Zandra Rhodes

A museum quality gown, pure Zandra at her best. Hand screened, "lace mountain" design on silk chiffon, adorned with little floral sequins and beads along the neckline. The ruffle at the neckline is finely pleated, the sleeves are semi sheer and delightfully billowy. She is a (modern) size 10-12 and has two belts, one red as shown and one in the turquoise blue. It is in perfect condition, and is one of the most beautiful Zandras I have ever seen.

Sculpture you can wear

Rhodes has invited 70 of them each to choose a single dress by which they would like to be remembered and to explain why in a label displayed alongside the dress. If they played the game at all (and Saint Laurent, Gucci and Prada didn't), we hear the voices of some of the most talented people on the planet talking about their work in words that give us a remarkable insight into their creative processes.

To take just one example, Christian Lacroix, commenting on his wonderfully crafted, sublimely detailed ball-gown, calls it "a moving sculpture revealing the body by changing its silhouette (which is the aim of couture) and mixing the abstract and the baroque, the architecture and the decor, the minimal and the maximal". If that sounds pretentious, I can only tell you that when you are standing in front of the dress itself, it makes perfect sense.

Zandra Rhodes was born in Kent in the 1940s and was introduced to the world of fashion by her mother, who was a fitter in a Paris fashion house and a teacher at Medway College of Art. Zandra studied first at Medway and then at the Royal College of Art in London. Her major area of study was textile design.

Her early textile fashion designs were considered too outrageous by the traditional British manufacturers, so in 1969, she established her own retail outlet in the fashionable Fulham Road in West London. Zandra's own lifestyle has proved to be as dramatic, glamorous and extroverted as her designs. With her bright green hair (later changed to a spectacular pink and sometimes a radiant red), theatrical makeup and art jewelry, she has stamped her identity on the international world of fashion.

"This shot of the back of the dress shows off the beautiful cowl back. Like all Zandra Rhodes evening gowns, this one of mine is unusual, and always draws a lot of compliments. I haven¹t worn it for several years so now is the time to bring it out again for another 'airing.' "
