Leiana [16 Oct 2005|02:08pm]

This band features Roy Mayorga, ex member of SOULFLY and NAUSEA, and also Chuck Treece, ex member of BAD BRAINS, THE ROOTS, G-LOVE.

Check out their myspace, where you can listen to some music. It's kinda heavy, punky. It's actually really fucking good, and you all know how sceptical I am about music!

About Leiana

What happens when you bring together three dynamic, passionate, rock-driven individuals? LEIANA happens: a band that creates determined, energetic, and catchy music filled with influences spanning from traditional punk to skate rock. After growing up immersed in music in the suburbs of Philadelphia and performing in several bands in Los Angeles, illustrious singer Leiana came to realize that in order to make her musical vision a reality she had to go solo. After writing volumes of lyrics on her own, she returned to Philadelphia and met up with the legendary producer/musician Chuck Treece. Treece started to make a name for himself as a session musician, making his mark playing bass on the Billy Joel hit "River of Dreams". The session gigs continued as Treece was able to work with many talented artists such as King Britt, Buck-O-Nine, Res and G. Love, to name but a few. His most recent session work includes collaborations with producer Scott Storch for Jadakiss featuring Mariah Carey, Kevin Little, and Ricky Martin. Plans are already in the works for future sessions with Busta Rhymes, Floetry, Vivian Green, Sean Paul, and Aretha Franklin. Also known for his work as a professional skateboarder, Treece ended his sponsorship in 1990 to focus on a solo music project. The end result is his most memorable session to date – a full-length album entitled Dream'n (Caroline Records). Around this time Treece worked on remixes through Ruffhouse records for numerous artists including Sting, Amy Grant, and the Goats. As a touring musician, Treece auditioned (and was turned down) to be the new lead singer of Bad Brains. But he returned only a few years later as their drummer on three consecutive tours. Life on the road continued as he joined Urge Overkill and toured back to back with Bad Brains. As a friend and collaborator Chuck Treece helped Leiana to sort through her years of lyrics to find music that she could still connect with to this day. In 10 days the duo wrote seven songs with just an acoustic guitar and a drum machine. Later these songs were fleshed out onto a 4-track; the music really became its own once the team recorded professionally. Leiana's first single from her first EP, called "Surfy Punky” found its way onto ESPN's Women's Downhill Skiing TV show. From there the tune was also placed on the soon-to-be-released film "Call to Fly" starring pro skater Todd Falcon, and was also placed on several compilations. In the months that followed Leiana recorded the tune "Dirty Car" with Mike Elizondo (Dr.Dre, Eminem, Fiona Apple). There is no doubt that this talented triumvirate will continue to make sounds that appeal to a broad spectrum of punk and guitar rock enthusiasts. Leiana admits, "Music was all I had growing up. It understood me, and kept me alive one day more. Music is all I ever wanted to do." The group recently returned from a headlining gig at the renowned SXSW (South By Southwest) Festival. In addition, the song "Follow Blind" has made its way onto the Gnarly Dude 2 compilation.

SOULFLY Ask Fans To Help Injured Family Friend - Sep. 9, 2005

The following message was posted on SOULFLY's official web site:

"Recently, our family friend, Joey Nugent, was severely injured in a house fire. You might remember him singing 'Pain' with Max and Richie at past D-Low Memorial shows, or you may have seen him slammin in our SOULFLY videos. He is stage diving with Dana [Max Cavalera's late stepson] at a DEFTONES concert in this photo.

"Because of our fans, over $200,000 has been collected for the Iggy Diabetes Fund, and over 1,500 items of children's clothing and toys are being shipped to an orphanage in Serbia. We have turned tragedy into triumph, and we thank you all.

"Joey's mother has set up a fund for him at Bank of America. The account is titled 'Joey's Fund' and the account number is 4370758910.

"It's a savings account for Joey to help with his mounting medical bills and to replace personal items. He will be hospitalized for at least one year, with months of rehab. If there's a Bank of America in your neighborhood, and you have a spare dollar, and the time, maybe you could contribute to help him rebuild his life. If you are unable to get to a Bank of America, we are accepting check/money orders made out to 'Joey's Fund', which can be mailed to:

Joey's Fund
c/o Oasis Management
3010 East Bloomfield Road
Phoenix, Arizona 85032

"It would be greatly appreciated, even though Joey can't tell you himself now.

"The biggest reward in life is to help others, and SOULFLY fans never stop. SOULFLY is about never giving up, having the strength to carry on AGAINST ALL ODDS, and trusting in God to show us the way. NO HOPE NO FEAR!"

HEAVIEST SOULFLY ALBUM YET!

a couple of select quotes from a recent interview with metalrage.com

Metalrage.com: There's been this quote going around that Max Cavalera has labelled the new album "a calm and peaceful album." Explain to me what a calm Soulfly album sounds like.

Marc Rizzo: "You know what?! There's no way that could be true. Because this record, is the heaviest SOULFLY record so far. It's a mix of SOULFLY, and old-style SEPULTURA that Max was doing back on 'Arise' and 'Beneath the Remains'. It's almost like a thrash record, you know. The real SOULFLY elements are still there, but there's a lot of new songs that are fast-paced, a lot of guitar solos, it's got fast thrash-type rhythms. So I'm pretty sure he didn't say that. Maybe lyrically, but musically it's fucking heavy. It's the best SOULFLY record yet. It's got everything I like in heavy music. A lot of awesome drumming, a lot of double-bass. Lots of fast tempos, Max's vocals are really heavy. I think it's awesome, it's right where 'Prophecy' left off, with a step further to the heavier side. Totally. It's a brutal record, people are going to be shocked when they hear it."

Metalrage.com: SOULFLY is not unfamiliar to the word "experimenting," even soul and traditional Brazilian influences have been put into the records. With all the heavy stuff going on this new record, is there still room for that sort of stuff?

Marc Rizzo: "Yeah, there's a lot of cool jams on it too, but overall it is the most relentless SOULFLY record. It's all 'Boom,' in your face! One after another of just slamming heavy fucking songs that kick your ass, man. There is a couple of jams on it, but it is not as 'jammy' as the earlier records. This record is more song-orientated."
