10/15/1931 - 7/26/2008 He ran the Games Club of Maryland Westminster branch, and he (along with his wife, back when he was married) were regular Balticon attendees.

And he was my friend. It was always nice to go to a community event and see him in his "Tooky the Clown" persona.

Ann Green, 1961-July 29, 2008.

Sympathies to Steve Green, her husband of 25 years, and the rest of her family and friends.

Just got word that AJ Budrys died today.

I just read in today's SciFiWire that Alexander courage, the composer of the theme for the original Star Trek, died on May 15 at the age of 88.

Rory Root was owner of Comic Relief in Berkeley.  He died on Monday of complications following surgery.  He raised the bar for comics retailers and was extremely well known not just in comics circles, but also in general fannish circles.

Author of the Myth Series, Phule's Regiment, and editor and co-creator of Thieves' World, Robert Lynn Asprin died today.

This comes from [info]filkertom (and I really wish he would join this community). Comics artist Will Elder died yesterday at the age of 86. Tom didn't mention a cause of death, nor was one given on Elder's Wikipedia entry.

I just read a few minutes ago that John Phillip Law, the actor who played the angel Pygar in Barbarella, died Tuesday at the age of 70. I'm not certain as to the COD.

Her husband, Paul Mangan, wrote a nice piece about her at:

I don't know if he would qualify for mention on the Memorial List, but Albert Hofmann, the scientist who discovered LSD, died on April 29 at the age of 102. According to Wikipedia, the cause of death was a heart attack.

In the latest issue of Alexiad, Carolyn Clowes reports that Janet Kagan died on February 29. Among other things, she won the Hugo in 1993 for The Nutcracker Coup.

As many of you already know, Charlton Heston died Saturday at the age of 84. While his best-known roles are in The Ten Commandements and Ben-Hur, his genre connections are The Omega Man, Planet Of The Apes, and Soylent Green.

And I'm really surprised that I haven't seen anyone make the comment that he is now Soylent Green.

Sir Arthur C. Clarke died today.

I saw this in yesterday's USA Today. Dave Stevens, the creator of The Rocketeer, died March 10 from leukemia. He was 52.

I first saw this on Yahoo! News, and several people have already mentioned it on their LJs, but it definitely needs to be listed here. Gary Gygax, the creator of Dungeons & Dragons, and generally considered the father of the role-playing game, died early this morning at the age of 69.

I haven't seen a definitive listing of the cause of death, but he had been in poor health for several months.

To use a line that several people have already used, Mr. Gygax missed his last saving throw, and has used up all of his hit points.

Joan Eslinger died on 7 February. She was a good friend and a companion for many memorable adventures, some in Illinois, where we met, some in California, where she lived for most of the last two decades.

You might know her from Unix hacking, science fiction fandom, belly-dancing, Usenet newsgroups, General Technics, or interpreting the cryptic lyrics to "American Pie."

You might know her as:

I think most of you may have already seen this, but Roy Scheider died from complications from myeloma (some reports say it was from a staph infection). He was 75, and his best known genre connection was starring in the mid-1990s TV series SeaQuest DSV. He was 75.

I saw this on SciFiWire today. Maila Nurmi, who played horror movie hostess Vampira, was found dead on her home on January 10. According to her entry on Wikipedia, cause of death was cardiac arrest.

Derek Pickles, 1950s Brit Fan credited with inventing "The Usual" as the standard method of payment for fanzines.

I don't have Derek's date of death, just an email note received today from his son, Andrew Pickles, saying that Derek died "recently."
