-I'm curious about how liberal Smith is. I don't like anyone's political views being shoved down my throat, so I'm curious as to whether a lot of people have a voice or if there is only one accepted leaning. There are quite a few liberal schools where both students and professors claim to encourage open mindedness, but in reality that stands as long as you say what they like to hear.
-How accepting are students of other religions? Many schools have an interfaith club, so that may not be an indicator of how the student body reacts to students' devoutness.
-How do you think the Smith bubble affects you?
-Also, is there anything you weren't expecting and bam! you got hit with it? Like how laid back and funny students are or something.
I can't visit for personal reasons, but I will try to by the end of the year. In the meantime, thanks to anyone who helps. |

Yup, it's me again. I actually ended up getting accepted to Smith and now would be interested in knowing more about theatre at Smith since I'm leaning towards theatre minor/am interested in getting involved in college. I'd specifically like to know a bit more about the what the theatre program at Smith is like and also the Midnite Theatre and the 5 College Theatre departments consortium. Any comments/opinions would be great. Thanks! |

Sorry if you hate these "Do you think I could get in???" posts, but I could use some honesty....
I'm currently a senior in high school and applied to Smith College RD for fall 2008. My GPA is 3.7 (uw) out of 4.0. I'm a student in a democratic school-within-a-school program at my high school that values self-directed learning, lots of student/teacher interaction etc. and two of my teachers from the program sent recc letters. I am/want to be an activist, very likely a queer activist, so I want to create a program around government, community organizing, and social change through Smith's government department. I'm on the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network of Boston's (GLSEN Boston) Board of Directors where I'm the clerk, a programming committee member (organizing our annual programs/events) and a strategic partnerships committee member. I'm on GLSEN's National Student Leadership Team of 47 students in 30 states, and I've the student leader of my GSA for two years which I've organized several events through as well. I'm a teaching assistant at my synagogue's preschool program and have worked as a camp counselor for 4-6 year olds the past three summers. I've also pursued photo and drama in high school, doing independant study in photo (but I didn't have time to do it this year :-( and acting or producing several shows (including acting in a state festival finalist show). I had a really good interview with an alum in my area where I talked a lot about GLSEN, theatre, and why I wanted to attend Smith (I said the idea of a university that specifically serves to further women and where there's no set definition of how a woman "should" think and act was empowering to me, that it has an affirming enviornment for queer-identified women such as myself and seemed to have the academic resources I was looking for).
But what's bringing me down are test scores: I retook the SATs this October and my highest scores are 610/550/700. My SAT subject tests are 730 in US History and 600 in Literature. The second thing that's bringing me down is whether I can afford this school: my parents make a solid salary together, but we have almost no savings or assets and my twin sister is going to college next year as well. My FEC is about $7,000 according to the FAFSA, but I know on the CSS/PROFILE it's higher because of the value of our house (we live in an attractive suburb in a TINY apartment whose value has more than doubled after my parents purchased it 20 years ago but they're still paying off the morgage). I'm not expecting a full ride at Smith and well aware we'll be in debt, but I have goal of getting enough aid to knock the price of a private college to $15-18,000, the price of the state school I'm applying to. What have people's experience with financial aid been at Smith College in terms of whether their financial needs were met or not? An admissions rep visited Smith and stressed how they don't take the government's estimates blindly and look at everyone who is need of aid more individually and my interviewer talked of her own positive experiences with aid but clearly they both want to make Smith look attractive so of course I'm sure whether to trust what they say. |

Hello all!
i've read through a few of the entries, and it seems a lot of high school seniors and juniors have posted a lot of questions, but i havent seen much about transfer students. right now i attend a women's college in VA so going to another single sex college would be no problem for me. and while i DO worry about getting into smith, only the admissions office can tell if i'm the right person for that school or not.
so basically i was interested in learning if there were any programs or clubs designed to help transfer students get adjusted to life at smith. i'm very curious about life outside of campus, like the town relations, because i go to a school where life without a car is very difficult. it's not a situation i want to repeat, so i'm wondering what sorts of things you do on the weekends or even on week nights.
i'd ask about the academics, but i'm assuming they're not on the harder side, though not suicide worthy. as with most schools, i assume that there are great faculty and there are lousy ones.
what's the food like on campus? is the campus very big, does it take more than 15 minutes to get to class?
i live in NY, so i'm kinda used to the winter/snow, but from the pictures it seems that ma gets 100x snow than we do. how do most people, especially those not from the NE, handle the winter weather? do classes ever get cancelled?
sorry if im asking so much at once, i'm just really curious. if you would like to contact me personally, i could give you my e-mail, or we can exchange facebooks (if you have one).
thanks a lot!!!

Hello! I'm currently a junior in high school, and I'm planning on visiting Smith this coming spring (March 25th, to be exact). I'm pretty sure classes are in session that day, and I want to sit in on one if possible, but I'm not sure what would be a good class to check out. Do any of you have any suggestions of good classes to visit -- ones with interesting subjects, really good professors, or anything else I should check out? Thanks! |

I was wondering if you guys would be willing to take a few pictures of your favorite spots around the campus? Buildings, trees, ponds and the such, considering I probably won't get a chance to actually visit Smith. |

I just wanted to thank everyone that gave me advice and encouragement.
I finally was able to make an appointment with an alum in my area, so I will be meeting with her on Saturday afternoon.
Any advice for the interview: things I should bring, mention, emphasize, etc.? |

I just returned to Phoenix today, after visiting Smith and the Boston area for a few days. I know that Smith is the school for me, and I will be applying very soon. My concern is that the way some of the staff have conveyed the school to me is that of utmost perfection. It would seem that no student at Smith ever receives anything lower than a B minus, and in my mind that just can't be possible. I know that the women at Smith are incredibly brilliant, which is why I intend on going to school there, but I fear that a few bad marks on my transcript from previous years will not permit me to be accepted. I know this may seem a tad ridiculous, but I believe I have a right to be concerned, considering my future in college is at stake. I have an interview with an alum coming up soon, and I plan on explaining the reasons for my less then perfect grades, but I'm still wondering if that will be enough to redeem me.
Surely Smith is understanding to human error...is it not? |

I just wanted to properly follow through with my previous post. :)
( Cake for some helpful people! )
It turns out that I will be visiting and having an overnight on October 28th/29th (I believe), so now I'm just slogging through the beginning of my last year, waiting until I can submit applications. I still plan on applying ED unless the visit manages to drastically change my mind. ;)
I am a bit concerned, however, that I may appear to be slacking my senior year. Due to scheduling issues and a pathetic lack of AP/advanced/honors courses at my school, I only get to take two APs (Biology and Lit&Comp) and an accelerated French IV class first semester in addition to two music classes (choir and orchestra) and three graduation requirements (government, consumer education, P.E.-- second semester will have sociology, humanities and literature, and P.E.). I had been hoping to take at least three, but AP Government and AP Economics didn't work with my schedule. This brings me to a grand total of a measly four APs in all, with additional honors and accelerated ones tossed in as well. Is this going to look bad, or am I probably all right? I'm also pretty busy with theater/opera productions and quite a few leadership positions, etc..., so I don't feel like I'm slacking too horribly much even though it may look like it.
Also-- does anyone know anything about the East Asian Studies or Comparative Literature majors? Those and French are what I'm thinking most strongly about as of now. :)
Opinions? Quibbles? Advice to become a hermit and stop spamming this community? ♥ |

Sooo...
I just realized that I have a lot more wiggle-room in my last two years at Smith (as three of my six remaining major courses are piddly one-credits). I'd super love to continue in the French direction, but I can find no information on a minor, just the major. Is it possible to minor in French? Have any of you attempted it? Do tell!!
Oh, and welcome back, ladies :)

Dear LJ community,
I am a senior at an overly competitive private catholic school in NH and no, it isn't any fun at all. Over the past 6 months or so, I have fallen in love with, and got my heart absolutely set on Smith. Now, I plan on applying ED, as Smith is really the only school I've seen so far that I'm actually interested in. I do realize that I'm probably just setting myself up for disapointment. But anyway, a few questions... I've heard that Smith considers grades more than standardized testing scores? How important are grades and scores as opposed to say, me as a person (activities, interests, et cetera)? My gpa is a measly 3.5, which, isn't horrible at my school considering the valedictorian usually has something like a 4.3, but it's nothing impressive. I feel like my SAT/ACT/AP scores make up for that. I took the SAT once and got 2000 (720/580/700) maybe i'll take it again. I should decide soon. the ACT I also took once. got a 30 and I don't really know what that means. and I got 5s on AP bio and english lang/comp. okay. done with numbers... I am also ridiculously over involved in extracurriculars to the point where I feel that colleges will think I'm just trying to pad my resume. Honestly, I just need to be busy. If something interests me and needs to be done, I need to be doing it. I hope Smith understands that. which brings me to my next question... I'm planning on having an interview soon. What do I wear? What should I bring? What kind of questions should I expect/ what kind of questions should I be asking?
hm. I'm probably forgetting something, but maybe that's for the best because I realize this entire post is at least somewhat obnoxious. Is there anything else anyone wants to tell me? I'm interested in..well, lots of things. Literature, art, history.. I've been thinking about American Studies quite a bit recently. If anyone has anything to say about any of those programs. or any programs for that matter I'd greatly appreciate it.
thank you x10 -whitney. |

I just want to know if any of you guys think I have a chance at getting into Smith, and you're advice on how to do it.
I'm going to be a Junior next year and I'm taking all honors courses and 2 AP classes. I don't know what my unweighted GPA is, but my weighted is 4.425. I'm in the top ten percent of my class 75/930something. I haven't taken the SAT yet, but my PSAT was 1730 (I'm going to study so hard. And probably take it more than once. :DD). But, what really worries me is my extra curriculars. The only thing that I've done outside of school that I can really put on an app. is my volunteering. I was a Candy Striper (I even wore that horrible dress. It was painfully embarrassing) for a little over a year. I haven't done really anything at my school because I'm not a) religious, b) good at sports or c) artsy. My passion is reading. I love love love to read. I'm actually planning on volunteering at my local library. That and joining German club (I've become obsessed with Germany after visiting) and then making a foreign film club with my friend. But, since I really haven't done anything at school or outside before this, I'm scared that what I am doing isn't enough.
From the moment I heard of Smith, I've become enamored with it! But, I'm just really worried I'm not going to be able to make it in.
I'd love to hear your opinions and advice. Thanks! |

Hey, ladies, hope your summers are coming to a pleasant close.
I was just wondering if any of you, by any chance, know of a way to get from Hanover, NH back to Pioneer Valley. The stupid Greyhound runs a bus out there but not back, and I need a reliable way to make the entire trip as my boyfriend attends Dartmouth.
Thanks!

Hi, I was just wondering how strong the History department is. Any comments about the professors and classes would be great.
I'm also wondering about the Study Abroad program, as in, do your Smith fees cover it or do you have to pay more? And are all credits transferrable.
Thanks in advance! |

Hey all! So far I have Smith as my top college to apply to this fall. I was just wondering if applying Early Decision would help my chances of being accepted-- I assume so, but it's always nice to check. Also, since I live in Illinois and have been traveling a lot this summer already (France, Australia, and New Zealand-- it was sort of amazing), there's no time/money as of now for me to actually visit the campus like I would love to do. I'm not sure how highly that would be considered when my application is turned in, since I know it helps tilt the charts a bit at some schools. I do plan to interview with a local rep, though.
I would possibly try to mail you a cake if you answer any of these badly phrased questions. :)

Has anyone here ever dealt with Rentnoho.com (realtors)? or the Hampshire Property Management company? incoming freshman here...
okay, well i just got a letter from Smith admissions office that said due to my decline in grades on my final transcript in high school, i must take steps to regain my academic momentum, and that when i arrive on campu, i must schedule an appointment with Tom Riddell, Dean of the First-Year Class.
If anyone has been in this situation, can anyone please tell me what this means and what will happen to me? will i be barred from taking certain classes, extracurriculars, etc? And what exactly is going to happen at and after this appointment with the dean?
Thanks so much. |
