirmary scenes, but as member of the SGC staff and not a member of SG-1, finding amazing Janet stories can be a task. So when Janet Alphabet Soup went live on May 19th, we got not one or two, but 27 mindblowingly awesome fics. The second half of her "Menace Duology", the story stands on its own as a fabulous episode tag to Season 5's "Menace." What makes it unique is that it is told from Janet's point of view. We have the chance to see here that when the awesomeness of SG-1 breaks down, there are people to help put them back together again. Here, Janet is the great mediator-the one who wasn't involved with the group dynamic and politics of SG-1 and can be the person to whom people seek a dry shoulder when the going goes right past tough to downright miserable.
