Based on the Neil Gaiman novel Stardust (which was itself based on a graphic novel Gaiman had written earlier with artist Charles Vess), the movie tells the story of Tristan Thorn (Charlie Cox), who promises the prettiest girl in his town that in exchange for her hand in marriage he'll retrieve the fallen star that fell to earth on the forbidden other side of the wall that separates their hometown from the realm of Faerie. To Tristan's surprise, the star isn't just a hunk of rock and metal but is a young woman named Yvaine (Claire Danes) with a mind and a will of her own. First by force and later by persuasion, Tristan convinces Yvaine to follow him home. Along the way they meet danger and excitement in the form of a dying king's fatally ambitious sons, witches, pirates, and their growing mutual attachement.
