---------------
Slytherin, A History

Don’t get me wrong.
This will not be one of those sappy “tell all” books where in the end the reader find the subject matter endearing.
This book will not show you the softer side of my house but the human side, with all its glory and its demons. Stories of compassion are rare and few in between. No, I and others worked on this to show the truth. To move the light that has been shed on Slytherin, to show you what lurks in the shadows; to go beyond the dungeons.

Regard,
The Half Blood Prince.

"M-May I borrow a book?"

The boy's voice is far too tremulous. Perhaps he is more scarred by the Dark Lord than I'd hoped?

I clear my throat and do not look up from the essays I am marking. "Of course." I wave impatiently toward the shelves.

He slides one free but does not leave. I glance up. My book on love potions?

"Not to be used on the weak or underage," I warn.

"Definitely not," he quietly agrees.

Later I rise and find my flesh restless, in need of release.

Understanding dawns when I find him in my bed.

Title: Obsession

Challenge: Book (Non Fiction)
Characters: Severus, Hermione

Hermione could have screamed.

As soon as Severus set foot out of his lab these days, he reached for the book, a pencil, and nothing in the world mattered to him anymore. Gone were the talks about academic or mundane matters alike, and the evenings cuddling in front of the fireplace (her treacherous mind reminded her that it had happened six times tops in the last three years anyway).

Granted, it gave her plenty of time to read, but still, she couldn't help wishing her mother had found something else to gift Severus with than 1001 Wicked Sudokus last Christmas.

Characters: Severus Snape/Remus Lupin

Severus hated book signings – in fact he loathed them with a passion he had hitherto reserved for Dark Lords and well-meaning Gryffindors. However, his agent was adamant that they were necessary to ensure that The Nature of The Beast received as wide a readership as it deserved.

However, one dreary Monday at Flourish & Blotts his forbearance was rewarded. A familiar, scarred face regarded him with interest.

“You know, I thought your chapter arguing for the reintegration of werewolves into wizarding society was inspired.”

“Indeed?” Severus replied politely. “No other comments?”

Lupin grinned. “Perhaps we could discuss them over dinner?”

Challenge: #250 Nonfiction

The thing he’d missed most about Hogwarts was the food service.

The skills Mother had passed on had been basic at best and bangers and mash became tiresome quickly.

He found the book at a charity shop; it was worn but mostly intact, “Mastering the Art of French Cooking”.

He studied and practiced as best he could with limited resources. He got a job as a kitchen assistant, advancing to commis, line cook, sous-chef and finally chef de cuisine.

Cooking sang in his blood like potions-making once had.

He even had his own book, “French Cooking for the Complete Dunderhead”.

Harry slammed the manuscript down, rattling the teacups. "I won't print this!"

Snape raised one superior eyebrow. "No? I understood that you wished me to write my memoirs, in order to counteract the Skeeter cow's unauthorised idiocy. I understood that you'd signed a contract promising to print said memoirs at your own expense, without edits."

Harry glared. "You named it Severus Snape and the Scar-Headed Twit! You're taking advantage of me!"

Snape's smirk made Harry long to wring his skinny neck. "I am a Slytherin," he pointed out. "You could hardly expect me to refuse such—ah—generous terms."

(Remember: drabble prompt posts now appear on livejournal and insanejournal)

Challenge #250: Books (Non-Fiction) In 2006, we had a challenge that focused on Fiction. This week, the challenge is on Non-Fiction. Imagine a work of non-fiction (from either the Muggle world or the Wizarding world) that Snape - as a child or an adult - might have read, and think about what his reaction might have been. As an interesting alternative, write a drabble focusing on a non-fiction book (or series of books?) that Snape might have authored.

(Note: extra points if you write a second related drabble which "quotes" 100 words from a book Snape wrote)

“Lupin, what is this drivel?”

Lupin looked in from the kitchen.

“Good heavens, Sesame Street! It’s an American children’s show. Quite revolutionary when it started; it was the first truly educational children’s program, teaching letters and numbers.”

“With monsters as teachers?”

“That’s a Muppet, Severus, a kind of puppet. That particular one is Zoë.”

“Should I be worried that you know that?”

Lupin snapped a towel at him.

“My nephew enjoyed the program. I sometimes watched it with him.”

“She’s wrong. Everyone knows that ‘S’ is for snake.

“You’re wrong too; ‘S’ is for Sexy Slytherin Severus Snape.”

Severus smirked.

Challenge: #248 The Sun, the Moon and the Stars
Characters: Severus/Remus
Word Count: 100

The first time Remus saw Severus’ Boggart he'd had to stifle a bark of incredulous laughter. Such a reaction would have been fatal to their new relationship at best and to himself at worst.

The weird, horrific creature was nothing like the sturdy wolf that was the result of his monthly agony. If that was how Severus saw him, how much greater was his bravery in reaching out to Remus after the War.

This Boggart, years later, was different. It was the full moon, like Remus’.

He had not thought it possible to fall deeper in love, but he did.
