| Canon or Fanon -- Denethor's attitude toward Elves? |
[18 Jun 2008|11:43pm] |
I'm working on a fanfic, and I wanted to make sure I didn't inadvertently pass on fanon. I was hoping that the experts would steer me in the direction of canon.
I remember reading somewhere that Denethor hated Elves, and did not allow them to enter Gondor. Unfortunately, I don't remember the source, so I can't evaluate it. (It feels wrong; after all, Elves and Men were allies against Sauron before, and Denethor, of all people, would know that history.) But I'm not sure where exactly I would find the information in canon.
Thank you in advance!

| new Denethor website |

Hey there, everyone. I'm not sure how closely this falls within the community guidelines, but I thought you folks might find it interesting -- and besides, the place has been awfully quiet for the past few months.
I've been trying to put together a collection of links to Denethor fiction, fanart, etc. from around the internet, and I currently have about 150 stories linked, not including the drabbles, poems, essays, etc. (Who knew there was so much Denethor fic out there? o_O) A number of the stories, of course, were written by spcd members; and one reason for my posting this here is to make sure nobody has any great objection to my linking to their works. (If you do object, just let me know and I'll remove the links -- though I do hope nobody does! ;)
So feel free to check out the site, and, if you like, to send me links to anything you've written/drawn that I may have overlooked. Just follow the banner. :)

| Denethor or Aragorn? |
[02 May 2006|10:15am] |
This debate seems to come up from time to time, and I thought I would sort of throw my hat in the ring.
About a year ago, I got into a fairly heated discussion about Denethor and Aragorn at HASA. Several posts included some very interesting points about these two characters, and I thought maybe others would enjoy reading the discussion and/or making comments on it.
You can find excerpts at my journal home at
http://roh-wyn.livejournal.com/2240.html
For those of you who have already seen this and commented on it, I apologize for the cross-posts.

| What Tolkien half said, or left unsaid. |
[24 Mar 2006|01:23pm] |
Regarding comments to the previous post, I see that Tolkien actually left quite a bit of ambiguity about what was actually said between Faramir and Denethor in "The Siege of Gondor." Faramir's account of his meeting Frodo and Sam is not actually narrated; I had assumed that Faramir did not tell Denethor about the Ring, but I see now that there is also support for making the opposite assumption. I'm curious what you guys think.Poll #697271 Faramir told his tale
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All1. What was your impression the first time you read the scene in which Faramir relates to Denethor his meeting with Frodo and Sam? 2. What is your impression of the scene now? ( And some follow-up questions behind the cut. )

| Do you wish then that our places had been exchanged? |
[21 Mar 2006|01:50pm] |
While there seems to be less of the "Denethor eats babies" sentiment going around lately, I've seen several people arguing that, however noble the Steward may otherwise seem, he deserves to be hated anyway, because, after all, he did tell Faramir in no uncertain terms that he wished he were dead.
Only we know it wasn't quite like that. Anyone care to discuss?
( Do you wish then that our places had been exchanged? )
Cross-posted to my journal. Sorry to those who see this twice...

Sure, we've all seen Abusive!Evil!Denethor fics. As long as there are movie fangirls who have not read the book, we'll probably continue to see fics featuring some poor excuse for a Steward who'd love to rape a Sue or wangsty!Filmamir. But how often do you see fics that not only avoid fanon murderous tendencies, but all of Denethor's bite entirely? How prettily can authors paint him before you can no longer recognize the difference between their Denethor and the typical Legolas!Stu?

| Another nail in the coffin of the whole Abusive!Denethor concept |

I was reading through the section on the Palantiri in Unfinished Tales yesterday and I came across one of Tolkien's original notes to the text that struck me as quite telling:
The use of the palantiri was a mental strain, especially on men of later days not trained to the task, and no doubt in addition to his anxieties this strain contributed to Denethor's "grimness". It was probably felt earlier by his wife than by others and increased her unhappiness, to the hastening of her death.

Yes, that totally sounds like an abusive relationship. Not.

| Aha, at last! |
[22 Nov 2005|05:36pm] |
Some of you may have already seen this, but I thought it deserved mentioning here:
Finally, Denethor has a character category at fanfiction.net!
So if you have any stories about Denethor up at ff.net, you can now edit them so that readers can find them by searching Denethor's name. Just go to "Stories: List Stories: Edit" and select him from the list next to "Character 1" or "Character 2."
In a way, it's almost a pity... now I have to take down my Get Denethor a Character Category campaign banner, which I'd become rather fond of.
Cheers to you guys who set up the campaign -- it looks like it made a difference after all. :)

| Hi! |

Hi, I'm new here and very glad I found this community. I am originally a Faramir fan, but found it impossiblt not to get facsinated with his dad too. I use every possibility to rant about the Denethor I so often come across in fanfic! Hope to have fun here, where people seem to think in a very similar way.

| The "Character Category for Denethor" Campaign |
[24 Feb 2005|01:45pm] |
<
Calling all writers and readers of Denethor fanfiction!
We're sure most of you know of the fanfiction archive, fanfiction.net. We're sure therefore that most of you are also aware that currently ff.net doesn’t have a Denethor character sub-section in their Lord of the Rings category. As the fan fiction writers amongst us will know, this is in no way fair.
At last count, in the archive there were approximately 70 stories where Denethor could be considered one of the two main characters (the figure is far greater if we consider all the stories where he is mentioned in the description, though these are likely to be small appearances in Boromir or Faramir stories). This is a larger number than the 44 stories in the Treebeard section, 43 in Lothiriel and about 21 in Celeborn--characters for whom there are sections already.
Does this sound fair to you? Of course it doesn’t. What we predict is that enough of us come forward requesting a Denethor sub-section, then ff.net will have to concede and create one. But how do we go about this? There are proper methods and we believe this is the best way to begin. Here is what fanfiction.net's support FAQ says about requesting new categories:
"You must have a story ready to submit before requesting a category.
Request procedure:
Send an email to newcategory@fanfiction.net with all the necessary details."
Our "headquarters" is at this thread on the Brothers of Gondor message board: http://www.menofgondor.com/forum/index.php/topic,168.0.html Feel free to visit it if you have any questions.
Join us in our campaign to give this fascinating character the category he deserves!! The Denethor Character Category Campaign Team

| ADMIN: New community |
[16 Jul 2004|11:43am] |
I have created a new community, steward_fics for fics that, funnily enough, deal with the Stewards of Gondor. Please feel free to join and (after you've read the rules, of course) post fics. The best thing is, if we mischaracterise Denethor in our fics there, we can mock ourselves here afterwards.

I was rereading the section about the Palantiri in Unfinished Tales, researching some material for a Denethor fic I'm writing, and I thought the following passage would be of interest for fellow SPCD-ers:

I find that I constantly have to defend Denethor against general “he was a pathetic, abusive, insane loser” rants. Even before the movie came out, it was a problem, now it’s almost impossible. The biggest problem is the insane argument; people just can’t seem to GET IT. –gnashes teeth- -cough- sorry.
So, I’m composing a list of contributing factors to our good Steward going nuts and killing himself. I was wondering if you could take a look and help me out.

| ADMIN: Temporary changes to moderation status |
[26 May 2004|01:31pm] |
I will be having surgery next Friday (I will be admitted to hospital tomorrow) and I will be without Internet access for at least two weeks. As such, I am putting this community on unmoderated status while I'm away, that is to say, I won't be going over the posts to see if they're acceptable. I trust that everybody here will comply with the community's rules while posting even if I'm not here to enforce them. Any infractions will be dealt with when I return. But you're all intelligent and reasonable here, so there won't be any infractions, will there? :)
See you later and keep the spcd going!

| Introduction |
[18 May 2004|03:32pm] |
Hello, everyone, nice to meet you! cadiliniel told me about this community on the Brothers of Gondor discussion board. (I'd like to invite you all to check out the board--it's low-traffic and Denethor-friendly.) I'm looking forward to participating in discussion here, and I plan to post comments to some of the earlier entries as soon as I've finished introducing myself.
I find Denethor to be a highly tragic and fascinating character, and I think his treatment in the films was a real shame. At least, I think John Noble was a fine choice to play him and he seems to have a good grasp and sympathy for the character, but the script was a major disappointment. I saw ROTK seven times in the theater, and on six of those occasions someone either giggled or cheered when he died. The infamous staff-whacking got a similar reaction, and I'm so tired of hearing people say "Yeah, but what a great moment, and he sooo deserved it!"
I write a little fanfiction myself and am currently working on a book-based Denethor story. I hope and plan to keep him canonical!
I'll conclude with a few links which may interest you:
