I used to frequent La Forketta, and while we always order drinks anyway, I don't think I'll head back anymore.
"The managing director of Italian restaurant La Forketta, Ms Gracie Vitale, said: "Our patrons are serious diners and come for our food, not to taste water. It's the customer with a budget who insists on tap water."
Aside from the fact that I have absolutely no idea why a mid-priced Italian restaurant thinks their clientele is formed by "serious diners", I am boycotting snobbery. What a shitty thing to say about customers. Stupid Dempsey and its high horse.

Why are there no details about what constitutes as a trader?
What if a person decides to downgrade (e.g. S$2 million home to a S$500,000 condominium)? Why should anyone be taxed for that? Let's assume the first home was bought in pre-crisis 2008, and homeowner cannot afford the current payments and is forced to downgrade.
So much for curbing inflation in a stable market. They've only succeeded in inducing an unhealthy climate of nerves and confusion.

Making and Unmaking the Asylum is a book which tells of two entangled stories – one of the misapplication of modern medicine – and the other of the resilience and resourcefulness of those who suffered from the disease and its terrible consequences.
It is also a book which demands that we examine the nature and consequences of our unceasing pursuit of modernity. It calls to attention the discomforting shape of our beliefs in modern science, disease and contagion.

Help A Child Learn to Read: Donate Children’s Books to the South Africa Mobile Library Project
Show your support for the South Africa Mobile Library Project by donating English books (new or used) for children in remote areas who do not have easy access to learning materials. Come together and help a child in South Africa learn to read today!
As part of Sony's continued commitment towards contributing towards the next generation, Sony is supporting the South Africa Mobile Library Project this year. The purpose of this project is to visit schools in remote areas with books for children and teachers who would otherwise not have access to such learning materials.
The project has been well-received in the poorer regions of South Africa and so far has a fleet of more than 35 mobile libraries in use. Sony Singapore will be conducting a book donation drive from 1 - 31 July 2009, and we encourage you to donate English children's books (new or used) at the new Sony Style store at Orchard Central. So come down to Sony Style and help a child learn to read today!

Tan Kah Kee Station

posted by:

Does anyone else think that this isn't exactly a very good idea? In its initial public consultation exercise, LTA had already stated that "the names chosen should identify the station readily and also have a link to the heritage of the neighbourhood [but] should not be named after public structures, or commercial and residential developments". In a way, naming it after a person does not violate these guidelines, but if you look at every other station in the MRT network, they are all named after geographical place names for easy idea of where they are. Already it is confusing enough for those not living in Bt Panjang or Sengkang where each LRT station is (but that is understandable because the LRT is located within a relatively small area). As far as I can recall, in all the cities around the world that I've been to, all the tube stations are named after physical and geographical place names, not people.
The difference between station names like Mountbatten, Clementi, and Yishun, and with Tan Kah Kee, however, is that the area which the station is located is not called Tan Kah Kee—it's called Bukit Timah or Dunearn. Even the estate where the station is to be located is called Duchess or Watten (which were the other shortlisted names). Imagine what would happen if Bras Basah station was named 'De La Salle' or 'St Joseph's' instead, or if the Esplanade station had been named 'Rajaratnam', or Novena Station had been named 'Tan Tock Seng', or Potong Pasir had been named 'St Andrew's' or 'Sherman Venn'?
For reference, these are the LTA approved names for Circle and Downtown Line stations:
Final name (working name)Haw Par Villa (West Coast) Caldecott (Thomson) Telok Ayer (Cross Street) Downtown (Landmark) Bayfront (Bayfront) Rochor (Rochor) Stevens (Stevens) Tan Kah Kee (Duchess) Sixth Avenue (Sixth Avenue) King Albert Park (Blackmore) Beauty World (Beauty World) Hillview (Hillview) Cashew (Cashew) Bukit Panjang (Petir)

The Substation Moving Images presents
FIRST TAKE
6 July 2009
The Substation Theatre
8pm, FREE ADMISSION
First Take, happening every 1st Monday of the month at The Substation, is a popular screening of new local short films and is followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. A platform for new filmmakers and anyone who is interested in filmmaking to meet, exchange ideas and show their work. See the future talents of Singapore film!
1. ONE PLUS ONE / KELLY SWEE / 11 MIN / 2008 / PG
Synopsis:
A story of two lonely people, who have very similar yearnings for somebody to accompany them, due to their solitary lives and an unknown sense of loneliness. The two characters turn out to complement each other.
Director's Statement:
This is the first short film produced and directed by me. I had some hands-on experimentation with cameras since mid 2007, and I learnt my film techniques in school.
2. LOVE LAWS / CHERIYAN LYDIA NATALIA / 17 MIN / 2009 /
Synopsis:
The Love Laws govern who should be loved, how much, and by whom. Despite this, Ammu Kochamma, a Touchable widow, has an illicit relationship with her Untouchable lover, Velutha Paapen, and plans to flee with him. The story unfolds to show the dire consequences of transgressing these rules; thus pushes the characters to their limit. Love Laws explores the meaning of forbidden love against the backdrop of tradition.
Director's Statement:
I sought to create an Indian iconographic piece in the parameters of Singapore while exploring an intense dimension towards the film, filing it with beautiful landscapes while subtly mirroring that of India. Being greatly influence by the works of Director Deepa Mehta and the fascination of the New Indian Cinema, I present a film for all to follow the plight of the characters, while enjoying the emotional journey alongside them.
3. LOL.SG / MARILYN LOO / 18 MIN / 2009 / PG
Synopsis:
LOL.SG is a feature documentary that explores the local comedy scene and the concept of cultural identity in Singapore. “Lame, cliché, boring.” Increasingly, Singapore humour has been labelled as such. However, we offer an alternative and unexpected take on Singaporean humour that shows it is indeed alive and kicking.
Director's Statement:
Humour has proven itself to be a very abstract topic to tackle, but the satisfaction in seeing this project take shape is immense beyond description. LOL.SG is our first full-fledged short and it has been a learning experience. It is about rediscovering Singapore culture, and reflecting what or where the funny is. It is about ignoring that gnawing fear of failure, and taking the plunge to do something meaningful and possibly funny.
