So, when I went ahead and switched over my website to KatieJacobs.com, I sort of forgot to mention that on this community, nor did I take the old Shards site down. Sorry guys.

For those of you who haven't friended my personal journal, [info]rvqavalon, you're welcome to do so. I generally friend people whose names I recognize through friends-of-friends, etc, especially if they take the time to just send me a blurb, "Hi, I'm Dorothea, I found you from _____". That being said, you can also comment if you don't want to be friended back, since I make most of my photo and event posts public. So if you want to be spared the fluff of my everyday life, lemme know.

Otherwise, though, I don't guarantee any updates here, seeing as I've already completed like, eight more projects since I last posted here. The track record isn't looking so great. So pop over to KatieJacobs.com for more content. And feel free to friend [info]rvqavalon if you want to be notified when the site updates--I always post and link on my journal.

Another project completed! [Jan. 28th, 2008|12:47 am]

Click the picture to visit the public entry on my personal journal about the chemise dress that I just completed for [info]lachwen to wear to a costumed dance event!

Next to complete will be the blue wool 1770s coat for my friend Andrew to wear to the same event.

Technically, it's supposed to be a Regency ball, but we're winding up as sort of a mixed bag of late 18th/early 19th century fashion. I'm all right with it!

Accomplishments for the past month [Jan. 16th, 2008|12:51 pm]

rvqavalon
So far in 2008 I...
  • Got sick

  • Slept more than previously believed to be humanly possible in an effort to get better

  • Started 1770s coat for Andrew

  • Started 1901 corset. On hold until I can afford busk/spiral boning.

  • Re-drafted 1870s corset pattern because I am 6" shorter in the torso than the pattern. This was also true of the 1901 pattern. Apparently, fat people are all supposed to be ten feet tall.

  • Agreed to make chemise dress (chemise la reine...?) for [info]lachwen

  • Knotted necklace of coral beads. This was more traumatic than it sounds.
  • Worked full-time hours at my extremely glamorous (haha) retail job in preparation for "inventory season," which is located conveniently after the height of Christmas season and before nobody-gets-any-hours-in-the-summer season.

I'll be chained to the sewing machine if anyone needs me.

Christmas projects [Dec. 21st, 2007|01:34 am]

Wow, everybody. Guess what! I'm done with college! I graduated this semester with exactly enough credits, a decent GPA, and good grades for my final semester of classes. All in all, I'm pretty pleased. Especially since this means I'm free to sew as much as I want now.

Upcoming projects may include:
1750s French regimental (because I am crazy)
1900-1910 corset (and, of course, corresponding outfit)
1770s Stays (again)
1770s Stays for Kate (commission by Andrew, fellow interpreter and good friend)
1870s Corset (and again, corresponding outfit)

Most of these things I already have materials for. In fact, I'm doing some dye experiments right this second for the French regimental. The 1910 and Victorian corsets are on hold until I can afford to buy corset hardware--busks and spiral boning. Why can't I afford them now, you ask?

The other big thing that happened to me this week (besides graduating) is that I bought a car. There will be pictures. It's a 2002 Focus wagon, if anyone cares. And it's grey. And the dealership even spelled it "g-r-E-y," which made me happy.

History paper? What history paper? [Nov. 21st, 2007|04:14 pm]

This is me, the first day of Thanksgiving break, totally not working on the eleven remaining pages of history paper that I have to write in the next two weeks.

Instead, I am posting pictures. They've all been posted on [info]rvqavalon, but friends-locked. Sorry if you see them twice.

The front piece of my new stays, with piping sewn on.

More inside. )

The only things left to do, really, are finish the last half of the tabs--on one side only--cut and insert boning, bind the top, and pound grommets. I'll be overstitching the grommets this time, I think. Oh--and I have to attach shoulder straps. Forgot about those. Fairly minor, though.

Stays ver. 2.0 [Nov. 8th, 2007|02:56 pm]

Umkay. I've been making pretty good progress on my new stays. Besides making piping, I also marked and sewed all the boning channels (of which there are a lot.)

Here's the re-drafted pattern. It's now seven pieces instead of five, and drafted slightly more along the lines of the 1780's stays from Corsets & Crinolines, as well as borrowing from the stays that Sally draped in Stratford.

For comparison, the old stays )

I'm too lazy to resize the picture of the boning channels all marked right now. There are lots of them, though. I was proud of myself for having the attention span to sew them all in one evening. Normally I would sew two or three and then wander away, intending to return in a few minutes...and then not sew anything else for a week. Not this time!

I need to stop being crazy. [Nov. 6th, 2007|12:02 am]

So at the moment, I'm stuck in a weird sort of limbo. I have five weeks left of classes, which translates to five weeks left of college. I have no idea what I'll be doing after that. The Senior Project of doom is done, leaving a strange gap in its absence. I'm spending a lot of time perfecting the art of denial, which, while it's rather successful, it's also rather unhealthy. Clearly, fabric therapy is needed.

This got long: my next project and why )

So the short version is: In the interests of ignoring my personal problems, I need a project, so I'm making a new pair of stays sort of like the old ones, only fancier with a pattern that I re-drafted. The end.

I have updated the website...again. This is highly unprecedented! There are two new pages, one for Holly's Faire corset-thing, the other for her Victorian corset. Update with links here.

Also, I turned my senior project portfolio in to my project adviser. It met with approval, so now I get to hand it in to the honors college. Almost finished with all the footwork!

The Senior Project website is done, I think! I've stayed up waaaaay too late a couple nights coding the thing, so please everyone go take a look and let me know if you find any broken links or pictures.

Eventually, there will be links on the Shards mainpage...but it's three a.m. right now and I'm supposed to be starting back at Hobby Lobby at eleven, so I really need to go get some sleep.

I don't even want to think about how long it's been since I did this, but I updated the website.

Still finishing up a fair bit of work on my senior project; more on that at a later date. Really.

[mood | confused]

I know I mentioned my senior project in my first "here's what I hope to do," post. Now that the Christmas stampede is over, I can finally get working on it! This is just going to get started over break; I have almost a year to complete it. However, I want opinions. I'm still trying to make my design sense work right, so I need all the help I can get.

My project proposal was to design and construct a collection of outfits that would be appropriate for use in historical interpretation settings. My interpretation venue of choice is Colonial Michilimackinac, an 18th century fort and village in Mackinaw City, Michigan. I'm trained in theatre costuming, so I'll be using farby theatre construction techniques that will produce garments of the correct silhouette but be sturdy enough to handle the really tough abuse we give our outfits at that site. They have to be able to stand up to frequent quick-changes and lots of hard use.

Here's a preview of some of my fabrics.

More under the cut. )

What do all the experts here think? ;)

Not exactly an update...but pictures! [Dec. 4th, 2006|12:49 am]

rvqavalon
Okay, I knew this was going to happen. I knew this semester was going to eat me alive--you see, I'm on track to graduate a semester early, as long as I can survive this one semester. It'll all be downhill from here, if I can make it through one more week with six classes and a full credit load. (Really, it's that one extra class that's killing me--the sixteen credits would be fine if it were only five classes)

In short, I'm sorry for not updating. I just haven't had the time. When I'm not at school, I'm at work, and if I'm home I probably am doing or should be doing homework.

BUT! That being said, I will be finished (FINISHED!!) in a week and a half. December 13 is my last day of exams, and barring a natural disaster or act of God, I'll be free to do as I please for three whole weeks over Christmas break. yaaay! Then I hope to be able to code pages for my last couple of costumes and start on my senior project.

Oh, yeah, my senior project! I failed to mention this one tiny detail--I totally asked the honors college to give me four credits for building costumes...and they approved it! So, over the next few months, I'll be designing and building four costumes, built with theatrical techniques and suitable for use in historical interpretation. I'm still working on fabric choices and stuff, so more on that later.

In the meantime, I have a couple pictures--not exactly a site update, but they do include pictures of people in costume. I had to do a mini portfolio thing for my Spanish business writing class this semester and I chose to translate materials from Michilimackinac into Spanish. This included a brochure design, which I will put under a cut tag to save your friends page.

Fairly large images; cut for space )

Please note--my skills are with fabric. Neither graphic design nor typography are my forte. However, I do like how these turned out, even though I'm sure a real graphic designer could do wonders for 'em. All the photos are from the 2006 summer season, taken by Ben, Cara, and myself. Not bad for a computer scientist, pre-med/history student, and a Spanish dork! ;)

That would be my "bzuh?" face you're seeing there.

Just a couple shots of the caraco jacket, even though I don't have a page coded yet. I meant to--I really did--but there have been some complications on the computer front. See, my old laptop, he's dying. Not dead yet, but on his way out. So I got a new one...which was a fiasco of its own for a while and I won't go into that--but the short version is that I haven't transferred my stuff over yet. So I don't have my handy-dandy page code document accessible at the moment.

So to make up for it, here are the pictures I'm going to use )

As far as non-formal attire, the caraco jacket ensemble is my favorite. It's very comfortable and easy to wear, and I love the fabric. It was a lucky find in the clearance area at JoAnn's. It's called "Florica" by Peter Pan Fabrics--I got that off the selvage and filed it away for future reference because I like it so much!

Just like I said; still working on site updates. This time, you get one new page and more pictures added to an existing one.

I put up a page for the Green linen round gown. It's not much text, mostly pictures, so go take a look! It's not linked on the site quite yet, so be the first on your block to see it!

Also, there are new pictures at the bottom of the polonaise page. Finally found some pictures of the ensemble with the red petticoat. I love that petticoat. It needs mending because my new shoes caught the hem and tore it out in the back. Also, it constantly needs ironing...but I still like it.

Coming soonish:
  • Caraco jacket
  • Striped ruffly shortgown
  • Updates/rework of the Regency ensemble--pelisse and dress are both finished, but need pictures taken.
  • Caps & hats

There are other things that ought to be done, too, but some of them aren't quite finished yet and if I get too ambitious over this page-coding thing, I'm going to start dreaming in angle brackets and CSS. Nooooo! ;P

Another update! Not Fort clothes, sadly, but I finally added pictures to the Venetian diary (click!).

That poor costume has been neglected. I do like it, but it has some fitting issues--one shoulder likes to fall down, and I shrank out of it. I lost just a little bit of weight after I made it, so it isn't as supportive as it used to be, and so isn't as comfortable. I always meant to make sleeves for it out of a lovely maroon velvet I have in the stash, but never did. Also, I kind of still feel like a couch while wearing it. And I think I look fat in the pictures, so I'm kind of unmotivated.

Maybe someday I'll try again.

Web update! Way overdue, but here it is:
Click!

There will hopefully be many more pages coming. Over the summer, I worked for Mackinac State Historic Parks and a lot--a lot of sewing took place. I just have to find time (now that school's started again) to resize all the pictures and code up the pages. Shouldn't take too long...right?

...right?

*dusts off cobwebs, coughs*

Wow, I haven't been here in quite a while--since before Christmas break, I see. Oops. *sheepish grin*

Well, all right. A lot has happened since the last time I updated, in terms of both life and sewing. I was going to get a whole lot done over break, but I wound up getting a nagging illness that kept me pretty much useless for most of break. It wasn't crippling or anything--I just had a week-long cold that turned into constant headaches if I overextended myself...so I tried not to do that. Anyway, I got over it about a week before break ended and kicked it into high gear (or as close as I get to "high gear") and got a bunch done. And then classes started again and slowed me down some, but I still have quite a few things that need to be covered.

Project #1, the Elinor Pelisse )

And this wasn't a planned project, but...

The Final Project?

DONE!

I finished the 1770's gown this evening, in time to wear it to Holly's band concert. Most of the folks there know me well enough by now that it wasn't too much of a surprise that I showed up in some odd frock a la Pirates of the Caribbean. It held up well, looked pretty spiffy, and was pretty comfortable. Well, the dress was comfortable; the shoes I wore, not so much.

Now, all I have to do is finish my 3/4 circle skirt and I'll be done with costume class stuff.

Of course, I also have about six tons of other stuff to do for finals, but eh. The dress is done! :D
