Writer's Block: Live from New York

Saturday Night Live, hosted by George Carlin, aired live from New York for the first time in 1975. The cast of SNL has been through many changes in the show’s history, from Chevy Chase to Tina Fey. Who was the funniest?

    View other answers

There have been some awesome talents come out of SNL over the years, I have favorites from lots of casts. But the classic first season "Not Ready For Prime Time Players" lineup is the template.

Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Laraine Newman and Garrett Morris. Add Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin and Bill Murray to the mix, and you could NOT miss.

Jane Curtin and Dan Aykroyd doing "Point / Counterpoint" on Weekend Update... "Jane, you ignorant slut!" Too great.

Heaven in a cup of coffee...
There is, you know. Coffee in heaven, I mean. If there is actually a heaven, somewhere, somehow...  And there's a river of good coffee. But of course. I've always thought that heaven is just what you make of it. What you want, you need, you like, you expect... it'll be there. What makes you happy. But mostly what you expect. That'd be the same case with hell. If there actually is a hell. It'd be exactly as you picture it. Although, for some reason, I don't believe in the existence of hell – as a separate location of eternal fire and damnation, I mean, because there obviously is such a thing as Hell on Earth. Oh yes, there is –. Ahh... I've been questioning a lot of things lately. My religious upbringing and all that. I'm a recovering Catholic. Heh... never said better.

But wait. Where was I?  Oh yeah. Coffee. Good coffee, even. I have a new coffeemaker, yay!!!!  *does a little dance* The old one had been broken for months... and I'd been surviving on instant coffee. *hangs head in shame*  It's just that, well, it was a Black&Decker, paper filter, drip kind of coffeemaker. And those things go for like... $40?  Not that it's a lot of money or anything, but I just hadn't gotten around to buying a new one. Until the other day, when mom called and said (why in hell don't quotation marks work in here!?) – I'm in the store and there's this Black&Decker, paper filter, drip kind of coffemaker on sale for 21 bucks, and it has a clock and everything, you want it? – And I was like... HELL YES!  The old one didn't even have the fancy timer and clock thingie...  So she promptly went ahead and bought it... for $16. SIXTEEN BUCKS. (How was it that she got it for $5 less than the marked price, I have no clue, other than to say that woman has the magical touch for bargains!)

And now I'm enjoying a huge mug of coffee laced with cinnamon and I couldn't be happier. I'm a simple girl, with simple tastes. Doesn't take much to make me happy, I guess...

    Song interlude )

Speaking of coffee, I'm seriously considering buying the bookstore in Boquete. Going over there next weekend to scope the location out, ask questions, get a feel of the business... so I can make a decision. I'd probably do better getting into it on my own, but I'm a scaredy cat. :S  So I'm going with Joe & Carlos, who are also interested, maybe, probably...  and we will see. Maybe it's too small a business for three people. I don't know. But I was talking it over with Joe the other day. We have so many ideas for the bookstore. Plus it's easier to split the money needed to start up instead of shouldering the financial burden by myself. We still have no clue how we'll get the money, though... but it's not too incredibly much. I'm really excited about this. I've always wanted to have a bookstore/coffeeshop and live in Boquete. And even if this doesn't pan out, I can still move over there, maybe. I cannot stand living in this city anymore. I've been saying that for a long time, but I never do anything about it. And this bookstore thing is an excuse, really, it's just an excuse, to get me to actually seriously consider doing something about changing my current living situation. So it all works out, I think... Anything that gets me off my butt and moving and doing and changing things is good. I tend to fall into a rut. I hate it, but yet, I do it all the time. So I'm excited at the possibilities for change... :)

    Song interlude )

Ok, so whining does have its good side, I guess. I whine and whine and whine, and complain complain complain... and I think all that whining and all that complaining floats around in the ether and gets somewhere and gets something moving, you know, because things sometimes do get sorted all out by themselves – or by that some divine hand, perhaps, I'm not sure.(*)

    Song interlude )

Anyway, I'd been feeling the burden of working every evening on the TV newscast. It ended at 8pm, and then I had to write up the report, which some nights would take me about two hours to finish. So it was usually 10pm when I actually had time for myself. I even stopped watching TV altogether. Because even though some good shows do start at 10, I just lost interest. Plus I'm sooo behind on the other assignment, which is the Cuban radio newscast. I usually started on it at midnight or so, after the other one and after wasting time on the Web for a while. But since this assignment is not time-limited, as in I don't have to submit it right away, I've been letting the programs pile up. So right now I have 5 shows to work on. This week's shows. And I'd been stressing because of that.

    Song interlude )

But then, yesterday, the light at the end of the tunnel. :D  The guys at the Embassy wrote to ask me if I wanted to work on another product, the RPC radio newscast from 5pm - 6pm and drop the SERTV cast. And I said OMG YES!!! Well, I didn't exactly reply like that, but it's what I was thinking! I will probably be wrapping up the report at 8pm at the latest. So now I'll have my evenings free! Yay!  I still have to do the Cuban radio thing, though. But if I manage to get up to date with this week's summaries (and I need to do that by tomorrow, at the latest), then it'll only be the matter of working on the previous date's program the next morning. Or something like that.

    Song interlude )

Ok, this is too long, and I need to get to work.

    Song interlude )

Ohhh my. I do tend to ramble on and on, don't I?  Oh well... it's not like anyone reads this, anyway...

Greg, Scholke and I went to Cafe Zoma last night to see Andy Ewen and Ritt Deitz play. Greg told me that he'd seen them both a couple of times before, and that they were some of the best guitar players he'd ever seen. I thought I would give it a whirl. I was not crazy about Andy Ewen's musical/lyrical style, though it wasn't bad. I thoroughly enjoyed Ritt Deitz and his "quartet." It was such folksy, midwesterny, acousticky kind of music. Plus, Ritt has his two sons playing, as well as an older guy (who could pass for his father) and a younger guy (who could pass for his brother). This gave it a really dynamic, generational feel. I was particularly amazed by his sons who, though they looked to be 11 and 14 years old (and had the apathetic look of that age written all over their faces), played with such precision and passion. There was even an impressive array of instruments brought out, including a washboard, dulcimer, and accordion. I couldn't help but feel that I was witnessing something special when they were all on stage.

I do not feel much better health-wise. My throat hurts a bit more, I had a raging headache upon waking up, and I'm just completely exhausted. I'm thinking that I might like to curl up in my pajamas and watch Buffy all night long. I'm sure that'll be more than amenable to Greg.

Also, I got my Everyday Minerals sample (this is probably only interesting to Annalise, but whatever). I haven't gotten to try out all the foundation shades yet, but I think I hit the mark with where I should be color-wise. I'm a little bit disappointed with the blush color (Nick Nack)...it's very light pink. It's not bad, but I prefer something a little more intense. I think the concealer (Perk Me Up, I think it's called?) works very well for my under-eye circles. I'm not used to my skin looking so damn good! I'm way excited to play with more colors and shades in the future.

Greg and I are (hopefully) going apartment hunting in UC next weekend. That is, if we can successfully set up viewing appointments for places that will take leases starting in January. Also, it's a UIUC football game day, so we're going to have to stay in Bloomington. Cross your fingers so that we'll find a good apartment, please. :)

SO UH family friend's twenty-first birthday today. WELL tonight, I pretty much just got back from the party and I am so tired but I NEED TO LIST TWO THINGS that I need to remember.

    1. I ATE ICING NIPPLES*
    2. Taxi Man**

    * The cake was in the shape of a man's torso, a man-in-a-thong's torso. The birthday girl wanted the contents of said thong so I snagged myself a nipple. Tasted good.
** And on the way home, I had the window open for a bit of fresh air and a guy came up beside us as we were driving, leaned out of the taxi window and shouted "WHITE NOISE. TURN IT ON!!" He was pretter hammered.

McCain spent $273,000 on household staff last year alone

Sen. John McCain, the one trying to portray Barack Obama as an out-of-touch "elitist", spent $273,000 dollars on household servants and staff at his many homes and multi-million dollar condos in 2007 alone according to his tax returns.

Politico's analysis of the McCain records found that five of the eight properties were purchased between the summer of 2004 and this February, for a total of $11 million. And the analysis found that the McCains hired additional household help in 2007.

The five new properties are all condominiums, and they include three in Phoenix — one of which became the couple's primary Phoenix residence after a Cindy McCain family trust in 2006 sold for $3.2 million the house in which they raised their children — and a pair outside San Diego.

The new properties joined three previously owned by Cindy McCain, her dependent children and their trusts: a scenic ranch outside Sedona, Ariz., where John McCain has entertained staff, prospective running mates and political reporters; a three-bedroom Arlington, Va., condo that's been John McCain's Washington-area residence since 1993; a La Jolla, Calif. condo that is home to Cindy McCain's elderly aunt and on which the trust recently paid nearly $7,000 in back taxes.

The condo that serves as the McCain's primary Phoenix residence was purchased in 2006 for $4.7 million by Cindy McCain's trust. It is a 6,600-square foot unit.

Less than one year after the McCains acquired it, a corporation controlled by Cindy McCain bought another condo on a lower floor in the same building for $830,000.

And, in between, the corporation plunked down $700,000 for a 1,900-square-foot, three-bedroom loft condo for their then-22-year-old daughter, Meghan, who was moving back to Phoenix after graduating from New York's Columbia University. The unit is now listed for sale at $730,000.

Cindy McCain, through another family corporation, spent about $4.7 million in 2004 and 2008 on two condos in an exclusive building in Coronado, Calif., an affluent San Diego suburb noted for its high percentage of military retirees.

In an interview with Cindy McCain in the June issue of Vogue magazine, conducted from the newer Coronado condo, she explained that her husband, a Navy veteran, initially wasn't keen on the idea of a pied-à-terre in Coronado.

"When I bought the first one, my husband, who is not a beach person, said, 'Oh this is such a waste of money; the kids will never go,'" she said in Vogue. "Then it got to the point where they used it so much I couldn't get in the place. So I bought another one."

Why not? Got a stain on the carpet? Just buy another $5 million condo. Hell, according to McCain, if you make less than that a year, you're middle-class.

How many homes does he own? McCain, when asked, wasn't sure, saying that he'd have to check with his staff.

Do you know how many homes you own?

Did you make as much last year as the McCain's spent on household help alone?

And Obama is an "elitist" and not in touch with regular people?

Again, breathtaking hypocrisy. Lucky it's the other guy, the guy from a single parent home who made it by brains and hard work, that's the "elitist" in the race.

Any serious observer realizes that the McCain campaign has long since become an absolute joke as far as their wild claims and attacks.

The guy who correctly felt that the Iraq disaster would be ... well, a disaster, is the one with such poor judgement that he's not qualified to be president, while the guy who called for invading Iraq the day after 9-11, and who constantly predicted an easy victory, and who has been nearly psychopathic in his fixation on continuing the conflict into the next millenium, is the guy who has the judgement required.

The guy who got it right.... is wrong, and the guy who repeatedly and consistently got it wrong, and continues to insist we continue making the same mistakes, the guy who's flat wrong.... is right.

See? It all makes sense in a Karl Rove sort of way. Just don't pay attention to that nagging voice of reason in your head.

    BPAL Halloweenie squee-age.
Just placed an order @ BPAL for some of the Halloweenie goodness. Hadn't had a chance (or the money till now) to really look at it and enjoy all the descriptions and make my choices. Plus I haven't ordered anything in awhile so I felt it okay to splurge a bit this time. My haul:

    John Barleycorn
    Barley, beer, blood, and whiskey.

    To Autumn
Mist and mellow fruitfulness: mist-swirled, moss-covered bark and dry red leaves, apple pulp and knotty galangal, with poppy juice and nutmeat.

    Pumpkin Plunder
Freakin' had to just get the whole patch, looks yummy as usual! I usually only get imps of everything but this time... bottles baby. BOTTLES.

And the bonus imp of "Needle in a Haystack"
Hay absolute, sun-baked pumpkin rind, twisting vines, and the tiniest sparkle of gleaming metal.

And oh holy crap... SLEEPY HOLLOW SCENTS!!! Guh.

    Ichabod Crane
Dusty black wool, tea with cream, black pepper, muguet, and beeswax candle drippings.

The Witching Time of the Night
Moonflower, night-blooming cereus, white hellebore, English ivy, monkshood, angel's trumpet, oleander, and eastern hemlock.

Also ordered the "Gooey Pillowcase" room and linen spray. The foodie in me is rejoicing.
Lumps of pumpkin fudge, marshmallow glop, cookie crumbs, caramel smears, and bits of sticky fuzz.

It was so hard. SO hard not to buy so much more. I love you [info]kebechet and I love your Halloweenie scents. Have to pace myself though, for Chrismas / Yuletide scents will be upon us before too long!

How extremely cool is the Dia de los Muertos tee? OMG!!!! Next week I just might have to order one.
Eagerly awaiting to getting my hands on these!! Yay!!

I can't log on to the BPAL forum! I requested from the lost password page, even though I used the one I always did to see if that would work. I keep getting locked out even if I use correct usernames and passwords. ARGH!

Last night was another sleepless night. Then after spending a few hours in bed coughing and rolling around restlessly, I finally stopped and had my window of opportunity to sleep. Before I could get comfortable, somebody started hammering on something in the other room, and within a minute or two I was wide awake. I tried to get back to sleep, but between my really bad allergies and the sunlight pouring into the room, it just wasn't happening. We have a show tonight. I have to load up early because people are coming over for poker tonight, and I have to have the car loaded up and parked out by the road before people get here so I'm not stuck in and having to ask everybody to move their cars when it's time for me to go. I'm not particularly looking forward to today and tonight.

And you talk when you're drunk like you're writing it up for an article.
I started making a mix of the songs I was heavily over-invested in when I was seventeen, but it got far too perturbing so I gave up.

when i put myself in the picture of success.

Rilo Kiley // Pictures Of Success

    you talk when you're drunk
like you're standing in front of a microphone
    and each night it repeats
and you fall into me like a domino.

Bright Eyes // I'll Be Your Friend

The first two are songs that you hear for the first time and think, "YES. Fucking bold underline capslock YES." And okay, as I listen right now I'm still thinking it. "I'll Be Your Friend" isn't connected to the other two but I love how shambolic the whole song is - both the "relationship" laid out in the lyrics and the gritty low-fi sound and jam session feel (with impromptu saxophone!).

I like posting songs in threes. I need a clever tag for it.
