My own theory...
...about last night's episode.

I might be stating the obvious here, but I wanted to voice my own thoughts about the scene in which Clark read off all the names on Bart's IDs. I felt this scene was the director/writers' way of not only paying homage to the many incarnations of The Flash, but also letting the comic-fan audience know that the Smallville Flash is a unique character that combines elements from all the comic characters into a single, new character that best fits into the Smallville universe. Much like they've changed Clark quite a bit to fit their own interpretation of the Superman mythos, they changed the Flash, too.

I don't think he's "really" Impulse, and I think the pick-up line to Chloe was meant to be just a pick up line, in the context of the scene, put there as an in-joke for the comic-fan audience. I don't think the character is actually supposed to be from the future in the Smallville universe.

Did anyone else read those scenes this way?

For the record, I *adored* the Smallville's Flash, and really enjoyed last night's episode quite a bit. :-) In general, I really love the show's interpretations of the comic characters. I also thought the special effects were especially good.

My fiance, being a huge comic book fan, loved last night's episode. It's so cute to watch him watching Smallville. His eyes just glow when there's good special effects - like yesterdays. Only thing he didnt like was that maybe it shouldnt have looked like fire as he ran.. but more like lightning...

I didn't think it looked like fire when he ran, I think it was just red because his clothes were red. :)

I've read all the comics from the last ten years, and I don't think they have changed Clark at ALL from the comics. He's one of the characters they've done perfectly. He's exactly like he is in the comics. :)

I think it doesn't really matter if he is or not. In the context of Smallville, I don't imagine we'll ever find out and it's not central to the story. So for those of us who want it to be the "real" Bart Allen it can be, and for others it doesn't have to be.

I think that's a great way of thinking about Bart in Smallville and that's exactly how I approach the show as well. It's great that the writers were able to nod to the fans and include so many references and themes, especially the classic race between Superman and The Flash at the end. Personally the episode sent shivers down my spine. It's also a testament to the writers that the show wasn't repetitious, given that we've already seen another character with super speed. It was great to see Bart run across the water.

That was awesome.....and it looks like the flash is way faster than Clark. I thought in the comics Superman and Flash did a race around the world to see who was faster and they tied. Do you remember that one?

I didn't read that issue...shamefully, I stopped reading the comics several years ago. I used to be a religious reader before then, but I've fallen off the wagon - something I intend to change.

I think the Flash won the race by a nose...

And I agree with your take on the "I'm from the future" line. It made me laugh out loud, as a shout-out to the Impulse fans, but I think that it was a pickup line, not a statement of fact.

I guess it wouldn't matter....if it came down to it the flash is fast but can he out run heat vision?

Yes he can. Depends on which Flash you're talking about, but some have gone past the speed of light, I believe.

Flash is faster than Clark.

If you say so......plus I guess the flash has no problems with Kryptonite so you might say that he could take down Superman without any troubles. Just a little pocketfull...in case he gets out of hand.

No, I wouldn't say he could take Clark *down* without trouble. Clark's still far stronger and resistant to damage. Flash is just faster, that's all.

They always tied until recently. Wally West can beat the pants of Superman with the speed force.

I am not 100% up on my Flash mythology and most of what I know I get from JLA comic books, but an introduction to the speed force can be found here: http://www.hyperborea.org/flash/force.html

I especially liked that at the end while they were racing. Clark was going all out and Bart was just messing around, running backwards and all. Then Bart really took off leaving Clark in the dust. Pretty cool.

Maybe Clark hasn't fully developed in his super-hero puberty and isn't completly done developing his speed yet?

I dunno about that. Maybe so.....he hasn't figured out he can fly yet....nor has he tapped his true powers yet.

That's what keeps the show interesting though, I suppose.....I would like to see him flying though.

Even when Clark can fly, I'm pretty sure the Flash can still outrun him. It depends on who's writing the comic, but it's generally accepted throughout the DCU that no one is faster than Flash, not even a fully developed and fully powered Superman.

Depends on which Flash out of the four that you're talking about, but yeah. Flash wins the race.

I think they had planned that for a season or two ago, but dropped it because WB would let them because of the upcoming "Batman Begins" movie.

The Flash and Superman did race in the comics, but they tied...there was this whole elaborate "betting" scheme, where both were kidnapped, but eventually they both escaped and hit the finish line at the exact same moment

the flash could be able to hurt superman. he moves so fast that he can vibrate through matter and for a while there he was losing control and would vibrate through things and they would explode.
