Writer's Block: Your Favorite Series: One Last Go Round

If you could pick any TV show that has been off the air to come back for one more season, which show would you pick and why?

Submitted by [info]idle_kid_city

For me it's The Sentinel. Though I enjoyed the X-Files, TS is what really truly got me into fandom, because that show had everything I was looking for - it was a buddy/buddy show (and one of them was a cop - bonus! *g*) that really valued friendship and loyalty above all else. Jim and Blair were amazing characters that I truly cared about.

There was so much more the show could've done but it was canceled by network idiots. [sigh]

So there's my answer. What's YOURS?  :-)

Oh Dear... LOL!

Hmmm... so does it mean you're becoming a bit too... "involved"... in a game when you start having dreams about your favorite player?? *snikker* Poor Eric Hinske. It's a good thing he's married, ROFL!

Sadly, the Rays lost to the Angels last night thanks to some bad ump calls, not so great plays by the people put in to pinch hit, and some excellent plays by the Angels.

I just posted here on [info]fandom_lawyers about this case in which the Northern District of California stated that the Fair Use doctrine "permits limited use of copyright materials without the owner's permission."

A very important case for vidders, ficcers, wrockers, fanartists, teachers, librarians, academics, and basically anyone who creates transformative works of any type.

Well, I thought at least one part of the court's ruling was sparkly... )

ETA: Okay, this was really incongruous among all the SGA Is Cancelled and Devon Murray Isn't Coming to Dragon*Con misery on my flist. I don't even have a good LOLcat involving/invoking the court's ruling in the Universal case! But I'd love one!

Project Runway!

Thought I'd pass this along – media scholar Henry Jenkins is working on a teacher's guide for media studies that involves fanfic use. "I want to know what fans think of this material and so I am posting it here in hopes of soliciting your comments. There are so many teachers and librarians in fandom that I suspect you have a special stake in making sure we get this material right and a special insight into how we might bridge between these two worlds."

Speaking of bridging worlds, I have some very half-finished thoughts that I'd been meaning to write about since June. While on our trip to NY we went to the folk art museum and saw an exhibit that instantly made me think of fanfic, especially since the exhibit itself was about works influenced by other works. Re that photo of the Spanish basketball team: it may have been a joke, but it was still racist. How is that so hard to comprehend?

I'm watching the US vs. Spain game that I DVR'd from Saturday, and the commentators say the photo has not appeared in any Chinese media (all state run), and probably won't, which -- so they have no idea? I find that really interesting.

Still Alive

No con report from me yet, but we had FUN FUN SO MUCH FUN!!! Ever since I got home, though, it's been all about catching up on editing work and trying to shake off a gross sore throat that attacked me Monday.

Anyway. FUN!!! Much fun was had. And I'll get some kind of probably incoherent report up as soon as possible. Oh, and my vid, too...

I really really have no control - my mind is a strange place. *look*

*hides* I'm going to fandom hell I think.

Wow, guys, I was just over at the new community, [info]j2_slash_awards and to my surprise and delight, I see that [info]trueshellz has nominated my story, This Fragile Heart for Best Romance! Squee!

I've never had an SPN story of mine nominated for anything before, so I'm thrilled beyond belief. :-)

It says there will be five choices made available for final voting in each category, so I guess my story needs to be nominated several times to make the final ballot, but still, even if it's only this one person selecting me it still means a lot. *g*
(Many thanks to [info]popmusicjunkie over at [info]spn_chicago for the info)

Heads up to all you folks here in the Chicago area - don't plan on seeing the season premiere of season four at 8pm on September 18th.

Why? Because YET AGAIN our show is being pre-empted by a friggin' White Sox game.

I am SO PISSED I can't even tell you. I am SO tired of this happening.

And god knows when we'll actually see it, because baseball is also showing all day AND all night on Saturday, the normal time when WGN would re-run the pre-empted shows.

This is going to turn out to be like Ghostfacers, when WGN threw it on randomly at like 1 am and we'll all have to guess and try and set our VCRs/DVRs hoping to catch it.

And of course this means the ratings for the season premiere will take a hit, since Chicago's won't be counted. Yeah, that's a GREAT way to start off the new season.

I truly do just want to punch something right now.

([info]spnnewsletter - could this news be put in the next issue so that Chicago folks are aware? Thanks!)

New Brian Austin Green Video Interview

  • Aug. 20th, 2008 at 1:01 AM
Fox has a bunch of new video interviews with the whole cast of Sarah Connor. I started with Brian because I adore Reese so, and I'm working on getting the other us soon.

The video is here

I just love the way his eyes light up when he's talking about the "quiet moments" and, well, all of it!

I picked up the DVD today in the cool tin from Best Buy -- can't wait to see the commentaries and bloopers!

meme

I got meme'd by [info]rubyb, who really does know me too well for this sort of thing :P

Comment on this post. I will choose seven interests from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so others can play along.

footrot flats; Dad's fault. He collected the series (for those that don't know, it's a New Zealand comic book series) when they had some kind of offer with the weekend paper to get one per week. He missed a couple, but most are there. I fell in love as a kid and have remained in love. My favourite characters are Horse and Rangi ;)
macgyver; Mum's fault. She used to love MacGyver, so I sat up late at night to watch it with her. And again, fell in love and remained in love. It's his fault I like guys with long hair, I'm sure of it.
ncis; My own fault. I don't even remember how I got into it, probably through Michael having been on Dark Angel? I didn't get into it big time until Cote De Pablo came on.
dirt bikes; Hmm... iffy one. I think what sparked off this love was Hanson's If Only video with the dirt bikes in the desert. There were some awesome shots in that video.
turtles; [info]imcrazybeauty's fault. Long story short we came up with one of our usual random scenarios and I chimed in with the famous Simpsons quote "would somebody please think of the children?!" which remind me of Willy saving the turtles "who will save the wee turtles?! Agh! Somebody save me from the wee turtles!" So now it's always "somebody think of the turtles!" And along with that, my TMNT love was also rekindled with the latest movie. And turtles are just damn cute, alright?! :P
trucks; Dad's fault. He used to drive the old Coca Cola trucks and bring the truck home with him at night. And every now and then I got to go to work with him. So I spent a lot of my childhood years in/around trucks, thus the love. They're also fun to drive :)
road trips; HA. Ok. For as long as I can remember, the family has always gone on a road trip on public holidays (Easter/Christmas/Queen's Birthday/Labour Day/whatever). Either up to Geraldton or out to the country towns to visit family, or just somewhere random we haven't been before. They died off when my parents divorced, but then I went either North or South with Grandad instead. In 1998 I went to Adelaide for thefirst time with Dad (by air) and we drive in 2001 for the first time. I got my driver's license the second that I could and have been driving pretty constant since then, and now obviously I go on my own road trips with anyone who'll come with. And I dunno... you can't explain the magnet of the road to anyone who hasn't been there/done that ^_-

~*~

Work = still frustrating, but early mornings are now fun.
New house = being moved into over the next four days, starting now.
Weather = FRICKEN COLD.
Puppies = are too cute. Marilyn has herself a miniature Shih Tzu which fits in my hand at 8 weeks. I want! :(
Bikes = also wanting one. Just need to organise funding. Meh. Especially if I want to get to the US and/or Europe next year. Did order aviators this week though :D
Supernatural = 28 DAYS!
New 3 Doors Down album = KICKS ASS. And they thank Hanson in it too ^_-

Also, I've been on such an Evanesence/The Used/12 Stones kick that I'm thinking of dying my hair black again. Maybe with the rest of the blue I had left over in the fringe/underneath. Thoughts?

Still a Little Bit of Your Song In My Ear

  • Aug. 20th, 2008 at 12:57 AM
Ok, I've had this meme on my computer for a while, I'm just now getting around to posting it.

Name five SIX songs (or whole playlists, if you want to get ambitious) that you associate with particular fictional characters

These are by no means fanmixes or reflective of the character's personal music choices; they are ONLY songs from my personal music collection that make me think of these characters. [And YES, there are DL links for each song if you would like to have them!]

Living In America!

  • Aug. 19th, 2008 at 8:05 PM
I'm not big on preaching politics to anyone, let alone in my journal; however, with the election coming up in November and our shaky economy, I think the documentary I.O.U.S.A should be seen by, every person who has a stake in the US Economy, whether you're a citizen or an international investor.

I belong to NEITHER the Democratic or Republican party, so I have ZERO agenda here. And if we're REALLY being honest, despite the propoganda from BOTH SIDES, no matter WHO is voted president this November will have much power to CHANGE ANYTHING. It's a sad, but true, fact these days. The REAL power/control of this country lies in CONGRESS; so unless we can change all of the corrupt-ies in both Houses, nothing is going to change. </pessimism>

I don't know how truthful this documentary is or what type of bias this filmmaker has, but in economic times we find ourselves in, it sounds like something we should ALL BE AWARE OF :)

In any case, this documentary is going to be shown THIS THURSDAY ONLY at 7:30PM PST.

Here's the summary from IMDB:
I.O.U.S.A. boldly examines the rapidly growing national debt and its consequences for the United States and its citizens. As the Baby Boomer generation prepares to retire, will there even be any Social Security benefits left to collect? Burdened with an ever-expanding government and military, increased international competition, overextended entitlement programs, and debts to foreign countries that are becoming impossible to honor, America must mend its spendthrift ways or face an economic disaster of epic proportions. Throughout history, the American government has found it nearly impossible to spend only what has been raised through taxes. Wielding candid interviews with both average American taxpayers and government officials, Sundance veteran Patrick Creadon (Wordplay) helps demystify the nation's financial practices and policies. The film follows U.S. Comptroller General David Walker as he crisscrosses the country explaining America's unsustainable fiscal policies to its citizens. With surgical precision, Creadon interweaves archival footage and economic data to paint a vivid and alarming profile of America's current economic situation. The ultimate power of I.O.U.S.A. is that the film moves beyond doomsday rhetoric to proffer potential financial scenarios and propose solutions about how we can recreate a fiscally sound nation for future generations
