JO IS LAUGHING AT US.
I've been following the discussion regarding the scanned epilogue controversey. But I have to wonder--is JKR pulling a fast one on us? This is the last time she'll be able to manipulate her fans and have them running on something that may be completely false. This is the last time she'll be able to surprise her fans with something this huge.

I mean, guys: it's the last effing Harry Potter book.

We haven't heard a word from JKR or the publishing company about this epilogue's validity. So maybe JKR is sitting back and contentedly watching us pull our hair over this vapid and insipid ending to our beloved series. Isn't this thus diverting us from knowing the truth? It's like someone's putting on a fireworks display in front of a museum while the robber sneaks in through the back door--we aren't paying attention to what's really going on.

If someone really had the book--think hard, my friends--why would they only divulge this part of the book? Why isn't more of it posted? Why isn't there something hardy, like "SNAPE KILLED DUMBLEDORE" in HBP? The "spoiler" isn't stupid enough just to give us the epilogue, where nothing really happens and no HUGE SECRETS are revealed. And by huge secrets, I mean VOLDEMORT. Come on! That's what the books are about--good vs. evil! If the spoiler really wanted to spoil us, they'd give us something substantial.

So. JKR, are you back there in England giggling over our dismay?

Of course, this is what I hope with all my heart. That ending is bullocks.

There is a huge difference between an epilogue and the ending of the book.

The epilogue in this case is what happened after the story told in DH to some of the characters.

The ending...the final confrontation...is a different chapter.

I know...I wasn't questioning what an epilogue was. I was saying that it's a pretty ridiculous thing to leave us with if the person who posted this has the whole book.

Sorry it's real and OBHWTF totally happens. I think I'm one of the few people who really likes the epilogue.
Harry's greatest desire has always been to have a family, and I know I'm a huge sap, but I think it's great that he can have that.

It's got to be fake. I think they were just deleted because, as you said, this is the LAST book. They're probably deleting everything just to keep us guessing. They wouldn't delete ONLY the one true spoiler on the internet, knowing that millions of us have already seen it. I dunno, I can't even think clearly right now.

I've been here: http://talk.portkey.org/index.php?showtopic=24495 seriously all day, and I'm pretty much 95% positive that it's fake. Plus, it DID originate on 4chan, and even if the Snape Kills Dumbledore spoiler was first posted on that site, that doesn't automatically mean that this is real, too. Besides, the pixels give it away. It's ONLY pixelated around the words, and the pixels aroun the stars form a PERFECT square. Somebody took a photo of a book, saved it, and the pixels were uniform, not just around the words. Not to mention the grammatical errors, and 'Teddy Lupie.' No way it's real.

It can't be D:

This epilogue fits in perfectly with the corny and cheese infested crap!fest that was HBP.

[info]damodread on July 16th, 2007 02:08 am (UTC)
Sure
Harry and Ginny have 3 kids: James Potter, Lily Potter, and Albus Severus Potter

Ron and Hermione have 2 kids: Rose and Hugo

Neville becomes Herbology professor

Lupin and Tonks have a child, but it's assumed they're dead because their kid has supper with the Potters 4 nights a week. His name is Teddy Lupin

Draco has a son named Scorpius

The part that's hardest for me to believe is Albus Severus Potter. JKR often talks about how horrible and mean Snape is. I doubt she'll make Harry love him that much, even if he does die for the cause. No matter what happens, Snape was always a jerk to Harry.

I can only speak for myself, but I know that I personally would not be freaking out over this even if things I did not want to happen happened, but were at least written well enough that I could accept it as canon. This supposed epilogue? Is a crappy piece of unoriginal, disgustingly happy rubbish. I've honestly seen fanfiction with authors as young as 13 that were written better than this, way back in the pre-HBP days. That's the reason I can't take HBP seriously. Almost everything I wanted to happen did not happen. In fact, the things I did not want to happen happened, and I hated it, not because of the actual events in question, but because it wasn't even written well. So. That's my problem with these. It's not so much the content, but the delivery and how inappropriate an end to the series it feels.

"We haven't heard a word from JKR or the publishing company about this epilogue's validity."

That's true. But just for the record, a 1) YouTube video which devulged in the contents of the alleged epilogue was deleted by YouTube on behalf of Bloomsbury Publishing. A 2) flickr photostream hosting the four photos was deleted by request of "Devereux Chatillon on behalf of JK Rowling" because of "infringement." This LJ post 3) http://simmysim.livejournal.com/471641.html has recieved a cease and desist notice.

That doesn't mean that these leaks ARE in fact valid. But it does mean they're being looked at, and possibly seriously.
Maria: harry & hermione[info]amphigory on July 16th, 2007 02:16 am (UTC)

My Personal Motto: Don't Get Caught: ginny weasley[info]ihavewildrice on July 16th, 2007 02:17 am (UTC)
I really don't think this is a shipping thing for the most part. People get it. R/Hr and H/G; it's not as if anyone in this fandom is going to be completely shocked if that's the way it ends up. They have hope that it won't, and that is not too bad of a thing to me. I personally want Harry to have a nice ending with Ginny, but this didn't give me enough answers. It felt like someone picked some random characters and details and forced them in there.

I would like to add that mentioning Fabian is NOT at all a big deal. It is not some "end all confirmation" of the spoilers like people think. If you will remember back to just a little while ago, we had some really convincing, elaborate spoilers that involved characters I don't even remember. That person had obviously done their homework. This is the last HP book, and HP fans are crazyyyyyyyyyyyy frankly. Do you really expect anything that isn't insanely convincing, except from random trolls who no one believes for a second?

On the other hand, the typos don't mean that it's a fake. Fug, anyone?

On the other other hand, the Malfoys name their children after influential, famous leaders. The Blacks name their children after constellations and other astronomical things. I have complete faith that Jo realizes this. Draco's name falls into both categories because his mother is a Black, but HE is still a Malfoy. IMO, Draco would want to continue the Malfoy family tradition regardless of his feelings about his father or whatever. Jo is obviously aware of the name thing, but it could just be a slight mix up on her part. Or maybe she has some fondness for scorpions. Who knows?

The girl whose source has confirmed this also said that Ron gets kidnapped by Voldemort who is apparently an H/Hr shipper. Sounds quite reliable to me, except not really. I would say that we can just about rule that out. I have not seen a single confirmation from a reliable source. If there is one, could someone point me to it? I am going to wait until there is sufficient evidence beyond "It looks real!" and "It looks fake!" to actually make up my mind.

Last but not least, all shipping preferences aside, that is a very nice icon. I like it. :)

I think the line that is make or break is Harry saying Snape was "the bravest man he ever knew." Either this book so rocks or that is the fakest thing I've ever seen.

We come full circle and Harry get's his heart's desire. Vomitous perhaps but I can see her doing that.

And the epilogue is easy to spread because it's short and it was at the end. The person didn't have to dig for it. So, the only spoiler truly gleaned is that Harry lives.

My bet is that the scans are real, but maybe that's just wishful thinking because I liked what I read. Now that I spend most of my time at work and have a rather high stress job, I would much rather read a cheesy happy ending than a well written sad ending. And if this truly is going to be the last book, I don't have a problem with giving the names of the kids and such. If we were going to get a book 8, it might be cheesy but as this is the last, I think it's nice to have a look at the future. =)

As for the deleting, well, I don't think that's an indication of whether it's real at all. I would bet that the people sending the letters/e-mails requesting removal of scans probably have no idea if it's real themselves.
sacto1654[info]sacto1654 on July 16th, 2007 02:39 am (UTC)

I do think the scans are real because I've seen them on another site online and they look like it was done on a flatbed scanner. It would take an EXPERT of Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro to "fake" the effects of flatbed scanning on a printed book and substitute in the fake text.

Also, the name of the first chapter of Deathly Hallows is almost a perfect match for the manuscript version mentioned in the Guardian (UK) article.

As much as I think this reads like kinda poor fanfic (or just straight up fan servicing), one thing people seem to forget is that we have no context for the epilogue. May be this book is a slaughter fest, and we need this epilogue to make up for it. I just hope if this is real, it will make more sense in the context of the work as a whole. I would hope for more info on others, but it could be that the answers are already there. So...I'll hold my disappointment until I read the whole thing...

As a slasher, I don't expect to see the series end the way *I* would have it end: it's a given that THAT is never going to happen. In addition, as an slasher, I really don't care HOW the series ends, because I *live* in AU-land, and I'm bloody well going to be rewriting the ending with fanfic ANYWAY. So while the rest of the world is gnashing their teeth and crying O Noes! I'll be like, Yeah, Jo, nice one; now, hmm, let's rewrite the last half the book into a fanfic that ends with Harry and Draco in bed together...

So, all that taken into consideration, I'm fine with the epilogue scans, if they turn out to be real; more than fine, I'm happy with them. I want Harry and Draco and Ron and Hermione to survive the trials ahead of them; and if the price for that is having to endure an ending that reads like fanfiction.net fanfic, well, I'll deal with that.
