SLANG is the non-standard use of words in a language and sometimes the creation of new words or importation of words from another language. These terms are often particular to a certain subculture - such as LiveJournalers, drug users, the gay community, skateboarders, or musicians. SLANG generally implies playful, informal speech but may also include regional, sexual or cultural terminology.

Post your favourite slang term according to these basic guidelines:

SLANG word: also include in subject line for archiving purposes
Pronunciation: if not obvious
Definition: (noun) define the term
Etymology: origin and historical context if known. information may be included about communities or regions where this term is commonly used.
Usage and/or Example Citation: use the word in a sentence or paragraph to put it into context. you may also include quotes of it's usage as noted in news sources, books etc.

EXAMPLE:

NERD nurd

definition:
A foolish, inept, or unattractive person.

A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.

etymology:
The word nerd, undefined but illustrated, first appeared in 1950 in If I Ran the Zoo by Theodor Seuss Geisel, referring to a small angry humanoid animal.

The inherent nature of slang makes this community potentially not 'work safe' so please view accordingly or use appropriate viewing filters. Moderators, at their discretion, may still request the LJ cut tag be used for some posts. Please use the LJ cut tag for lengthy or image intensive posts.

Slang is often not politically correct. Controversial slang words are acceptable when described in an etymological context. Lively and respectful discussion of such words, within the comments section, is encouraged.

Discussion of posted slang terms is limited to the comments sections. All posts must be comment enabled.

Non English slang is acceptable. As most members are English speaking, please use English in your description of the term.

Off topic posts and any other stupid shit will be deleted without notice.

Drama is boring and all issues will be dealt with depending on the moderator's mood
