FictionAlley announces the SpellCast Azkatraz Podcast Play Sweepstakes Spectacularrr! SpellCast is producing a live podcast play during Azkatraz’s Podcast Palooza, and this year we are hosting a contest for the featured plays. We will select three short plays to be performed live by conference attendees during the podcast.

The nitty gritty:

- The play, when performed, should be between ten and fifteen minutes in length.
- There will be one winner from each category: drama, comedy and romance.
- The script should in some way incorporate the wizard prison Azkaban, whether it be the setting, the topic of discussion, or a parody of a pop culture prison show (such as Prison Break or Arrested Development).
- The play is required to have a narrator.
- The content of the play should be rated the equivalent of PG-13 or lower.
- Keep in mind that while this play will be performed live at the conference, the intention is to be a “radio play” in which all action is heard, not seen. The stage directions should be sounds that can be made by either the actors or the audience. Remember, an active audience is a happy audience!

The contest is open from March 15th through May 31st. Submit your original script to contest@spellcastpodcast.com. Questions may also be directed to this e-mail address. Winners will be announced June 15th.

Cooler weather and turning leaves are a sure sign that Halloween is almost upon us. To celebrate, SpellCast is holding a Halloween Story Challenge! To enter, see below:

- Halloween must be a prevalent theme in the story.
- Stories must range from five hundred to two thousand words in length.
- Any story that would garner anything over an “R” rating for content will be disqualified.
- Proper spelling and grammar is required for all entries.

The deadline for entry is Friday, October 24th. Entries can be submitted to halloween@spellcastpodcast.com or on the Halloween Challenge thread at the SpellCast Book Club. A judging panel of SpellCast and FictionAlley staffers will select three winners to be featured in a special Halloween edition of SpellCast that will be released at midnight on October 31st.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave a comment on this post or make a post at the SpellCast Book Club. Happy writing and best luck

As a prelude to Banned Books Week later this September, SpellCaster Venessa sat down with a panel of fanfic writers and fanartists for a philosophical discussion of the rewards, challenges, controversy and comedy of producing material for "mature audiences" in the Harry Potter fandom. Some of our show highlights:

- Meet the panel: artists [info]tripperfunster and [info]mariahgem, and writers [info]bennmorland (fic journal: [info]spkr_4_the_dead) and [info]maple_mahogany.
-Ethics versus Aesthetics - what's the difference between art and *cough* pornography?
-To Squick Or Not To Squick: The stuff we can't bare to look at (and can't look away from).
-Staying in character, telling a good story, and avoiding the senseless stuff.
-*gasp* Sexuality in Canon?!
-Slash = Sexy!
-Fandom is about creative freedom... or is it?
-The audience for adult fandom creativity could be made up of anyone... even you.
-Does Harry Potter nurture deviance?
-Writing and Drawing for a global audience
-Group therapy - the panel shares what it's like to be censored.
-Who's responsible for protecting the kids?
-How do we protect ourselves as artists and authors?
-The Feedback Segment: Our panel addresses YOUR comments! :)
-Reaching Conclusions: Erotic art/fiction making us better writers and authors.

Thank you to our guests and to our listeners for participating! Be sure to stay tuned to Beyond SpellCast for more "Alternative Listening", and leave us your comments!

Finally, Spellcast is proud to present the two podcast plays recorded live July 20th at the London Harry Potter convention, Sectus. These plays were both submitted to us by George Pushdragon and take on a humorous look at the Minister of Magic's trial and the conditions at Azkaban prison.

Honestly! Who is in charge of Occupational Health & Safety at the Ministry? Brains in tanks and unmarked dimensional portals! In this little trial transcript, Sirius' estate gets litigious, Fudge talks facial hair, Lucius struggles with life in the clink, and Albus Dumbledore has only one buttock. Naturally.

The cast of "The Estate of Sirius Black v. Minister of Magic"

Marchbanks - Purplefluffycat

Tromedlov - Mikey

Fudge - Heidi

McGonagall -

The cast for "'Who's Your Daddy' An Inquiry into the Conditions at Azkaban Prison"

Fudge - Madeleine

Percy - Dessie

Volde-Morton - Mikey

Umbridge - Flame

Reg - Sidney

Lucius - ThePinkRabbit

Of course, we would like to thank everyone who took part in the play, the Sectus Committee, as well as our wonderful live audience at the recording.

If you have any comments or would like to take part in future SpellCast Theater productions, feel free to email us, and as always, don't forget to vote for SpellCast on PodcastAlley!

Sidney [userpic]

Like the rest of the Harry Potter fandom, the SpellCast crew had a lot to say about the final book in the series. In this SpellCast Special Episode, you'll hear thoughts from our cast and crew as well as listeners. In particular, look for:

- Release party coverage from Boston's Harvard Square

- A plot discussion with Robert, Sidney, and Venessa

- A roundtable covering the highs and lows of Deathly Hallows with Zorb, Josh, Gwendolyn Grace, and SevenSickles

- Contributed reviews from listeners Bevan, Michelle & Michelle

Deathly Hallows may be in our hands, but the Summer of Potter continues. Look for continuing coverage of major fandom gatherings in upcoming episodes!
