SFWA's Rainbow Connection
I asked earlier about reasons for joining and staying with SFWA. The best answer I've seen all day was posted in the newsgroups last night.

While talking about SFWA's PR yesterday in the newsgroup, I made the following comment:

"I'm not trying to say we need a bunch of SFWA cheerleaders running around sprinkling happy dust and farting rainbows at people..."

Within a few hours, we had Nebula-winning authors volunteering to chair the Farting Rainbow committee. And then [info]maryrobinette posted this link: http://www.zazzle.com:80/sfwa_farting_rainbow_t_shirt-235210275612449275.

Why stick with SFWA? Because it's full of delightfully insane authors who do things like this.

Please note that all proceeds go to the Emergency Medical Fund.

I guess the SFWA will be my Rainbow Connection. I can't wait to attend an official SFWA function. I hope it's outdoors ;)

I've put forth a proposal that all future SFWA functions include a bowl of Skittles.

I am particularly amused by the fact that the colors of the image's rainbow are not in prismatic order, making it most definitely a science fiction rainbow. ;-)

At the risk of sounding hopelessly old-fashioned, this is the kind of thing that would drive me away from an organization. :P

There's talk of an alternate version of the T-shirt. While my inner 12-year-old is highly amused, I'm also hopeful that we get a toned-down version.

I have to say, I was a little uneasy when I first saw this, too. I get the reasons it's funny, but ... well, the rest of the world already pretty much sees us as a bunch of ineffective argumentative children, and this, umm, isn't likely to help any.

I think rather more highly of science fiction than "farting rainbows."

This inevitably brings to mind the ugly US cit in the French Caribbean this summer wearing a t-shirt that blazoned over a mooning set of buttocks:

"I Fart in Your Face Because I Am A Texan and I Can"

There were people from all over Europe and other parts of the world. No one wore anything like this in any language.

Y'know what? Silly as this is, it shows that SFWA is responsive to criticism and shows a willingness to come up with innovative/creative solutions to problems. Little things *do* matter. Plus the shirt is funny as hell. =) Thanks for the laugh!

The t-shirt is also apparently popular. I just got this email from Zazzle.

"Congratulations! One of your products, SFWA Farting Rainbow T-Shirt, was selected as the Hottest T-Shirt of the Day by the Zazzle Community.

It's currently featured at the top of the T-Shirt section and will be on sale from now until the end of Wednesday, December 12, 2007 for 20% off."

I think it's hysterical. I'd wear it--does it come in women's cap sleeve style? It's a conversation starter.

Yep! You can put the picture on any of the productions Zazzle offers and they offer women's cap sleeves.
