I voted for PAP in 2006 elections: WP candidate
Taken off the Straits Times:

"How should an opposition leader vote in a general election (GE), especially one who is contesting the polls?

For Workers' Party leader (Yaw Shin Leong), he voted for the ruling People's Action Party candidate in the 2006 GE - and has now found himself in the eye of an online storm.

Mr Yaw, a Bukit Panjang resident, had revealed in his blog that he voted for the PAP's Teo Ho Pin who was contesting the single-member ward against Singapore Democratic Party chairman and former opposition MP Ling How Doong.

The disclosure was just a one-liner: - Teo Ho Pin (MP) - Good MP. I voted for him in GE06."

Frankly I don't see the problem in voting for the PAP in a ward that your party isn't contesting in, and against a party that you don't belong to. The Opposition parties did agree not to contest each other's wards, but it was simply an obligation to vote for anyone BUT a PAP candidate, not a stipulation or inked agreement between the Opposition parties.

I mean seriously, what's the deal and why is everyone so pissed off? It's not as if he exercised his position to influence multiple votes; it appears to be a rather personal decision. You could argue on the basis of principle, but that would simply paint him as an irrational person.

For the record, I voted Opposition the last time I had a chance to. And it's a pretty shitty headline - technically it's the truth, but with a sentence like that the editor's sensationalized it to the point where perceptions are negatively enhanced. OMG TRAITORZ

At least it proves one thing - the fact that people are miffed about this "betrayal" underlines how much the ruling party is not thought of kindly. Thank God we've still got at least that.

I don't see the big deal either. Voting is a personal matter, and disclosure doesn't change the fact that he did vote PAP. It's his choice and his right, and I respect that. Besides, the coalition looked like it was formed for pragmatic reasons, rather than on any real common ideological ground. The WP and SDP are very different parties.

Anyway, I would vote for almost anyone over Ling How Doong.

No big deal, it's nice to see opposition MPs act rationally.

Me, I'd vote for opposition if I had the chance, just to (hopefully with fingers crossed!) increase my pre-election payoffs. I mean, Growth Dividends and GST Offset Package.

/non-seditious *whimper*

It's just about choosing the lesser of the 2 evils.

Ling How Doong? Hahaha. I'm not surprised. He said he voted for Prof Teo because he was a good MP, and i think the record shows he may very well be right despite the furore.

Why should he vote the SDP, anyway? Any critics of Yaw out there should think about this question.

a gesture of magnanimity. It is in his full and free right to vote for whoever he choses and no one else should be able to critique as such.

this is actually why they say "Your vote is secret"..
the response so far has been unwarranted... but he could also have avoided the whole thing by stopping at "Good MP" and left out the voting thing.. which was his prerogative to reveal...

Your vote is secret so somebody cannot force/buy (and verify) that you vote for somebody in particular.

People are upset because the voting process isn't just about the people involved; it's also supposed to be about ideals. Voters are supposed to vote for those that they deem hold the ideals representative of the ideals they themselves believe in. Having an Opposition MP vote for someone from the PAP signifies either that the MP doesn't deem ideals all that significant - he would rather vote based on knowledge of the personal than the ideals the man is deemed to hold, or that the MP didn't even consider the dichotomy between the person's capability and his ability to represent, based on his ideals. Either way, it tells badly of this member of the Opposition.
