Her face was a bit too chubby, her fat cheeks a little too pale. Her curls were dark red, and her eyes, bright and clear, almost white in the light. Her mouth made strange, incoherent squeaks and cries, and whenever it opened all that would be seen was pink.

Floritiuse thought the creature was rather strange. It was extremely small, and fragile-looking, as if dropping it would shatter it. She said out loud that she doubted it was human. Usagi, of course, disagreed.

"Of course it's human!" From where she sat, Usagi laughed as she held it, its gangly arms and legs wrapped up in a pink blanket. "It's my daughter."

The Themisian looked at Usagi, somewhat incredulous. It was true that within the past year that Usagi had announced that she was having a baby. It was also true that after said announcement Usagi got so big and round that her her belly had started to droop down to her legs. It was also true that Usagi, after going to the hospital, had miraculously shrunk back down to a relatively normal size. The alien didn't doubt any of that.

No, Floritiuse wasn't an idiot. She knew that Usagi had grown her baby in her stomach (though it was extremely strange to her) or had given birth to it through her buttocks (and that was even stranger). In fact, Floritiuse wasn't doubting that Usagi had a baby, or that the baby was human, even though she said it.

On the other hand, Floritiuse was a little more than worried that Usagi asked her to come see her. Usually, if someone had a baby, the only reason they would invite someone was to either get a present or have them hold the baby. And Usagi made clear that she had enough presents to choke a horse.

"Heheh." The baby suddenly twitched, and Usagi giggled again. "Chibi, you like to yawn, don't you, Chibi. Yes you doo...."

Floritiuse could only grimace as the human cooed. Unlike Usagi, who had an unconscious love for children, Floritiuse didn't have a single maternal bone in her body, and that was a fact. After all, she could not have children herself; she was told many times that sailors didn't have babies. And of course she didn't care too much for babies to begin with, especially certain human ones that cried and cried for no apparent reason whatsoever - except, of course, the fact that a certain giant green monster was walking by them.

She's insane, the alien thought. I despise children. So annoying and demanding...!

So the ritual of holding the baby terrified her to no end. The baby hadn't seen her yet, which had been a blessing. It was only a matter of time, however, before the dreaded moment came, and then...

"Oh!" It came. "I need to go to the bathroom. Here, Use-chan, you can hold the baby now."

Usagi approached Floritiuse, and immediately saw the wide-eyed fear. Instantly, she took a step back, holding the baby to her chest.

"Use-chan?"
"Um...." The monster gulped. "I'm...I'm not good with babies."
"Well, I'll only be gone for a minute. It's ok."
"Um...." The monster began to shake. "Well...."
"Here you go!"

Before Floritiuse knew it, the baby was suddenly slipped into one of her tentacles, and Usagi was gone. Squeaking, Floritiuse nearly dropped the thing, so terrified she was of the baby. Fortunately, another one of her tentacles unconsciously came to the rescueand patted the baby on the bottom, stopping the fall before it started.

Don't....wake...up. Very slowly, Floritiuse brought the baby up and put all of her tentacles underneath it, staring at it like a twelve-headed monkey. Don't....don't wake up. Please please PLEASE don't wake up-

Suddenly, the eyes opened, and they were staring right at her. There was utter silence as the alien and the baby looked at one another, neither saying anything, neither moving. Floritiuse waited, waited for the moment the instinct would kick in, and the baby would cry so hard that the police would be called. Waited for the urge to smack the baby silent so it would leave her, the heartless, childless alien, alone. It wouldn't have been the first time for any of it.

Finally, the reaction came.

Chibi-Usa stared at the funny green thing with the two yellow beads for two minutes, somewhat unfazed, before she flapped her gloved hands, gave a tired squeak and closed her eyes, snuggling into the strangely soft hands that were holding her. From her buttocks came the soft expellation of breast milk induced gas. It was the softest bed she'd ever had.

It wasn't quite the greeting Floritiuse expected. Nevertheless, she could breathe. It was something else.

"Right, I'm back..."

Usagi had taken several more minutes that she had expected, having run into her doctor who insisted on blood tests within the hour. Hurrying back to the room, Usagi remember the words of some of the sailors - Floritiuse's past regarding childbearing, Floritiuse's opinions on children, and so on - most of which she had dismissed.

Of course, the nagging feeling persisted. She hadn't heard a commotion, but she was still worried, and despite her trust in Floritiuse, she knew better than to leave her baby with the alien completely unattended. Indeed, she had a thought to put the baby into the nursery before the alien panicked.

All of her fears melted away as she came back into the room and saw the sight. There they were in the chair, the alien and the baby nestled on her chest, sleeping together like they'd known and trusted each other for ages. A little snore came from Floritiuse's mouth, but neither of them woke up.

Nor did they wake up as Usagi, a relieved smile on her face, quietly left the room once more, to give the two new friends some privacy. After all, if it was any indication, they were going to spend a lot of time together in the future.

------------

I love kids, Floritiuse thought just before she had drifted asleep.
