ANNOUNCEMENT

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Sev Love
Hello,
as you may or may not have noticed, we've moved the community and our activities over to insanejournal:

http://asylums.insanejournal.com/snapedom/

The community/asylum is open for everyone to comment. Members can start new posts, that's not different from here.

And that's why new posts will be blocked here from Monday, March 31st.

You can still comment on the old threads, though.

If you want to follow the going-ons on snapedom, the insanejournal snapedom is syndicated. You can subscribe here: snapedom_syn. Just treat it as any other user and friend it. New threads from snapedom then will be announced in your flist.

If you don't want/have an ij account, you can comment anonymously, but please leave your name/handle somewhere in the post.

If you want to use openid, here's a tutorial for how to do it (thank you to [info]the_bitter_word who sent me the link): Open id explained (now with screenshots)

I'll see you on ij. At the moment, we have a house-warming party, and a monthly challenge.

Thinking about Snape's Death Eater past: takes on what he actually did vary from the romantic (All DEs spent 7 days a week killing, torturing, and raping when they weren't having orgies with each other) to whitewash (hidden-away-making-illegal-potions--torture? What torture?).

But really, looking at his observed behavior later: how much of a raider could he have been? If he was the DE equivalent of a combat vet, I'd expect to see both combat-related PTSD (since he clearly still suffers from his adolescent traumas) and also combat reflexes in his classroom. I'd think, myself, that the normal DE raider response to an unexpected explosion would be to hex or AK the source--not a safe reaction in a Potions instructor... (I knew a vet once who, just back, accidentally killed a cat that startled him--threw it across the room so hard he broke its neck.)

And I would think that a combat vet (who'd been in situations where his own and comrade's lives depended on his willingness to kill) would have killed Sirius Black and Lupin in the Shrieking Shack. Given what he thought was going on (a hostage situation involving kids, Black's unknown but formidable abilities, treachery) I think most soldiers would have thought it Snape's positive duty to take out the threat first, not take the risk of trying to capture, subdue, and guard two extremely dangerous opponents.

I also speculate that the reason Barty Jr. impersonated Moody so easily is that a lot of what people took to be Moody's personal quirks were his own PTSD and combat reflexes--and that Barty, as a DE raider, had been in combat enough--on the other side--to develop the same reactions. But Snape had not.

My dad and grampa were combat vets; my uncle, other grandfather, and brother in the military, but not in combat. And it does seem to me that Snape acts more like he'd been in a support role than on the front lines.

I would adore comments from actual vets!

Here are the banners for 'Snape and Love', the February challenge. Under the cut are the banners for [info]geri_chan and [info]mary_j_59, the only two contributions that were made explicitly for the challenge. I think it was a bit confusing that month, since we also had the Valentine's day party going. I think [info]bohemianspirit asked if the two weren't the same, but I never got around to reply to her.

The banners for [info]dickgloucester and [info]bohemianspirit are under the cut, too. More to come.

The two weren't the same. However, if you made a contribution which you think fits both, the party and the challenge, and you'd like to have a banner for it, please reply to this post. It'd be great if you could tag the post in question with the february08 tag, too.

This is the last time that I post the banners here. The banners for the March challenge will be on ij.

ETA: just checked the list again, and [info]dickgloucester and [info]bohemianspirit are on it already. I must have been blind when I last looked, sorry about that.

ETA: The two new banners are here, too. Scroll down. More to come.

ETA: The banner for [info]savine_snape is up now.

Hi, I just joined this community and I hope I am doing this post correctly.

I've long been a fan of Snape and obviously I was quite appalled at the treatment (not just his death) he got in Deathly Hallows...I'm sure you all know just what I'm talking about.

I wrote this metaish essay soon after Deathly Hallows. I will edit it a bit some day, as my opinion on Lily has since worsened slightly and there are some points I'd like to elaborate, but overall the ponderings still stand. Here is a link to "Severus Snape’s Memories - did he stay 'in character' through Deathly Hallows". I'm happy to discuss it with you, even if it is to hear you say I am wrong or an ass ;))

I was listening to the Snapecast from last March, devoted to betrayal and treachery.
Ah, all the things we didn't know! In the swirl of reaction to and integration of SH into fandom, it is interesting to look back at where we were last year. Considering the focus on Dumbledore and Snape this month, and the upcoming Ides of March, it's worth another listen.

March 9th, 2008

Pairing: Snily, but the focus is not the pairing
File Size: 33 MB
File Type: .WMV
Song: "In the End"
Artist: Linkin Park
Summary: We all know that Snape got a bum deal in Book 7 and this song just sums it up. He tried to protect Lily, tried to protect Harry and in the end, nothing mattered and he got screwed by both Dumbeldore and Voldemort. It’s 100% canon except for the hair color of some of the characters.
Warning: Some blood

I know that I pimped this fic "The Alchemist" here awhile ago, but there have been alot of chapter updates, so I thought I would mention it again.  It is Severus/Lily and AU, so if you despise Lily Evans-Potter with the core and essence of your being, you had best avoid, but otherwise, feel free to check it out HERE.  With the exception of the first few chapters which take place in the "Marauders Era", the story takes place during the events of "HBP" and "DH".   I would definitely lable the story more Drama/Angst than romance, but the theme of love and its transformative power is the primary focus, so I added in the Romance catagory for those who happen to confuse romance and love.

Title: "The Alchemist"
Genre: Romance/Drama/Angst
Characters: Lily Evans, Severus Snape
Rating: PG-13
I won't be here over the weekend, so I open it now. You can still post on both communities (although this one here will be locked for new threads sometimes next month. You will always be able to comment on older threads here.

But hopefully new things will happen over there. As you know, I can't maintain two communities at the same time, so ij it is, because of its promising attitude towards fandom.
Here is the link: http://asylums.insanejournal.com/snapedom/

If you don't have an ij account and want to follow the going-ons of snapedom (and since we don't want to lose you), here is the link to the syndicated account:

When you get there, add [info]snapedom_syn as a friend, and our new posts will show up in your flist. You then can hop over to ij (there are links on the entries) and post replies. Everyone can post replies

You can post anonymous (please leave your name)
or with an open id (I know that [info]savine_snape has one, maybe she can help explaining how to use that feature, if you want it,
or with your ij id. Like on lj, basic ij accounts are free, and you never need to do anything with that account, if you set it up for reading purposes only. It does allow you to have an ij flist, and to start new posts on this and other ij asylums (their name for communities). It also allows you to see f-locked posts, something that doesn't work with the feed or the open id. Now, I don't intend to f-lock snapedom again, but in special cases it may be necessary, you never know.

All that said, I hope everything will work out for you without too much stress and you'll keep having fun and interesting discussions on snapedom.

When I was pondering this topic, I thought, "Well, this is going to be a short essay," because quite frankly, I don't see any hard evidence in the text that anyone ever loved him. JKR said in an interview that in a way, Snape is more culpable for his crimes than Voldemort because he had been loved by someone and Riddle/Voldemort had not. Presumably this person was Lily, although as I stated in my December Challenge essay about Lily, I personally feel that we didn't see enough of their relationship for me to get the sense that she cared for him that deeply.

I'm sure most of you are aware of Perfect Imagination - the site which maintains a list of accredited beta readers. If not and you are looking for a beta, this is a good place to look. Recently, however, they have branched out into other fandoms, which has resulted in the relaunch of the site. Asli, the site owner has asked permission to post the following advert here.

An opportunity for beta readers and writers.

Perfect Imagination has been serving the Harry Potter fanfiction community since 2003, providing quality tested beta readers for Harry Potter fanfiction writers. As of March 1st 2008 the site is expanding to include other fandoms and original writing.

Beta readers are asked to take a short test to demonstrate their expertise. When a passing mark is achieved, a beta can choose preferred fandoms and create an individual profile for each. Information such as the genre and length of fanfiction, as well as the preferred relationships and the beta reader’s strengths can be listed and are factored into the search process.

Writers can then approach a beta reader via the site with their story details, and beta readers can accept or decline projects at their own discretion, putting them in complete control of their workload.

Writers can search our database of beta readers by fandom, story length, genre, relationships and beta strengths to find the perfect match for them. If the fandom they are writing for is not currently listed then writers can recommend it for addition and, in the mean time, contact a general beta reader who is willing and able to look over any form of fictional piece and provide a technical critique.

Perfect Imagination aims to support both writers and beta readers as much as possible, and we will always be available to mediate should any problems arise. We offer a free service, and we are always expanding the site further to better meet the needs of the community as a whole.

Hi - yes, it's still Lent, but it's Sunday, and something inspired me to write this song. It's sung by Severus (aka Michael Griffin) for his son's band's album - at Christopher's request. The marvel is that his dad agrees!

I will link to an mp3 of the tune later, if I can manage it:

Friday Fic Pimp

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Canon Error
The reworked 1981 is up to chapter 11 on my LJ.  A brief description:   Chapter 11:  Welcoming the Prodigal - Part I shows us three returns by Severus Snape:  His return to friendship with Lily Evans after the DADA OWL; his return to Lord Voldemort on the night of Voldemort's return in 1995; and Dumbledore's preparation for Severus'  first meeting with him at Hogwarts in 1981.  This is our most AU chapter to date.  The Voldemort segment also stands on its own (no need to have read prior chapters), and I am begging for comments. ;-)

Yes, I know, it's almost March, but I don't think I got around to mentioning these fics back in December. Anyway, only one of them centers around Christmas, so they should be good reading any time of year. Or disturbing reading, in the case of the first fic...

Title You Could Use a Good Caretaker
Author: [info]bohemianspirit
Type: Fiction (Humor, Slash - unrequited)
Crossover: Harry Potter/One Day at a Time
Characters: Severus Snape/Dwayne Schneider
Rating: PG

Summary: Dwayne Schneider thinks Severus Snape is in need of a good caretaker.

After you fry your eyeballs on that improbable scenario, move on to a more soothing, comforting fic, from my Severus in Duluth AU:

Title: Comfort and Joy
Author: [info]bohemianspirit
Type: Fiction (Gen)
Characters: Severus, OFC
Rating: PG

Summary: Several months into his postwar life in Duluth, Minnesota, Severus has dinner at his flat with a coworker.

And finally, in the "Light Between the Cracks" storyverse with Severus ("Jack") and Dora, a bit of happy-family warmth and peace:

Title: And Glory Shone Around Them
Author: [info]bohemianspirit
Type: Fiction (Gen, AU)
Characters: Severus, Edie, Dora, Jackie (OCs)
Rating: PG

Summary: Sitting in church with his wife and children on Christmas Eve, 1992, Severus muses about his life, his work, and his family.

We have a monthly challenge called Snape and love. Go for it!
I've been waiting all week for Friday to arrive so that I could rec this awesome artwork that [info]karasu_hime made for me for the Trading Places challenge on [info]lupin_snape! (Trading Places is a challenge where writers create a story based on an artist's work, and the artists create artwork for a writer's story.)

Title: Summer Vacation
Artist: [info]karasu_hime
Rating: G
Pairing: Snape/Lupin
Summary: It was absolutely fun to reread my favorite parts as I looked for scenes.

New community

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Corset
Hey everyone! Hopefully this is an appropriate post (I double-checked the user info, and it seems that it's okay). I'd like to invite everyone, particularly avid fic readers and new/newish authors to a new community:

http://community.livejournal.com/the_new_library/

This is a community for recommending new(ish)/underappreciated authors and their work. Although we are not affiliated with any specific ship or genre, I anticipate having a lot of Snape fictions being recced there (in fact, there are already three listed for you to check out!)

I'd love for you all to join and share the treasures of your trawling through archives! I will also be running awards around summertime, and your votes and nominations will be vital then!

Thanks Snape-fans! :-D

So here it is in all its glory the completed fic........enjoy :)

Hi :) New here! I thought I'd post something for the Valentine's Fest.

Title: Showing His Appreciation
Pairing: Severus/Charity Burbage
Timeline: Very early during Half Blood - Prince
Rating: G
Challenge: Snapedom Valentine’s Fest - Prompt: Flowers
Summary : Severus did actually give someone a Valentine’s gift once.
Word Count: 200 words
Disclaimer: The Harry Potter books and characters belong to JK Rowling. No copyright infringement is intended.

In the words of the Eagles' "Hotel California":

I was thinking to myself,
This could be heaven or this could be hell...

Heh.

Title: Road Trip
Author: [info]bohemianspirit
Type: Short Story, Gen/Humor
Characters: Severus and several OCs, including a wife, two children, and a highway patrol officer
Rating: PG-13 for a bit of language, albeit nothing unusual for a typical family road trip
Prompt: Severus the family man

Summary: Severus, now known as Phoenix and living post-war in Duluth, Minnesota, has a hard time controlling his temper on a road trip to Minneapolis with the kiddies.

Note: This story was written for the [info]snapedom Valentine's Day celebration. Other stories based on this AU include my Scenario #2 for The Great Snape Escape, Comfort and Joy, and Pizza Party.

Road Trip, a.k.a. Have Kids, Will Try Not to Strangle )
O.K. Emerging from Minnesota Winter Hibernation to post a couple of things for Severus on Valentine's Day. ;-)

(And for those of you who commented on recent posts of mine, thanks. I really DO read and appreciate comments, even when I don't get to the library often enough to reply right away.)

My first offering originally came to me during The Birthday Party in January. I'd made an off-the-cuff comment in a thread to the effect of, "But of course, she's Lily Sue!" and that evoked a sudden memory of the song from Grease, "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee," and I said, hey, someone should write a parody to the tune of the "Sandra Dee" song from Grease.

Well, we all know what happens when we say, "Someone should..." :-D

As much as this amused me to write, it really didn't seem like an appropriate thing to give to Severus on his birthday. But it fits the themes of Valentine's Day, in an unrequited teenage puppy-love sort of way, so I'm posting it now.

Go behind the cut and sing along... )
