Fabric folds brushes for Photoshop CS2
It wasn't until someone said something on the Second Life forums that I realized that people could use the fabric folds brushes I'd been playing with. So I took what I had, threw together some more, and made this tutorial to show how to use them. These are not perfect, but they're a start.

The Brushes

How to use the brushes:

Most of the brushes are 512 x 512. They're freely distributable, just don't claim they're yours and sell them. You can resize them, scale them, warp them, whatever you need to do to make your fabric look good. But for now we'll take a look at the plain unaltered brush.

Here's the fabric we're starting with. I'm not doing anything to this image-- any change in its appearance is due entirely to the brushes. And it doesn't need to be said that each brush is applied on a new layer, right? I thought not.

The first brush I made, and the one I play with the most, is the straight folds shadows brush.

Nifty, huh? I set it to multiply, then added the straight folds highlights brush overtop. I set that to overlay, and reduced the opacity so the shine didn't blind me.

I decided I wanted deeper shadows, so I duplicated the shadow layer.

Yay for optical illusions. :)

The next brush pair is the side folds. (I think that's the name. I may have named it something else. Oh well.) Following the same steps as above, here's what came out:

Here's the sweeping folds brush pair.

Stay tuned for part 2, where we take a single fold and do all kinds of stuff to it.

Hello, I'm really new to photoshop and I'm trying to use your brush. I downloaded your file and put it in the brush folder. I opened a photo that I wanted to try it on, except I don't know what to do after that. I'm sorry for being incredibly noob here, but can you explain how to use the brush? I can't find it anywhere and have no idea how to get to where you got in manipulating the brush.

It's okay, we were all noobs at one time. Hell, I'm still a major SL noob. :) Select the brush tool. Click the down-pointing arrow to bring up the palette. Click the right-pointing arrow to bring up your brush options. Select "Fabric Folds," and answer "Yes." The brushes are now loaded and ready to be used.

Select one, position it on your picture, and click. (Remember to do it on a layer above your picture!) There you go. Brush used. :)

If you aren't familiar with layers, or with the other commands in PS, I suggest googling "Basic Photoshop tutorials." Some of them will be for older versions, but a lot of what they say can be applied to CS2 as well. Good luck!

Thank you. I do know how to use layers, hehe. I've been looking for a texture to do the folds for me for the longest time ... Do you think this principle can be applied to the textures function? There are more options there in manipulating how the final result will look; it also had a preview function so you don't have to apply, undo, readjust, etc.

Honestly, I'm completely unfamiliar with that. Do you mean the Textures filter? I'm sure that could be done, but I have no clue how to go about it. I'm not THAT good with Photoshop. :)

It can yes. Make a layer with the fold shadows you want, then remove it. Fill another layer with black, and ctrl(option)+click the layer icon to obtain the selection. Go to the black layer, add a layer mask, left click the mask icon, and fill with white. Make everything else go away, apply the mask, and make that a texture. The only issue I can see you running into is tesselation, but aside from that, it should work.

Can you explain how you can warp the brushes?

Thanks in advance. I've been having a great time playing with these.

Go to the Edit menu, select Transform, and choose Warp. It'll bring up a grid, and you can select points on the grid to move about wherever you choose. You can also choose presets from the drop-down box, like Arc or Flag or whatever, and adjust those to where you want them.

I'm glad you're having fun. :) Hmm, maybe I'll make another set, if I can think of enough fold positions to do.

I was attempting your tutorial and was wondering, what color did you use for the highlights? I did it as is and it just got darker. It also didn't look like highlights so I'm assuming I'm using the wrong color.

Ok cool, I'll try that again ... Could you suggest a way to apply folds in a shirt or skirt part of the outfit?

That, I think, is for another tutorial. I'll need to study the way fabric drapes on the body. I'll try to get that done within the next couple weeks, but I make no promises. :)

I found this thing on wrinkles: http://www.secondstyle.com/downloads/Second_Style_Issue4.pdf

I've been playing with it and the same can be applied to folds (if you draw the lines vertically) but yea, you really need to study the way clothing drapes combined with how it wraps in SL. I've been trying really hard to get some clothing to "flow" and it just isn't working for shirts/skirts :-(. Now I know why I've never found any that does, rofl.

The way they did brushes prior to CS was different. Older brushes will work with newer version, but new ones are not legacy compatible.

I just wanted to drop a quick note to show you how I was able to apply your brushes. I actually made some things before this but this is my most recent work. The sim owner actually liked it so much, he's putting it for sale in our marketplace tomorrow. Woot!

http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/4443/dress003ff8.png

FYI, I used the strait brushes (widened them to about 950 before applying and using warp to pull out the edges).

I don't see a "warp" option in my PS7. Is that exclusive to CS?

It's been so long since I used 7, I don't remember. If it's there, it should be under Edit >Transform >Warp.

So i made this banner ala medieval style and it has a bunch of haning folds in it. Looks sweet, come by and see it sometime. So i start thinking, hey i want to make more but i dont want to spend as much time painting in fabric wrinkles. i wonder if anyone has got a set of ps brushes i can use to shorten the job. . .

if we keep sharing a brain Ceres you are going to have to move to this coast.

Hey, can you drop a LM to your shop on me? Someone asked me to give them the textures on the house, and I want to point her your way.

None whatsoever. If you right-click and save, you should be able to download the files. If that doesn't work, I have no idea.

I'm thanking my lucky stars for your post; looking for some fabric-fold tools was driving me nuts, and the only alternative I've found (designed for GIMP) did me no good, as GIMP kept crashing on my PC. Here's hoping I can use these OK... :-)
