About

This is a workshop for writers (and readers) of speculative fiction to put up works for critique, critique the works of others, ask questions, discuss and debate, share resources, and just have a good time.

Basic Rules

  1. Title all posts and proofread, please.
  2. Don't delete comments. Just don't. Seriously.
  3. We require 50 words of critique for every 500 words of fiction posted to the community for critique, rounding down with a minimum 50 word critique for every piece of writing posted for critique. Multiple critiques can be used to make credit for one post, but one critique can not be used as credit for multiple posts. First posts for critique can have their credits made up before the next post for critique.
  4. LJ-cuts are good. ( <lj-cut text="Name of Cut"> Text to put under cut <lj-cut> )
  5. Discussion and debate is encouraged, but please be outwardly civil. If flamage occurs, [info]coyotecult will give all parties involved spatula discipline regardless of "who started it".
  6. Original or copyright unencumbered/commercially viable derivative fiction only.
  7. Promotion is allowed, with the caveat of no banners or promotional images. We're writers, we can promote using words. Please no hit and run promotions—participate in the community some if you're going to promote!

Introductions

If you're new to [info]sfandf_critters, we'd love to see an introduction post! We keep track of them. Title it "Introduction" or something equivalent and say whatever you like, but we also have a handy survey prepared:

You can also use the Intro Post Maker!

Posting for Critique

Make sure you have enough critique credits; first time posters for critique are allowed to make up the credits at a later time. The title of the post should follow the format "Title // genre // wordcount". The first thing in the post should be the header, then the piece under an LJ-cut, then links to the critiques used for credit, like so:

All of these things are for easy bookkeeping. Ratings follow the G/PG/PG-13/R/NC-17 scale. Wordcounts can be rounded to the nearest 100 (if you require a wordcounter, there is one here). Currently our work for critique types are: article/essay, chapter/excerpt, character design, novel, outline, poetry, story, synopsis/outline, and world design. However, no matter what the type, they're all labelled with the same size categories and require the requisite amount of credits for their given wordcount.

If you're posting a revision or serial work, you might consider linking to the past entries in your post. Please consider formatting for ease of reading—if you don't know how to do that HTML hoodoo voodoo, read Formatting for LJ and the Web or check out the Prose Formatter.

To find out out how many critique credits are needed to post a story, take the wordcount of the story, divide by 500 and round up. To find out how many critique credits you have, take critiques you're going to use for credit, add up the words you yourself wrote, divide by 50 and round down. You can also use the Credit List Maker to make a list of critiques to put where "CRITIQUES USED FOR CREDIT" is, a whole lot simpler than doing it by hand and highly recommended.
