The Lost Gardens of Apollo

I'm not a believer in the possibility of Second Life romance. Now, the possibility of avies getting off with awkward animations and marrying people they've never met in real life is certain, as it happens all the time here, but the sweeping, lolling, butterfly-guts feeling of romantic moments tend to get lost in the buttons, typing, and crashes. However, one of the few spots where honest to golly romance may by some slip of chance occur is the lovely Lost Gardens of Apollo.

It's a vacation week plus family holidays for me, which is why you haven't seen any postings to Something eLse from me. I do have a mega entry on Caledon coming up once I'm back to my usual routine, though, and I am monitoring for new submissions each day to moderate-rubber-stamp them. Stay tuned!

Admin: Now Open For Submissions!

I've decided to set up the community for submissions. Essentially, anybody who's a member of the community can now write up a guide and submit it -- it will have to be signed off on by a moderator (currently just me) for style and content.

I've added a template to our introductory post which you can use as a guide. You don't have to include photos as I am, but I'd like new entries to follow the same pattern, and to be of locations that fit the mission statement -- places that present something else to SL tourists other than the usuals.

I'll keep an eye on the moderation queue and try to get your entries up in a prompt manner. I'm working on some more of my own, as well; Caledon's up next, and I've been touring it extensively to get some juicy photos. :)

Feel free to start spreading word-of-mouth style to other friends of yours in SL... I think we have enough entries up now to officially "open." Woohoo! Enjoy. Let me know if you have any questions.

Freebie Warehouse / Gnubie Store

Is SL a remarkable experiment into online creativity and social networking, or is it a massive cash grab for tacky stripperwear? ...well, okay, it's technically both. But that means that for every pair of pants someone expects you to fork over L$300 for, someone else is willing to give you a pair for L$0. Is it the same level of quality? Sometimes yes, sometimes no... sometimes, it's even better. And today, we're going to profile two places you walk home from with a massive haul without paying a plug nickel for it...

Hunter High

It's not easy, being a teenager. There's boys, girls, sports, social misfits, peer pressure, gangs, drugs, sex, goths, punks, and oh yes, homework. It's a hotbed for action, drama, mystery, and cheesy after school morality plays. And it's also got a home in Second Life in the form of Hunter High.

Koreshan Pointe

Tucked away in a corner of Second Life is an amusement park that's seen better days... and proof that you can achieve an organic, creative, free-flowing design using something other than smooth plastic prims if you've got enough imagination and talent... so, fire up the wacky circus music and get your E-ticket, it's Koreshan Pointe!

Welcome to Something eLse! ...so what are you reading, exactly?

If you fly around Second Life and track what places you hover over, you'll find that most of the time, you'll be coming across strip clubs, escort services, casinos, shops. Over and over, all over.

There are thousands of these establishments across Second Life, more than you could possibly need. While they do serve a purpose... for people who are looking for something unusual, something unique, Second Life can difficult to get into. Fortunately, there is this blog, which will arm you with a few neat landmarks you can explore when you're in the mood for new experiences.

Members of Something eLse share locations of interest that move beyond those basics. We're not saying you won't see a slot machine or a vendor or sexy people, but the places we list here offer a variety of other experiences as well. You might find themed areas with impressive artistic design... shops with unusual goods and gadgets for sale... roleplaying havens for various fandoms... or social spots of unique flavor.

As of 12/13, this tourist's guide blog is a moderated community. If you'd like to write up a guide in the same style as previous ones and post it, feel free; it'll then wait in a queue for a moderator to examine and make sure it conforms to Something eLse's style and presents a location that fits under Something eLse's mission of finding alternative locales.

The Something eLse Template is behind this lj-cut... )

Above all, enjoy your time in Second Life, and I hope this community's reviews help you enjoy it even more!
