Huffington Post mention, in a very strange manner...
HuffPo cites our college! Only... in a fake article. It's almost like we're famous?

At Simon's Rock we have a mix CD exchange (I would go further into detail but to be honest I've never participated) but I have a netbook computer which doesn't have a CD drive unfortunately so I can't make mix CD's, plus buying CDs is expensive!

I'm thinking about starting a community that would be like [info]mixsharebut just for us Rockers.

This way is less expensive (mediashare, megaupload and sendspace accounts are all free!) but not as anonymous as the real exchange.

    would you share one?

I made one yesterday, feel free to join!

Does anyone know who to talk to to contest room charges? At the beginning of the year I painted my room in Pibly a different color. My RD told me that as long as I painted it back at the end of the year I would not get charged. At the end of the year I bought some paint to repaint it. That paint ended up not being the same shade of white but being close enough that I thought it might pass. I did two coats so that if physical plant did have to repaint it it would take them less time (they charge $50/hour).

The long and short of it is that I got charged $400. Now, I think it's absurd that it took physical plant 8 hours to repaint a single that would have only needed one coat of paint. I don't expect to get the charge completely removed, but I would like to talk to someone about it. Do I email physical plant? Someone in the financial office? My RD?

It was not the best choice to paint my room obviously. :\ I'd advise others not to do it.

    Desperately Seeking Work
I just graduated from Simon's Rock and moved to Brooklyn. I'm looking for work. I thought someone here might be able to help me, with a job offer or with tips or advice. If you're also looking for work, you're certainly welcome to post here too.

I graduated summa cum laude, with a high honors thesis and a 3.75. I studied creative writing and literature. I edited Glacial Erratic, wrote for the Llama Ledger, and was a senior representative to community council. I also got a few awards and studied mythology abroad. I worked as a writing tutor in the writing and tutoring center. I've also been an intern at Elsewhere Artist Collaborative, where I greeted guests, helped artists, and did other things the non-profit needed done, and worked for Lewis & Clark Research, a market research company, where I did data entry and mass mailings. I'm particularly interested in work related to books, writing, the arts, or non-profits, but I'd also enjoy office work, retail, and many other things. I'd be happy to send a full resume or references or meet for an interview. Thanks.

    Sallie Mae?
     Hi,

For those of you that have a private or federal loan through Sallie Mae, did they start demanding payments from you after your A.A? I logged on today and found out my loans were in a grace period before deferment, even though I'm staying at the Rock for my B.A.  I called and spoke to a rather confused man who explained that since I went to an A.A granting institution, I have to start paying in October of next year, my Junior year.

I emailed Ann and the man said that if I got some form certified, I could defer my payments every six months until I graduated (So I guess every semester I'll have to defer?).

Has anyone else dealt with them before? I'm not too worried because all of my promissary notes clearly state that I don't have to pay until May 2011, but I need to get my loans for this coming year all arranged and it is just like, failing.

    Message from Mary Marcy
"Dear Family and Friends of Simon's Rock:

Last December, I wrote you regarding the global economic situation and its effect on Bard College at Simon's Rock. In that communication, I outlined the three principles that would guide the management of budgetary decisions as we moved towards the new 2009-2010 academic year. Those basic principles were, first, we must protect the mission of the college and protect our academic core. Second, we must secure recent accomplishments in our major initiatives, including diversifying the campus, developing signature programs, establishing the Win Commons and experiencing success in admissions and enrollment. Third, we must work hard to preserve jobs, so that the people who have worked so hard to build this campus will remain a part of this community.

Those principles have continued to guide us.

Enrollment is strong. Unfortunately, like most colleges across the country our other revenues have taken a hit. We also have to anticipate that charitable giving will be suppressed as our supporters rebuild their portfolios. These factors affect our bottom line and we have taken action to ensure the well-being of the institution, its students and employees.

As forecasts for next year's revenue and expense developed, it became clear that serious cost cutting measures would need to be taken. Without acting, the College faced a deficit in the upcoming fiscal year of approximately $900,000 on a $26 million annual budget. This deficit, while not institution-threatening, is substantial and requires action. It is made more problematic because over 70% of our base budget is dedicated to personnel.

To balance the budget, we have made adjustments in three general areas: 1) 10-15% reductions have been made in institution-wide expenses; 2) strategic reductions have been implemented in targeted areas such as contracted services; and 3) we are trying not to fill vacant positions unless necessary. Through these measures, we have reduced the deficit by half.

Unfortunately, given the nature of higher education, and with so much of the College's budget relating to personnel, elimination of some jobs became unavoidable. I have worked with my colleagues and reviewed staff positions one by one to identify those that could be assumed by others or restructured for efficiency and savings. In the end, 8 of the College's 220 jobs were eliminated, effective as of June 30, 2009. These cuts cross every department and include the administrative leadership. I am also taking a substantial pay cut.

This was a painful decision. Simon's Rock is a small, tight knit community, so layoffs are deeply personal and difficult. Losing valued staff members was always a decision we hoped to avoid, but ultimately one that needed to be made in order to protect the students, the academic core and the quality of education. Unfortunately, the College is not immune from making difficult decisions spurred by the economic conditions plaguing the country and higher education.

While not alone in the world of higher education, we are alone in our unique mission. As difficult as resolving this potential deficit has been, doing so is clearly in the best interests of the institution and the necessary action to secure the health of the College.

Sometimes an organization's strength is judged by its response to harsh realities. We have always been innovators in education and we have always been a strong community. These traits will sustain us, and returning students and the incoming class of 2009 will find us ready to do what we do best."

    Provost and Vice President

Does anyone know who's been laid off?

    Dorm Room Trade?
    Hey Current Students,

This is sort of an odd request, but would anyone want to trade a *Mod single* for a *Hill House single*? I am the one currently in the Mod and would trade you for your single in Hill.

I am in an odd situation and don't think this idea will work out, but I thought I'd give it a shot. Thanks for your consideration... If you're interested, just post a reply here asap!

    Somebody get on this
We need a gallery of pictures of people's Simon's Rock tree tattoos. (Not necessarily on lj, mind you.) Does one exist and my google-fu is just very off this morning?

(I'm contemplating getting one and need inspiration.)

    ravelry group
This one's going out primarily to the alums - though I suppose in theory that current Rockers would also be welcome.
I'm want to start a group on ravelry.com for SRC alums. (Why not? Other schools have ravelry groups.) To start a new group, you need to have at least three peoople to invite, plus the person starting it... currently I've got two. If you're interested in joining, contact me with your ravelry username (if not here, then on ravelry, where I'm melanogaster ), and we'll get this thing going!

    THESIS AAAAAH
Hi everyone! I'm Vincent and I'm a senior this year, and I'm doing my thesis on the grieving process, attitudes towards death and the role of funerals. I have designed a short studying around these ideas and would be much appreciated if you could take it! In the interest of the time it takes to analyze data I'm not accepting anyone under the age of 18.

    Thanks!

    Simon's Rock on NPR
I feel somewhat obligated to put this up, because my day was made infinitely better when I listened to this:
    http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=99056483
I like the little blurb about how it's weird that early college means, you know, going to college.
Also, who was in it? I didn't recognize the beginning voices at all. When did NPR come and tape it? Did they wander around the dining hall and shove microphones in people's face?
Anyway. In case we didn't already attract a demographic of parents (and students) who listen to NPR, this will surely give us exposure.
(Also, Mindy, because I know you have an lj, you are my new hero).

Update from Zoe Witzeling - traveling, aid and future plans
Hi! This is Zoe Witzeling, rocker alum 06-08! I have news for everyone!

1 - I'm coming to the rock in April! Yay! Can't wait to see everyone!
Also, I'm spending the summer volunteering teaching English in rural Costa Rica. Check out my facebook group "Send Zoe to Costa Rica" to learn more about it and to help cover my program costs - I'm 85% paid for!

2 -I'm home for the year working full time bc the financial aid office really screwed me over. Basically, Ann Gitto said my parents never got her my financial aid info by the priority deadline when they really did (i've seen the correspondence) and Ann didn't tell me about it until June when I went to business office to pay my summer housing even though I was on campus the whole time and my parents were reachable. Then my parents wrote an appeal which she did nothing about. Therefore, I got no extra aid even though I went from full AEP to Hutchins, and that is the story of why I'm not at Simon's Rock. I have written to Mary Marcy about it, who did not follow up with Ann because she 'was not part of those original conversations,' to quote Mary's response. I guess Mary Marcy isn't willing to step on Ann Gitto's toes even when Ann ignores financial information sent to her and ignores the protocol for an appeal. If anything like this has happened to anyone else, please bring this to the attention of Mary Marcy by e-mailing her. I know of too many horror stories from the business office like this one, and Simon's Rock students deserve to be treated fairly by the business office.

3 - I'm applying to transfer schools for the fall of 09 and would love to hear from any alums who have gotten a degree in a foreign language (I'm majoring in French), who have taught English abroad, or who went to Middlebury, McGill, Vassar, Amherst and too many other schools to list! Thank you so much in advance. My e-mail is zoebird05@hotmail.com

Quick check!: Are there free-boxes* in all dorms?

(If not, if possible, some other people should help fix this: you just need to find a box, write "free box" on it, and put it in a public space, and then please let us know that you took care of that dorm.)

*That is, boxes (or tables) where people can donate stuff and take stuff for free

Cell Phones! (Again!) And Becky Fiske! Fun!
So I know that we've had the cell phone conversation numerous times before; Verizon is best, AT&T is patchy at best, but what about Sprint? I am forcing my family to switch to Credo Mobile (www.credomobile.com, they donate to Amnesty, ACLU, MSF, etc. because supposedly AT&T supports Repblicans?) but their service is actually provided by Sprint. I don't think I've ever heard that Sprint has awful coverage in the Berkshires, but it almost certainly does, because it's the Berkshires. But does anyone have Sprint who can tell me about the service they get?

Also, Becky Fiske, 5 Books of Moses class, good or bad? Everyone and their mother loves Becky Fiske as Dean of New Students, but my main image of her is still her Gilgamesh lecture. And I've heard that she is a much better dean than she is a teacher. I am trying to figure out an acceptable schedule for next semester (even though I have no guarantees on anything about going back) and schedule conflicts make me angry.

I hope this doesn't get lost in the return-from-break shuffle?

    Looooooove,
    Darcy
