And We're Back.
Good news: I'm re-opening the site to the public. We haven't recovered the data that was lost, but the database structure is back to where it needs to be.

There's still a lot of work to be done to get all the features we'd like. All of the code is available via anonymous SVN at svn://svn.midgard.org/sixmoredegrees. Please feel free to check it out and play with it. Feel free to email me patches.

"What happened to the site?"
A series of increasingly problematic events. First, a power outage. After the power was restored, the database server wouldn't boot. In the process of installing a new operating system, the database files were lost. It was then discovered that the backups hadn't actually succeeded in nearly 9 months.
So, we lost not only 9 months of users and data, but also all of the database structural changes that had been made in that time. So, I shut the site down until I could at least recreate the database structure. Well, I finally got around to it, and we're back.

edit: Also: if you happen to come across any problems, please let us know.

Going through the registration process again, I'm again irked by the "first name alone is not enough" quip. Speak for yourself! My first name is globally unique.

YOU have a copy of an authoritative global census? I'd pay a lot for an electronic copy of that... Hell, I could shut the sixmore UI down and just feed that directly into the db.

That would compromise my plans to use it to achieve world domination!

Perhaps both. *tenting fingers*

I tried to "Add Links" to one person, and they didn't seem to show up, but then I tried to "Add Links" to a different person (mostly the same links), and they did all show up immediately (even though at least one of them should have needed confirmation). So I retried adding them to the first person, and again they didn't show up. Dunno if there might be stuff in the database (like pending links from one or the other people that I didn't see) that might explain this, but thought I'd mention it.

Hmmm..

Please email who you were and were not able to link to sixdegrees@midgard.org, and I'll take a look.

Um, never mind. Pilot error. I think maybe I just scrolled down to what I thought was the bottom of the form and hit the bottommost button, without noticing that it was "Remove Relationships" rather than "Add Relationships". Anyway, whatever I did wrong I did it wrong twice, but I just did it right. Sorry, brain is due for an oil change.

Was the recovered data a consistent snapshot? Or are there dangling links to missing users?

Well, it /should/ be consistent. But, the backups /should/ have been working, and the server /should/ have rebooted properly. So.
