'DRESDEN FILES' IN DANGER?

Rescue effort underway to save one of Sci Fi Channel's better shows

THE SKINNY: Fans of the Sci Fi Channel series THE DRESDEN FILES are hoping to save it from extinction, and are calling on other fans to help.

Adapted from the novel series written by Jim Butcher (the ninth volume was released a few months ago), DRESDEN is about  a private investigator (Paul Blackthorne) with a talent for wizardry who helps the Chicago polices solve supernatural crimes.

Reviews have been generally good, with many likening it to a cross between X-FILES and a grown up Harry Potter, and most note the solid acting and intelligent writing. In ratings for the key 18-49 demographic, it has ranked just behind the network’s powerhouse BATTLESTAR GALACTICA – which is especially good when one considers that Sci Fi runs the show in the highly competitive Sunday night time slot. Despite this, the network seems somehow unsupportive, and now that the show is up for renewal for a second season, sources indicate that network execs are leaning toward canceling it. Meanwhile, they’re planning to broadcast some sort of live wrestling show on Tuesday nights.

Well, I guess professional wrestling is more at home on a science fiction & fantasy network than on a sports network. But if that’s an indication of the braintrust in charge of Sci Fi Channel these days, we can be thankful they haven’t turned it into a cross between E! and HSN.

In any case, rather than try to copy the JERICHO campaign and send the network execs teabags or candy canes or something else silly, DRESDEN fans have been taking a mature approach and have launched a letter writing and phone campaign in support of the show. You can get a lot more details
here, and tell ‘em iF sent ya.

Dresden fans campaign to save their show

The Dresden Files - Paul Blackthorne, Valerie CruzWith so many different campaigns going to save shows recently it could almost be a weekly feature here, and here is yet another for you to consider. I bring this one up partly out of a selfish desire to see it succeed, because The Dresden Files has become my second favorite Sci Fi Original, but also because I think it actually has a shot at working.

There is a bunch of helpful info over at the group's main site. They have a letter writing campaign where if you email your letter to Dresden fan Belynda she will print it out and mail it for you, email and phone contact info for Sci Fi, links to a petition, and a host of other options for you to help out.

If you just happened to miss the show when it originally aired you can get all 12 of the episodes through iTunes and there is a nice selection of behind the scenes stuff over at the official Dresden site on scifi.com. The first, hopefully of many, season DVD set is scheduled to be released next month as well.

I think I heard tell of other networks maybe picking it up though. If it gets axed. This might be a little iffy thought I mean, I'm getting a lot of my info from my dad who I somehow convinced to randomly check up on the status of DF...

It's just so bizarre. Why doesn't SciFi come out and just dump it? They sure *have* been "unsupportive" - except for what's on their web site, you'd swear the show had never been on at all. No reruns, no comments. It actually seems like SciFi has no interest in at all.

Yeh, it could be that Lionsgate is putting all this effort in because they are trying to shop it to another source, who would treat it a lot better. I'm just worried now that TM will have gone on to other committments :-(

Off to a two week vacation with no Net access - waaah!

'Bizarre' is my reaction too.

For a while I've been thinking "it looks pretty negative, as though they've already decided to axe it". But if that is the case, then what on earth are they waiting for? What could they possibly gain by dragging things out? The fans are going to become more frustrated, and the critics simply won't be bothered.

However, if there's still some possibility that it will be renewed, picked up by someone, than I guess that's something.

(And wrestling on an SF/Fantasy channel? Does not compute....)

That's exactly what I've been thinking - if they don't want it, why don't they just say so? Grrrr....

Random thoughts since I seem to be having a hard time catching up lately...

SciFi picked up Stargate SG-1 when Showtime decided to stop making it after a few seasons. Since then the channel was acquired by NBC. No doubt they're interested in making a buck and may feel that the audience for science fiction and fantasy will never be sufficient to support the cost of making series TV. Note that SciFi pours money into one-shot made-for-TV movies and has picked up some funky, short-run series from other places to fill in gaps in their schedule. I think of Second Unit and Painkiller Jane as falling into that category.

When I worked at a public TV station as part of the programming team (15 years ago admittedly), we got a lot of programming from Lionheart/BBC productions (*not* Lionsgate). They leased Dr. Who, Blakes 7, and a lot of other British fare. And they charged six ways from Sunday: per ep per airing per whatever. It could very well be that the cost of DF from the distributor is just more than NBC feels they should pay.

Just conjecture and probably by the time I hit post someone else will have put up something more useful. Very very sad.

If The Powers That (: coughs loudly :) Us have made a decision, they haven't shared it yet, so we're keeping our fingers crossed. If anyone reading this doesn't know this fun show, go check out an episode on iTunes. It's like Harry Potter, all grown up into a fully dysfunctional adult: solving crimes and redefining the noir genre because there's a lot of black magic in the Naked City. Okay, it's Chicago. Paul Blackthorne and Terrence Mann did a wonderful job in interpreting/creating their characters, and the show was one of the entertainment highlights of the season -- it really would be a shame to let this one go.

Among our 'mature' activities is to promote the Season 1 DVD which goes on sale next month. And thank everyone who helps us with our efforts. Thank you!

Plus, the subject is unique & interesting - not more of the same cop shows or mind-numbing 'comedy'.
