| About: | We've been thinking for a long time of starting to have bigger monthly meetings of the Sheffield Science / Speculative / Fantasy Fiction group, initially just getting people together but maybe looking at quizzes, games, guest speakers etc. like it used to be in the long ago. This group has been running for at least 30 years, ranging in size and frequency over that time, and is currently quite small. When I first joined it 15 years ago it met weekly in a pub and discussed SF books and some film, and was also a social group that went to conventions together, had parties etc. Now the discussions are more wide-ranging, there's a lot more general media chat, for example, and some of us really got into running conventions as well as just going to them. We're hoping to find new people within the Sheffield area, and that fans from places like Leeds and Manchester will come, maybe even further afield. This is one of the reasons we decided to have it on a Friday, so that friends could come for the weekend as well. If you're interested, why not come along? It's free (although the pub would like it if you bought DRINK), and we're friendly !!! (or at least, mostly harmless) We have a regular booking on the LAST FRIDAY IN THE MONTH WHICH HAS RECENTLY MOVED TO the Upstairs Function Room at the Old Queen's Head. This is the pub we currently meet in on Wednesday nights every week. There is a link with a map here: http://www.pub-explorer.com/syorks/pub/oldqueensheadsheffield.htm It's between the main bus station / railway station and the Ponds Forge sports complex, and is a jolly d. pub. It carries Thwaites' beers, does reasonable pub food with quite a wide ranging menu (lots suitable for vegetarians), last food orders not long before 7 pm. I have booked us in for the last Friday in the month for the rest of 2006, with the December meeting being the 22nd rather than the 29th (although that's subject to confirmation yet.) The booking is from 5:30 to closing time (I know this is an early start, but it will allow people working in town to go straight there and get something to eat.) Anyone is welcome, please bring fanzines, leaflets publicising stuff, etc. etc. Following the June meeting which will focus on planning, we hope to have a published schedule of activities for the next year. | |
