Snape tries every spell he knows, using all his power. The twisted metal will not budge for him any more than it would for the others.

"You've done your best, Severus," the headmaster laments. "We shall look for another solution..."

"Ask Potter." Snape's mouth twists, but his jaw is set.

Soon the boy appears, ridiculous in his nightclothes. "Professor Snape suggested that we let you try," says Dumbledore serenely.

Potter shoots Snape a look, then concentrates. The metal dissolves and reshapes itself as he bends the world to his will.

In defeating Voldemort, will they create something even more dangerous?

I imagine dark Harry could have emerged, had he lived a bit longer with the Dursleys and had he ended up in Slytherin and hung out with people who choose power over all else. Thanks!

The Sorting is really the key to all of this in my mind. JKR has clearly set him up as a forgiving sort with a lot of love in the heart. So a bit longer with the Dursleys might have made him darker, but JKR seems to express a lack of impact on anything other than his ability to sneak about quietly and dislike summer hols. I think in the real world, you would be 100% correct, but in HP canon, she seems to write that off (ha ha).

But the Sorting is a choice. Only his second or third real choice as a wizard. The first, in my mind, being Ron over Draco, though one might think it is really either his annoyance with Malfoy's attitude at Madame Malkins or his decision to buy snacks for Ron. He has heard bad things about Slytherin from Hagrid and Ron and JKR proves Harry to be quite impressionable given the whole "Not Slytherin, Not Slytherin!" thing, but the hat essentially says, I'll make you great and powerful, effectively offering revenge against the Dursleys (perhaps this further supports my point about them, above) and Harry says, "No thanks, I'd rather follow my prejudices and go with that gangly red head I seem to like.

From there on it's up hill until he gets a few hormones and TURNS INTO POTTER_MOUTH!!!!!!! :)

Scary thought. The weapon they shaped turning on the makers. This is such a hard hitting drabble, very much enjoyed.
