I was scrolling through the Urban Sketchers blog and was intrigued by this particular woman:

Pretty ballsy drawing, I think.

Cheers,

Emmanuel Guibert's technique of drawing with water and then adding a drop of ink. Cool stuff. I'm reading Alan's War right now and it's well worth it.

Schlock Mercenary book launch in downtown SLC this Saturday [May. 19th, 2009|08:00 am]

howardtayler
Hey, SLComix people!

I still haven't met most of you in person, which is a shame since I'm only 40 miles south. But I'm coming north this weekend, and throwing an open-to-the-public party, so let's remedy the "haven't met yet" thing.

I'm taking over the Cottonwood I room at the Radisson on 215W South Temple from 4:00pm to 6:00pm this Saturday, May 23rd. It's the Con Suite for the CONduit SF/F convention, but convention membership is NOT required for this event. Come as you are! Bring a friend! I'll be signing, sketching, and talking to friends, fans, and peers. There will be drawings (the no-purchase-necessary, raffle-ish kind), free food and drink, and some of the nerdiest company you can ask for.

I'm launching The Scrapyard of Insufferable Arrogance, which is arriving in my driveway on 11 pallets this afternoon at 2:00pm. If you've got a bit of professional curiousity, by all means stop by and see what's up. I'm happy to talk about how this business works, and offer pointers to aspiring self-publishers.

If you're on Facebook there's a Facebook version of the event here.

I hope to see you there, and FINALLY MEET YOU FOLKS!

Free Comic Book Day [Apr. 29th, 2009|07:39 am]

So I just remembered this years Free Comic Book Day occurs this Saturday. If any of you were thinking of dropping by Night Flight maybe we could plan on meeting there. I really want to pick up that Nancy/Melvin Monster book!

Japanese comics thinking [Apr. 28th, 2009|08:22 am]

huah
Long time no see, unless you count running into [info]spaceblues at Ignite last month, and borrowing a really bizarre manga series from [info]dfury ... did people actually go to Stumptown this year?

Ran across (via @radiomaru from Chris Butcher's blog) this interesting translated blog post on the differences of the comics styles of Tezuka and Miyazaki...
http://2chan.us/wordpress/2009/04/13/japanese-lectureblog-post-translation-the-space-between-anime-and-manga-4-why-is-the-manga-version-of-%E2%80%9Cnausicaa%E2%80%9D-so-hard-to-read-by-takekuma-kentaro/
...which I figured would be up the alley of the folks here.

Tomorrow! [Mar. 25th, 2009|10:38 pm]

huah
Two excellent things happen tomorrow (Thursday, 26 March):
1. Derek Hunter starts his Pirate Club webcomic. (!!!) I don't know about you, but I'm stoked.
2. Ignite Salt Lake 2 hits Brewvies. (FREE. Doors open 6pm, talks start at 7pm.) I'm speaking again, with a metapresentation on powerpoint, and there are LOTS of good talks lined up. And at five (breakneck!) minutes each, if they're not good, they're at the very least entertaining! (And this time, there's beer, for those who care.)

I just got back from Webcomics Weekend, which was a fun time and an excellent experience. 40 webcomics creators converged on a small town in western MA, and 600 fans showed up to hang out with them and buy their work. I'd write more, but I have to rehearse my slides, so hopefully I'll see y'all at Ignite tomorrow and we can catch up.

Meetup this Thursday, Feb 12 [Feb. 8th, 2009|12:46 am]

huah
As discussed last week, slcomix meetup at my place this week!
Thursday, 12 February, 2009, 7pm
Please zing me an e-mail (or LJ message) for the address, and I'll be happy to pass it on...all of y'all are welcome, just don't want to advertise where I live on the public internet.

There will be food! And drawing! And comics, ...although I can't promise The Distinguished Library of Armando. I mean...seriously.

Meetup this week? (and sketches) [Jan. 25th, 2009|11:52 pm]

huah
Armando and I were talking about meeting up this week (26-30 January), and Armando even (tentatively) offered to host it (possibly). Anyone up for a 2009 get-together? Wed? Thursday?

(I think I need to start tracking the LJ posts here, because if there was a meeting last week, I completely missed it.)

Just posted the sketch from Draw Night last week, and a few others, over on [info]huah.

So what day works for you all?

Stumptown 2009 [Jan. 12th, 2009|08:55 am]

jimmytrout
Hi friends,

Sorry it's been so long since I saw or talked to anyone! I had a pretty distracted Fall, I guess. Nonetheless, I'd love to get together sometime soon, if possible! I miss talkin' comics and I still have some of your books/mags, Robert.

Also, I just wanted to let all y'all know that Stumptown registration is now open. The festival is going to be April 18 & 19. I'm definitely going to get a table again, and if anyone is interested in getting in on that hot, geeky action, let me know.

Yours,

Jeff

webcomicsnation [Dec. 15th, 2008|07:29 pm]

Hey all,
I need some help/advice whatever...I am trying to post my mini-comic pages on webcomicsnation but the images fill the screen, way too big to be normal. I have to scroll to see it all.
Now if I re-scan my artwork at a lower resolution would that solve the image size problem?
thanks,
JJ

Newbie [Dec. 11th, 2008|12:22 am]
dfury
Hi, I'm new. Someone mentioned this livejournal community a while back when I went to the comic convention held at the SLC public library. I thought I would check it out. I am more of a hobbyist at the moment than anything else, mostly because I haven't really buckled down to do anything serious. I figured if I wanted some form of encouragement then maybe local was the way to go :D.

I was visiting a friend in San Fransisco and we decided to take some pictures and compile them into an experimental comic of sorts. The story is a bit strange and I lost a few pages that didn't burn right on the DVD, but I figured I'd share at least a page I liked.

Thursday: IGNITE Salt Lake at The Leo...! [Nov. 12th, 2008|05:22 pm]

huah
If anyone's interested, Thursday (tomorrow) night from 6-10pm at The Leonardo, there's what looks like an awesome event called IGNITE:
http://www.ignitesaltlake.com/
Basically, it's a free mini-conference in which volunteers are given five minutes and 20 slides (auto-advancing every 15 seconds) to talk about any subject that they're passionate about. Presentations run the gamut from promoting your band to working from home to making giant jellyfish out of LEDs and defending yourself against a zombie apocalypse. Someone's even giving a talk on sequential art...so if you don't already have plans (say, to go see Dragonforce, Cowboy Mouth, or the Trans-Siberian Orchestra), hope to see you there!

jason

p.s.--shameless plug: I'm presenting, too, so feel free to come watch me try to speak faster than the speed of light

I didn't see anyone else at the cemetery, so if anyone came, I missed you. I enjoyed myself though. I should do this more often. I need to sketch more and I always enjoy it when I do, but I'm kinda lazy about it. Boo to lazy, I say.

Here are two pictures from the cemetery:

And here, as a little extra, are some sketches I did in S. Utah a little while back:

Anime Banzai this weekend in SLC [Oct. 20th, 2008|09:26 am]

howardtayler
Anybody here coming to Anime Banzai at the Sheraton this Friday and Saturday? I'll be set up in Artist's Alley.

Stop by and say hello! It's been a really good show for artists in the past, even ones (like me) who aren't anime/manga-specific.
