Welcome to the LiveJournal semiotics community! This is a group for those interested in learning about and discussing semiotics.

     Semiotics is the study of the action or operation of signs (semiosis). It is an inherently interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspective that studies semiosis as it occurs throughout nature and culture.

     Semiosis is responsible for all meaning, whether discovered or created. It is what presents the universe as a mixture of static and dynamic quality.

     You do not have to be a professional or even an intermediate-level semiotician to join this community. If you have any interest in the vehicles of communication and relations of significance that make possible a meaningful world of experience, this community is for you.

     Also, new members are encouraged to post a “member introduction” entry (see here, for example). Tell us about yourself and what about semiotics interests or intrigues you—or even raises your eyebrow of suspicion.


COMMUNITY RULES

Please observe the following rules. If you break a rule, you will receive one warning. A second violation will get you banned:

     1. Posts must pertain to semiotics—theoretical or applied.
     2. Please put long posts (three or more paragraphs) behind an lj-cut.
     3. Posts must be public. No disabling comments.
     4. No flaming. Trading insults and barbs is unacceptable. Do not send comments with the intent of personally attacking others. You may attack positions, not persons. For example, you may comment, “Deconstructionism is retarded.” You may not comment, “You like Derrida? What are you, a dumbass?” Not all situations are this unambiguous, but what shall count as unacceptable interpersonal conduct in this community is up to the discretion of your moderator. If you have a problem with how another member is treating you, contact your moderator immediately. Do not retaliate. Do not create a new post about the offending party.
     5. Do not complain if your post has been deleted. A moderator only deletes posts if he has a very good reason to do so.
     6. No trolling. Do not write posts or responses with the intent of disrupting rational discussion. N.B.: Known LiveJournal trolls must provide good evidence of repentance before permitted entrance to the community.
     7. No multiple accounts. Please select an account for this community and stick with it.
     8. No sexual harassment. For that matter, no nonsexual harassment, either. Just don’t harass anyone, okay?
     9. No attacking other members for their race, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, appearance, etc.
     10. No deleting comments to hide the violation of a rule. You may delete comments to correct typos, etc. Do not delete other users’ comments.
     11. No polls.
     12. No kumites.
     13. In the words of Charles S. Peirce, founder of semiotics in its modern guise: Do not block the way of inquiry.
     14. If you feel another user has violated one of the above rules, rat them out immediately.
     15. If you feel that you yourself have violated one of the above rules (including this one), confess your malfeasances and you may incur a lesser punitive consequence. Nota bene: Your moderator cannot be bribed. Except with money.
