Thaumatrope Reopens to submissions for guest editor Sean Wallace Thaumatrope is proud to announce guest editor Sean Wallace! Starting immediately Thaumatrope (a twitter fiction magazine of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror) has reopened for submissions through to July 31st, 2009 to collect stories for special run of -punk themed tweets to be published in the month of August. The science fiction field is often populated with new literary movements, and for August we want to honor what has come before, and what will come after, specifically with stories featuring elements from various -punk categories: cyberpunk, steampunk, clockpunk, biopunk, and many more. Hardboiled, noir, or edgy, it doesn't matter, but Thaumatrope wants your best: pushing genre boundaries with the best of them, bringing to your attention "punk" as you have never see it before . . . welcome to #thaumapunk Sean Wallace is the founder and editor for Prime Books, which won a World Fantasy Award in 2006. In his spare time he is also co-editor of Clarkesworld Magazine (Hugo nominee), and Fantasy Magazine; the editor of the following anthologies: Best New Fantasy; Fantasy; Horror: The Best of the Year; Jabberwocky; Japanese Dreams; and The New Gothic; and co-editor of Bandersnatch; Phantom; and Weird Tales: The 21st Century. He currently resides in Rockville, MD, with his wife, Jennifer, and their two cats, Amber and Jade. http://thaumatrope.greententacles.com/submissions/stories/ | | Monday, June 15th, 2009 | 3:53 am [aliensoul77]

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - New Surreal Anthology I am putting together an anthology of horror called "The Ultimate Surreal". I have been published in Rare, an anthology of horror, on gothic.net as well as many other anthologies. I am looking for surreal horror fiction grounded in reality which ever so softly slips into the surreal. I don’t want splatterpunk, over the top grossout horror. I am looking for more psychologically surreal stuff, it can have alien fetuses in it as long as those alien fetuses are integral to the plot. Think of David Cronenberg meets David Lynch with a dab of Tim Burton. I am looking for artists, fiction writers and perhaps even poetry if it is truly surreal. I like ambiguity, where the reader can be left to determine if the narrator was insane or not and I am a big fan of everyday horror, the way a simple day at the office can turn freaky scary. Psychological horror is preferred over gory horror, cussing and sex is okay as long as it has a point. 500-1500 words. Deadline is: Oct 31st, 2009 but if you want to send something over to let me know you are interested early like a rough draft I would be happy to look it over and let you know if it is what I am looking for. You can submit it to me at dangrn77@hotmail.com: put Surrealism Anthology in the subject posting. It can have a horror context or sci-fi or even dark fantasy as long as it operates on the same level of the surrealist's manifesto which is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surrealist_Manifesto "two distant realities brought together to create a new, uncanny union" Consider the weird vibe of the film “Eraserhead” which gives us ordinary circumstances, a seemingly familiar world then slowly begins to tear away every thread of sanity we have and exposes the grim horror within. Show me your inner surrealist! Surreally Yours, Daniel w. Gonzales | | Saturday, May 30th, 2009 | 9:04 pm [domynoe]

Ideomancer Speculative Fiction
(I don't think these guidelines have been posted since they've changed.) Ideomancer publishes speculative fiction and poetry that explores the edges of ideas; stories that subvert, refute and push the limits. We want unique pieces from authors willing to explore non-traditional narratives and take chances with tone, structure and execution, balance ideas and character, emotion and ruthlessness. We also have an eye for more traditional tales told with excellence. We are especially interested in non-traditional formats, hyperfiction, and work that explores the boundaries not just of its situation but of the internet-as-page. We are open to fiction submissions during December-January, March-April, June-July, September-October. (Poetry submissions are currently closed.) Stories should be e-mailed to us at fiction (at) ideomancer (dot) com with "Submission: Your Story Title" in the subject line. All submissions should use Standard Manuscript Format and be attached to your e-mail as an .rtf file. Please include a short cover letter in your email with your name, story title, genre, and word count. Fiction submissions should be no longer than 7000 words. Pay is 3 cents a word USD (our word processor count — Microsoft Word) up to a maximum of US$40. **************************************** **************************************** ********************** Also, we are currently looking for two new fiction editors. The time commitment involved is about 2-5 hours/week. ( More details... ) | | Saturday, April 11th, 2009 | 4:47 pm [andrewkaye]

Defenestration: Summer of Fantasy Defenestration, the literary magazine dedicated to humor, is looking to fill its summer issues with comedic fantasy fiction. All subgenres welcome (high fantasy, urban fantasy, dark fantasy, steampunk, etc.); as long as it’s also funny, we’d love to see it. Depending on the amount of quality submissions, the fantasy theme may span our June, July, and August issues. So give us your best shot. We’re also looking for fantasy-themed non-fiction, poetry, and artwork. Please see our guidelines for how and where to send your submissions. Defenestration accepts submissions year-round. Even though summer has a fantasy theme, submissions of humorous fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and artwork is always welcome. | | Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 | 4:11 pm [kim_richards]

Coyote Wild on hiatus
Coyote Wild is going on hiatus. If you've been waiting to hear from us, please consider your submission released. I know that sucks, as a writer, and I'm sorry -- and we'll be back at some point hopefully sooner rather than later. best, Mac | 10:36 am [harmonyfb]

FYI, From the Moderator
I have seen reports (on other communities I read) of a malware virus which has been targeting communities. It reportedly manifests as a post which announces the closure of the community and invites members to click on an explanatory link. I have no idea if these reports are accurate or not. But forewarned is forearmed, so just in case...we are not closing. If such a post shows up, please report it and don't click. | | Monday, March 2nd, 2009 | 1:52 pm [dotar_sojat]

Diet Soap Guidelines Diet Soap's Webpage Diet Soap is an anarchist 'zine and the writers, editors, and artists involved are often accused of being impolite. However, most involved refuse to moderate their tone, and I would encourage writers who aren't too polite and who have a natural aversion to the pettiness of power and authority to send in their work for consideration. We only pay $5 a story, and spending the time on a work of fiction or nonfiction and then being paid so little is really a money losing proposition, but rest assured that publishing the work is also a money losing proposition for me. We are open for submission on the next issue is on the subject of slavery with a special focus on Wage Slavery. Please check out our guidelines at dietsoap.org. The most current issue is available as a pdf and I recommend you seek a free copy before submitting. Please write me at douglain (at) dietsoap dot org to receive a pdf. | 5:10 pm [harmonyfb]

Moderator Reminder
Publishers: We'd love to hear about any calls for submissions that you have. But this is not the place to promote your magazine, anthology, or podcast. If you're wondering whether to post that huge color picture of your upcoming project - which is no longer accepting subs - please don't. This community has very few up-front rules, but that's a big one. Please abide by it. |
