I'm not too sure this fits the theme, I may have missed the hints. What I did notice was too much repetition in you beginning. Again you tell the story rather than show it, which is fine if its your style, but when you play on emotions like concern and helplessness that I see in this story, you want actions and words in your story. Otherwise, write this in first person, where actions aren't as needed.
