It had taken some effort convincing Sakura that she was going to the Masquerade. She wasn't, and had no intention of going, but her best friend wouldn't leave her alone if she knew that. As it was, Ino didn't think she had been entirely convinced - after all, Sakura had probably seen her turn down Yumichika's offer of joining his entourage, and Sakura knew how well she and Yumi got along.

Still, going all out with her costume seemed to have at least placated Sakura, if only because Ino was a perfectionist and spent forever getting ready - after all, if she was going to be a genie, even just to stay in, then she might as well be a beautiful one.  She'd also complied with Sakura's request that she cross her arms, nod and blink, so that Sakura would be happy enough with Ino not to insist on dragging her to the Masquerade herself. Apparently the sight of a nodding, blinking genie - why on Earth would they even do that? - was really funny. Ino figured it was probably some weird muggle thing, because when she left Sakura had been humming some jaunty tune that was now stuck in the blonde's head.

With a sigh, she looked down and tugged at the purple material of her pants. At least now she could show the costume to Karin.

Karin stared at the door to the Ravenclaw Common Room, which refused to budge. “I don’t get it,” she said flatly. “Why would I bother solving some stupid riddle to cross a bridge when I could just grab a broom and fly over?”



The door didn’t reply, but then again, doors seldom did. Karin flumped against the wall. Well this was a fabulous idea.

Ino glanced at the clock. Karin had said she'd be on her way a while ago, so unless she got distracted along the way she should be here by now.

...And is probably stuck outside. Ino rolled her eyes at herself and rose from the sofa, moving to the Common Room entrance and pulling the door open. Sure enough, there was Karin, looking extremely annoyed.

Ino leaned against the door frame. "Hey."

Karin had opened her mouth to chew Ino out about her stupid freaking door when she actually caught sight of the girl.

She paused, and then shut her mouth with a click, a small smirk playing about her lips. “I thought you weren’t going to the masquerade,” she said, innocently enough as she sauntered into the Common Room to take a hold of Ino’s waist. She leaned up and dropped a kiss on the blonde’s lips. “Hi.”

The blonde smiled against Karin's lips. "I'm not, she replied, taking Karin's hand and leading her further into the Common Room and letting the door shut behind her. "Actually I had just to convince everyone else I was going so they'd go away."

Arriving at the sofa in front of the fireplace, she slid onto it and looked back at Karin with a teasing smile. "Good look?"

“You lied?” Karin allowed herself to be lead, dumping herself onto the couch next to Ino and bouncing slightly. “For me? I’m honoured.”

Funny thing was, she was actually telling the truth.

“And it’s a great look.”

"I'd much rather spend time with you," Ino replied lightly. Lightly, although it was the truth. The smile became a flirtatious grin. "I guess I'll need to save it for another occasion, then?"

The grin sobered a little, and her hand inched a little closer to Karin's, sliding her fingers over the other girl's and just letting them sit there for a second.

Karin blinked, staring down at the soft fingers covering hers. "Well, I suppose I am fabulous," she said out loud.

For some reason, that single touch was way too confusing.

Glancing over, Ino carefully observed Karin's reaction. The redhead hadn't pulled away, or made any move at all, and Ino wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad one. Still, all things considered, this was Karin. If Karin thought something was stupid, she would say so.

She carefully slipped her fingers through Karin's, twining them and squeezing gently. All the while she looked at Karin and absently wondered why, considering what had happened the night before last, this single gesture was making adrenaline push through her veins.

"That you are," she breathed. "Not as fabulous as me, but pretty fabulous nonetheless."

Karin abruptly realised that she’d never been in a situation like this before. As such, she didn’t know quite what to do with herself.

She could squeeze Ino’s hand back, but that could be too clingy. She could not squeeze it, and run the risk of another misunderstanding.


The hardest thing to admit, it seemed, was that she actually cared what Ino thought about her.

Weird.

Ino just waited. Karin wasn't freaking out or making a scene, and that was a good sign, and while the blonde was maybe a little disappointed that the other girl hadn't made any gesture in return, the fact remained that she was Karin. Karin didn't do... relationshippy.
Not that this was a relationship, she reminded herself.

Smiling, she leaned her shoulder against Karin's. "So, how've you been, anyway?"

Some part of her tugged, wanting to apologise for the misunderstanding of the day before, but somehow she thought bringing it up might ruin the... whatever this was.

"How have been?" Karin echoed, leaning closer to the other girl without realising it. "Oh, fabulous. My girlfriend thought that I want nothing to do with her and ran away the morning after we has sex. You know, the usual."

The blonde nodded, her lips curling into a more teasing smile. "We did. You're the one who said it." She poked Karin's collarbone gently and leaning forward, lightly pressed her lips to the corner of Karin's mouth.
"It really doesn't matter though, does it?"

Wait, what?

Ino wasn't meant to agree with her. She was meant - to protest and be clingy and react like that bay and shit, Karin was falling into the same needy cycle all over again.

She pulled away sharply. "I wasn't going to the Masquerade anyway," she mumbled.

Ino tilted her head to the side. Was Karin... something was up with her. Her mouth tugged into a slight frown, but she quickly corrected the expression into a smile. Twisting, she laid back, letting the back of her head rest in Karin's lap.

"It would have been lame anyway," Ino agreed, wriggling to make herself comfortable.
"What's the point of covering up your sexiness with a mask?" Ino pouted and looked up at Karin's face. "It would have been terrible."
