Re: Show respect for our national anthem - Yesterday, 12:31 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Singapore cannot afford to have an island mentality of who is Singaporean. We need to embrace our foreign talent. They form the core of our institutions.

We need to understand that they too are thinking of their homes when Singapore celebrates its "form of identity" called national day. Thus we should allow everyone to hang up their own flags and be part of our inclusive society. We should be celebrating "International Day" as we are a 1st class global city. We will be the first in the world to replace national day with InterNational Day.

Can you tell Singaporeans what exactly they should be celebrating?
* GST hikes?
* ERP hikes?
* GIC /Temasek investments of their hard earned money in failing banks?
* School inaccessbility?
* Food price hikes?
* Electricity hikes?
* No babies for young parents
* No marriage for singles
* Expensive Kindergardens.
* Maids who get treated better than hawker cleaners.

We won't even have enough Singaporeans for national parades soon.
We will have to include foreigners to dance for us. It can be outsourced I guess.

These are the host of issues we celebrate. And its no wonder that the resident committees have to hang out flags because the average Singaporean can't be bothered, and the PRs couldn't care less.

Welcome to the new Singapore, where the National Anthem has become as irrelevant as the citizen.

i didn't even realized that the flag that was hung outside my window was there until the wind blew at it and it flew up (sorta like covered half my window... the condos around the area hardly have a resident hanging their own flag... the hdbs where the common corridors are facing inwards hardly have any either...). so if you ask me...

I would die for the country not because im a patriot or kiss up to the party's behind, its because im born and raised here. I learned to walk on this soil when i was a child. I dont hate the party, i only wish they could unthighten their policy. I dont have the community but i how i wish they could see this lifestyle in a different light rather than just money money money.

So inconclusion.. i love this country only because ITS my home and nothing else but somehow how i wish i could go somewhere else until the there is change in the system and its people.

I agree with this. I don't necessarily have a community, but I grew up with the things here and I feel weird with other stuff. Changing it too much erodes this feeling, turning it into "money money money" will just make me feel like I no longer belong here, and if this feeling is lost I'm not going to have a reason to stay.

This is National Day we're talking about. We're celebrating our independence from Malaysia. We're celebrating autonomy. We're celebrating our peace, progress and prosperity. I know, I know, what sort of progress, what sort of prosperity when there are rising food prices, rising oil prices, rising everything. Then let's just stop living in our own world okay? Every other country is facing the same shit. Resources are depleting, prices are going up. It's a fact.

Let's just not take for granted how much we've grown for the past 43 years. If not, I'll be uneducated and living in a swamp that's lit by candles. We can walk at night at 2am and not be afraid of crime (not saying we're crime free, but you get what I mean). You can't say that of Washington or Chicago. We're not perfect, but really, what are we complaining about? Because right now, we all sound like brats who want more and not do anything.

No matter what we're facing right now, when the Pledge and National Anthem came on TV, I still felt a tear form in my eye and a sense of pride to be Singaporean. I think we can afford to take a break and be happy for a day. :)

ive stopped bothering abt national day or national day flags - those money used to BURN fireworks, or create heart shapes in the skies, or have men fly across the skies precariously - those money - could hv been used to aid the average singaporeans like me!

tell me something... have u seen the joys and happiness of a child when they watch the national day or fireworks? i have... i mean there is nothing wrong in cashing in our taxes into this.. we enjoyed it so as thousands of people.. btw.. these fireworks.. are sponsored by companies not totally by the government. You think the government wants to spend all our taxes for this? they know their budget my friend. And another thing this year's national day was the lowest they could ever get their money out due to the declining economy.

IF you wanna whine.. whine about the god damn ERP and transport pricing but dont whine about our LIBERTY and FREEDOM *go figure*

I think we're in a transition phase, stuck in between our still-present search for a national identity, while having to adjust to a new reality which is more cosmopolitan and ethereal (in terms of people flow) than our heritage.

Well, National Day should to be a day where we remember that we're free and sovereign, but I don't really blame those who feel jaded because the pace of progress has left many people behind.

Analogously, how does one play catch up if the lane is surrounded by vehicles moving ever faster? It's not easy, and you need to spot the gap.

What I dislike about the NDP is the lack of inclusiveness and the continued presence of the government dressed in their party outfits. It's National Day, not PAP Day. So, ditch the white outfits, or have the MPs from the other political parties take part in their own party outfits too.

National Day is only as valuable as the people perceive it to be.

The imagery of food is a powerful one, as we are still young as a nation. I'd say, cherish what binds us, nevermind if its not one of those state-imposed icons.

Yeah, it's not like anything to do with language or anything. The concept of Singaporean identity is still very laid back, but I like to pretend that it's moving along beyond Ein Volk, Ein PAP, Ein Singapore. (Social engineering, blah blah blah. The fact is, the government can't make me feel homesick because I can't get delicious local chilli elsewhere.)

Everything starts with production, so naturally food is something to feel attached to. To be honest, the concept of primordialism and national identity is so fluid, that the only historicity of nationhood is fabricated at best. I like to think that even without centuries of history, we're still capable of having a unique identity without "engineering" by a small elite.

While I am glad that Singapore has progressed and all and is a very safe place to live, it always strikes me as ironic that we're celebrating the fact that we got kicked out of Malaysia, and yet at the same time I'm proud that we made it on our own. (:

Things were more complicated than that for political and economical reasons. What Malaysia wanted and what Singapore wanted was irreconciliable in the end.

There was a time, when people said that Singapore won't make it, but we did..........

This year, Aljunied GRC decided to hang up the national flag for us along every HDB's unit! But it's only for those blocks facing the main roads though?

While the PAP does have a large part to play in raising the cost of living, do bear in mind that there are numerous external factors that are driving the cost of living up relentlessly. In some cases, the government has done what it can to help. For example, the government has put many of its building projects on hold or scaled them down so as not to compete with the private sector for building materials and drive costs up. However, because of other factors outside their control, the price still goes up. At the end of the day, everyone blames the government when any prices go up. That, to me, is slightly incoherent.

When I was in a training camp recently, I was honored to meet a certain foreign officer who had served and operated in many troubled countries in Asia, Africa and Europe.

He stayed in Singapore for a couple of months and when he was about to leave, I remembered him sighing and he said "You guys are lucky to be Singaporeans." And he left.

And I believe, we are somewhat lucky to not have been born in some other troubled country in a different part of the world. That alone is a reason to celebrate. But that's just my two cents.
