Congrats to all the finalists, though I wonder if someone could explain how "World Enough and Time" qualifies for a Nebula.

I cannot imagine how a fanfilm can qualify for a Nebula when fanfiction obviously can't.

There's something seriously rotten in Denmark for this to have even been considered.

"The Evolution of Trickster Stories ..." by Kij Johnson has haunted me ever since I read it. There's a lot of good stuff in that category, but I do hope that one wins.

Good luck to everyone, regardless.

So what's the scoop?

Congratulations to everyone who's on the ballot. Some fine work there, and worthy of the attention.

But...um... what's the scoop with New Voyages being a nominee? The New Voyages films are self-financed fan productions (their Web site is full of the standard fannish disclaimers), not studio products. The Nebula rules say, "Script: a professionally produced audio, radio, television, motion picture, multimedia, or theatrical script". So under what criteria does a fan film qualify as pro?

I'm wondering where (or if or how) SFWA draws a line. It also makes me wonder, if this film is an acceptable nominee, why media-related fiction that is professionally produced (say, by Pocket or other major publishers) doesn't qualify people for membership and doesn't see nomination.

And it also begs the question, if fan films are acceptable, then why isn't fan fiction? To take it to its most absurd extreme, I might ask when did SFWA start endorsing copyright infringement--because that's how this nomination could be interpreted.

I'm only an associate member, not an active member, but I think these are legitimate questions and they need to be answered.

The eligibility of "Worlds Enough and Time" is under review by the SFWA Awards Rules Committee.

Professional media-related fiction is and has always been a valid SFWA membership credential.

Appearance on the Nebula ballot does not constitute an endorsement by SFWA.

As the rules are presently written, fan fiction is not disqualified from Nebula consideration.

Hi, Janna. I wanted to wait until we had come up with a definitive answer before responding. It's great to see you taking an interest in SFWA stuff!

Hi, Scarlettina. Professionally published media tie-in work, such as Star Trek novels, Star Wars novels, Spider-Man novels, or game novels, are acceptable for membership qualification. We've always accepted legitimate media tie-in work.

Why doesn't it turn up on the Nebula ballot? That's a question you'd have to ask each SFWA member, I guess. There's no rule against it.

Best,
Robin

Hi, Janna! Actually, we met once long ago while you were editing in New York and just before you went to Seattle. But it's been ages.
