What the heckity heck book is this? [Nov. 27th, 2009|12:04 am]

gamoid
This Thanksgiving, my father and I were discussing old SF books, as we often do. He challenged me to find a novel he read years ago - naturally, he can't remember the title or the author, only vague, half-remembered plot details. My Google-fu is apparently too weak, but if the Forum hivemind can help us out. we'd both be highly appreciative. Here goes:

A human ship makes first contact during a chance encounter in orbit around a planet. The human ship sends a friendly hail over the radio, except what the humans don't know is that radio frequencies disrupt their biology-based communications systems, which are actually the brains (or similar organs) of their revered ancestors. Naturally, this sparks interstellar war, though both sides think the other opened fire unprovoked.

It's late, and I know details there are scarce. Let me know if I can clarify anything here. Answers will be passed on to my father to verify.

Thanks!

UPDATE: Mystery solved - it's the Conqueror Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. Thanks, everyone, and double special thanks to [info]filkerdave.

I overlooked the fact that there is no school on Wednesday. So there will be no movie night this coming week. Stay tuned for further updates after thanksgiving break.

Meeting notes: November 19th, 2009 [Nov. 19th, 2009|10:18 pm]

Meeting called to order at 8:34 PM

President’s Report: Firstly, I want to make sure that all of you are eating breakfast because it’s very important to eat breakfast. Secondly, we’re not having meeting next week because of Thanksgiving.

Vice President’s Report (Ian): I’m sure if Jackie was here she would say, “CLEAN, YOU FUCKERS.”

Treasurer’s Report: I got an updated statement from USG detailing what we have spent the money on. It turns out we’ve been paying every month for a phone we haven’t been using. They’re looking into getting us a credit for the months that the phone wasn’t hooked up. … but we now have a working phone, same number as before.

Secretary’s Report: I was doing some cleaning and shelving this past Tuesday and I just want to reiterate: CLEAN UP YOUR SHIT. I found lollipop sticks, a used food plate (under one of the bookshelves!), and a lot of other disgusting stuff.

Librarian’s Report: SHELVE. It’s really helpful. I need it. Like a baby needs a diaper.

AC Report: Bristol County Jr. came in to-day, we’re still waiting on Hercules. We are now declaring war on Phil. I don’t need to make justifications. I’m a tyrant! Festivus is Saturday, December 5th from 12:00 to 6:00. Be here! The ACs are empowering Holly as Forum Mom – I, like many others, have had enough of people’s poor cleaning habits. Seriously, clean your shit or Holly will attack you with a vacuum.

Sub AC for Life: I’M BACK! I’m alive! … and I see we still do not have a video cabinet. I have ordered this month’s movies: “Transformers 2,” the new “Star Trek,” and the 1989 “Batman” movie.

Historian’s Report: A cautionary tale… The Night Crew. Back in the late 1990s (I believe it was 1997), there were a group of Forumites who liked to hang out in the lounge late into the night blasting music (among other things). This caused a lot of disruption for the AMS grad students and it also caused a general degeneration of the Forum’s reputation among other campus clubs because it got us into trouble with the building managers. This shows you how the actions of a small group can affect the reputation of the group as a whole. Don’t do anything to make us look bad on campus!

Supplementary Historian’s Report (Ian): Another entry into the Alternate History timeline… Roman ended his term as librarian with mass love and success and after this he decided to run for president and of course he had the support of all other officers. It was a close race, but in the end Roman won because he was just that great. … and then he gots hit by a truck, because no universe could allow such a thing to happen.

Committees
PR: I miss my [other PR officer].

Fundraising: Hurray for Peter’s hat!

Old Business
Lukas: Would you like to age some business?

Ian: Yes. Old Forumites, let us know if you’re coming to Festivus. We’d like to see you.

New Business
Drow: I had an idea that I wanted to run by you guys. Even though we’re a science fiction club, I think it would also be good if we also had some science fact material. I think it would be nice to have Carl Sagan’s Cosmos Series and the History Channel’s Universe Series.
Ian: We can’t make any more allocations his semester, but we will discuss this for the future.

Announcements
Ian: Happy Birthday, Matt!

Phil: There’s a linguist who taught his son Klingon for the first three years of his life.
Ian: I argue that that’s neglect!

Ian: SPOILER ALERT – God damn you Heroes, stop cockteasing us with the death of Mohinder!

Lukas: New Moon is coming out… so brace yourselves!

Holly: I’m going to be cleaning in the Forum either to-morrow at 11:30 or Tuesday night after D&D.

Pete: If you’re the last one in the Forum at night, tie up the garbage bag and leave it outside the door.

Meeting called to order at 8:33 PM

President’s Report: I’ve got some good news and I’ve got some bad news. The bad news is, I have no good news.

Vice President’s Report: CLEAN~ They deleted our mailbox, which is kind of weird… but we’re getting a new one.

Treasurer’s Report: DONATE~

Secretary’s Report: Why don’t more people like Stargate: Atlantis?!

Librarian’s Report: I’ve been putting some boxes on the shelves. I realise that it’s very easy to be distracted in the Forum, especially now that we have a television and a couch, but it’s November now and we really need to get this finished. If you even put half a box away whenever you come down, I bet we could be done by December. Go for later letters in the alphabet (e.g. L and onward) or you could shift shelves from the beginning to make shelving easier for us in the long run. So, in short: SHELVE.

Ian: An alumni of the university, Richard Reichner, was down inquiring whether or not we had gotten his friend’s sci-fi book collection (of approximately 1000 books), which he had donated shortly before he died. We don’t think he was a Forumite, but even if he donated it to campus/library, we probably would have ended up with the books. The friend’s family has been enquiring as to what happened to the collection. This is just kind of a random good deed that we’re looking into. Forumites of 1999 – 2000, do you remember a 1000 book donation? If you know anything, just post about it and we’ll get into contact with Richard.

AC Report: We got some of the DVDs we ordered in – but we’re still waiting for on some others (like the Complete Hercules and Brisco County Jr). We have a price range for one of the limited allocations we made last week. Unfortunately, we can’t get the Doctor Who version of Scene It?, because even if we wanted to deal with the DVD not being Region 1, it doesn’t matter anyway because it isn’t being sold on Amazon. But we’re getting Harry Potter Scene It? and Star Trek Scene It?. The allocation is now exactly $60.55. I’ll be making a reallocation for Festivus later. It would be great to know how many people are planning on coming to Festivus as there hasn’t been much talk about it on the boards. We’re hoping to see more alumni this year.

I have given Holly permission to run a cleaning event. She’ll be bringing in a vacuum and so help me Forumites, you will show up!

Adib: The good news is we have a room to do bi-weekly movie nights. The bad news is, all we have is an projector. We have no speakers, no DVD player, and no screen. So “Candy from Strangers” night had to be postponed. I have already picked out a theme for the next movie night: “Therapy is Useless When You’re Mindfucked.”

Sub AC for Life (Everyone): Get well soon! We miss you, Drow!

Historian’s Report: Alternate Universe #617 – “The Rule of Ian the Terrible”

Committees
PR: We have a website. Come to our club, please. We like you.

Fundraising: The Peter’s Hat Committee is great success!

Old Business
Ian: I would like to make a reallocation for food for Festivus from Quiznos for $164.98 – it’s $14.98 more than we allocated for last time. Seconded. Acclimated.

Lukas: Clean. Shelve. Cleave.

New Business
None!

Announcements
Phil: Doctor Who: Waters of Mars. This Sunday.

Meeting closed at 8:57 PM

CONSTITUTION CHANGE VOTE
Jackie: In order to have a budget, we need to change our constitution to say that “members” of our club are people who are members of the undergraduate student government (which includes all people who undergraduate student activity fees). I know some of you were asking if you can pay the student activity fee and then vote… and we’re looking into it, HOWEVER you could spend your money in better ways – donate to us!

Ian: These definitions are for the sake of USG only. This only applies to voting for budgetary matters and possibly for voting for signatory officers (we’re looking into that).

Jackie: We love you! You can take out our books, you can attend our events and eat our food. We just don’t want USG to cut our budget… again.

Candy From Strangers POSTPONED [Nov. 11th, 2009|07:33 pm]

adibrah
We were given a room and an LCD projector. No dvd player, speakers or screen. As such, movie night is postponed until these details have been ironed out. I was thinking we can try and reserve a portable screen and perhaps speakers. I can use my PS2 to play the movies.
Any ideas?

Movie Night: Candy From Strangers [Nov. 6th, 2009|01:21 pm]

adibrah
...and you don't get much stranger than Willy Wonka, Oompa Loompas, and 4Mites. We will be showing Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory followed by Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. We will also provide a cauldron full of free candy during the movies to satisfy your sugar cravings. So come on down and watch some movies about candy while you indulge. I'd say that's a pretty sweet deal.

Where: Stony Brook Union. Room 247.
When: Wednesday, November 11. 7:00 PM - 11:30 PM

See you there!

Meeting called to order at 8:31 PM

President’s Report: We talked to Victor and we looked at the footage. We have some leads but nothing conclusive. The contractors are supposed to dispose of the door because of the asbestos, if they don’t campus is libel. Don’t give us a hard time if you don’t think campus is going to do anything. Either way, it makes us look bad. We need campus’s cooperation to get things fixed with our current room, so we want to stay in their good graces. If you have the door, give it back. PLEASE.

Vice President’s Report: I met with Maria and scheduled Festivus. Sorry for those of you who don’t like the date, but it’s going to be Saturday, December 5th in Union room 236 from 12:00 – 6:00 PM. Clean.

Treasurer’s Report: The allocation for the DVDs from last week went through.

Secretary’s Report: This is really more AC business but… I’ll be doing a Best of Dr. Rodney McKay marathon this Tuesday (November 10th) from around 12:00 to 5:00.

Librarian’s Report: We have the library computer set up, this is good news. The bad news is that ResourceMate has expired and we’re not paying for the renewal. Aaron is working on something for us with a base from open source catalogue software. He said he’d get it up next week. We might actually use the old catalogue (after cards but before Kingbird’s Betrayal – we love you, Kingbird!) in the meantime.
Howie: Kingbird is a great guy. He has lovely plumage.

AC Report: Your evil ACs are planning on spending your money again this week. I’ll be making allocations later.

Final Fantasy IX is thankfully done. There will be no video games until at least next Thursday. I want at least a week break, at which point it’ll probably be first come first serve as to what we play next.

Once we get Hercules in, Peter will be running a Hercules marathon.

When Adib was Head AC, he secured a room for us every other week so we could run movie nights. The first one will Wednesday, November 11th from 7:00 to 11:30pm. Not sure of the theme yet.

Festivus – feats of strength, airing of grievances. The Forum will probably be open at least an hour before hand so old Forumites can come check it out.

Thanks to Holly for bringing us a garbage can!

Howie: The Pinky and the Brain marathon I was planning didn’t happen, but I’m thinking of doing it next Thursday.

Lukas: Last week, Holly mentioned the idea of doing a Festivus gift exchange. If you’re interested in participating, bring a gift to Festivus ($5 – 10 price limit).

Sub AC for Life: Not present.

Historian’s Report (Lisa): *The Tale of the Forum Halloween Rave*
WE HAVE A WEBSITE, DAMMIT. It’s: SF4M.org. Use it!

Committees
PR: I guess we’ll make posters for Festivus?

Fundraising (Peter’s Hat Committee): “If there’s a peso in there… give it back.” - Lisa

Old Business
Peter: Shelve!

Lukas: Clean!

Howie: Cleave!

Phil: Grapple!

Jackie: Constitution change reminder! … that’ll be happening next week.

New Business
Ian: I would like to allocate no greater than $150 to Quiznos for food for Festivus. This will accommodate vegetarians, but the vegans can fend for themselves. Seconded. Acclimated.

I would also like to make an allocation for no more than $100 (I don’t know the exact prices right now, but just to be on the safe side) to get us more board games, particularly: “Doctor Who Scene It?” and “Star Trek Scene It?”. Seconded. Acclimated.

Announcements
Ian: Historian! Where are you? We miss you!

Steph: Thursday night I’m starting Nerf Night. Campus security is perfectly fine with it.

Peter: The hat continues to rake in cash!

Lisa: … timing!

Meeting notes: October 29th, 2009 [Oct. 29th, 2009|10:15 pm]

Meeting called to order at 8:29:30 PM

President’s Report (Jackie): Our President isn’t here to-night, he’s at a conference in D.C.

Holly: Lukas said that he got an e-mail from USG saying that they’ll be dealing with the phone situation on [November] 22nd.

Vice President’s Report: CLEAN. The chair sitting outside of the Forum is not a garbage can. If you really want to throw out your garbage without going upstairs, take it down the hall to the bathrooms. I spoke to Pedro about the access list and it should be updated by next week.

We all know about the door. I met with Victor earlier this week to have him look over his security tapes. The university isn’t so much mad because someone took a door, but because they wanted to dispose the door because IT IS INSULATED WITH ASBESTOS. There are specific regulations about the disposal of asbestos and now there is asbestos that is unaccounted for.

Ian: Campus believes this was done by our club. We are going to take the blame for this if the door doesn’t come back. WHOEVER TOOK THE DOOR, PLEASE BRING IT BACK. This could screw over the club whose memories you are trying to preserve!

Treasurer’s Report (Former Treasurer Peter): Hi!

Secretary’s Report: Everything I want to say will get covered under other stuff. Moving on!

Librarian’s Report (Holly): All of this comes from Lukas via e-mail: There are instructions about further unpacking of the library up on the Forum LiveJournal, so if you want to help you should check it out. We are hoping to get the library computer set up soon and that’s all dependant on Aaron (Phil, chimes in: Aaron says he’s working on it). I want to thank Tall Andrew for getting back to me.

AC Report: I’ll be making an allocation later. Yesterday was our Halloween event, I’m not sure exactly how to rate it. I see people here that I saw at the Halloween event and never before, so that’s good. It didn’t go as smoothly as it did last year. Festivus is in the works. The current date being talked about among the officers is Saturday, December 5th. That date is not confirmed yet, so don’t start cancelling things but try not to schedule anything else for that day. We would love to see as many alumni as are capable of showing up.

Jackie: It should be noted that we’re officially not allowed to do events after the last day of classes (e.g. Reading Day). We never had a problem before because we didn’t have to book a room, but now we do.

Ian: FFIX is almost done. I would like there to be more boxes unpacked before we start another game.

Roman: Tuesday at 2:30 we will continue the reading of “The Shadow God” by: Aaron Rayburn.

Sub AC for Life: (not present)

Historian’s Report (Jackie): Once upon a time we were in Harriman. There were four doors. Now there are only three.

Committees
Ian Committee: Still does not exist.

PR: There were flyers for Halloween. They were good.

Fundraising: Peter’s hat is still an effective method of fundraising!

Old Business
Jackie: We have a website. Clean.

Peter: Shelve.
Roman: If you have time to play Final Fantasy IX, you have time to shelve!
Ian: … but if you can’t properly alphabetise… play FF IX.

Roman: Phil’s mother.

New Business
Ian: I would like to make an allocation of $330.38 to Amazon.com to get us more TV series. These series are: Doctor Who, Season 4; Sarah Jane Adventures, Season 1; Complete Hercules; Complete Bristol County Jr.; Complete Jack of All Trades; and True Blood, Season 1. Motion Passes.

Jackie: I got an e-mail from Maria on Wednesday morning saying: “In the interest of maintaining your USG budget, I would update your constitution a little bit. It seems fine as it is but in the membership clause you mention that the club is open to everyone. I would add somewhere in there that ‘only those individuals paying the Undergraduate Student Activities Fee can vote on matters pertaining to the budget.’” We need to make a constitutional change. Anyone is allowed to attend our events and use our library but they can’t be “members” unless they are people who pay the undergraduate student activity fee. We’ll figure out the exact wording of the proposed change later. We love older Forumites and we don’t want to push them away! This is just so we can keep being a club and getting USG funds.

Announcements
Holly: Lukas and I were talking about doing some sort of gift-exchange at Festivus… just something to think about.

Jackie: ROMAN, PUT THE TABLE DOWN!

Roman: One: Fuck, Cablevision and their shit – for serious. They made me punch through me wall. Two: Glee is awesome. Watch it.

Phil: Heroes might get cancelled.

Ian: This does not apply to people who normally can’t make it or those who may have had exams this evening, but… we almost didn’t have quorum for meeting to-night! Your officers, who schedule their time to be here, don’t like the thought of coming here and not being able to have meeting. Show up to fucking meeting if you want things to happen!

Halloween Event [Oct. 26th, 2009|11:00 am]

alwaysbored89
We are having a super awesome Halloween shindig and you should come! It's Wednesday, October 28th at 7:30 PM in the union auditorium. Costume contests, candy, jeopardy, movies, and so much fun! Be there, or be square!!

Edit: I've run through my print quota for the day for classes, but if anyone wants to print fliers for it, I made a B&W of this that looks a bit better than just printing this in a B&W printer. If you post them, please get the proper permissions first (I believe you have to go to the SAC to get them to stamp approval for posting in both the SAC and the Union).

Link for the B&W is here.

Moving Status [Oct. 25th, 2009|10:37 pm]

sekar_pryors

This is your presarian here!

Things are ridiculous.

The Champions:
David – who was my Gandalf & peeps to an overnight struggle at Helm’s Deep.
Adel (spelling?)
Peter
Dan

Everyone who showed up was very helpful.

The good news is that we managed to shift and crunch and de-box books so well together that we have acquired 1X: Computer Desk Space + Chair.

I sat in that chair for about three minutes, feeling totally BOSS.

I IMed Aaron briefly, and he told me that he’s going to set up the computer sometime Monday or Tuesday – and then next week install that secret bomber catalogue he has been prepping up for the forum (i.e. the one we bragged about during the 40th), but for now:

ResourceMate is going to try to hustle us for a subscription fee -- $75. I’m not paying for it, especially when its projected use will be about a week. So there was some talk about using the old catalogue system, Readerware while using the catalogue and cards for checking in-and-out books. I’m not sure when Aaron is going to be there, but any old shiftholders from last year should remember the drill if someone wants to check out something – and if they don’t, feel free to contact me.

I’m very pumped about running back to normal.

As for the moving situation, we did not really get a heavy amount of shiftshifting done, but I think we were moving around J-K to their edge. People should continue in reverse-alphabetical order if they feel up to the task, and then shelve ONLY MAIN STACKS. I tried to make it easy by having the authors who fit into the early alphabet on the front of the huge bookpile up.

So if you’re shelving, focus on that.

Here’s a MSPaint map of the forum, so you can get a better idea of what's going on:

EDIT: We may still need some shelves for the forum. If anyone is interesting in hooking us with a good deal, forward me the details and I'll see what can be done. Thanks so much. =)

DOUBLE EDIT: We do have some additional shelves from Harriman Hall saved over, as Phil said, and they will help. I'm still am unsure if they'll take up all the space as needed, but I think they'll perform wonderfully in the ideal perfect futureForum.

Meeting called to order at 8:30 PM

President’s Report: As some of you may have already heard, someone stole one of the library doors from the old Forum. Victor has a security camera set up in that hallway and I’ve been trying to get in touch with him. Campus is pissed - but not at the Forum. We’re working on getting the situation sorted out. On that note, if people want to do side projects, come to me first and let me know about it, you’re allowed to do your vigilante work for the Forum but I would appreciate a heads up. I contacted USG about getting the Forum a phone, which I think is important especially since most cell phones get no reception down there; hopefully we’ll have a phone set up soon. I will not be here next week, so either Roman or Jackie can run meeting.

Vice President’s Report (Lisa): I’m Jackie, I have been kidnapped by Lisa!

Treasurer’s Report: Apparently our budget has been frozen…

Secretary’s Report: I actually know quite a lot about the budget situation. There was some sort of USG leadership conference that we were unaware of. With the shuffling of officers we’ve had going on lately, we weren’t made aware of it. I sent an e-mail to the VP of Clubs at USG…

Jackie: I actually got in contact with her and she said that our budget should be fine and we’re working on resolving the situation.

Librarian’s Report: If you put any work into the library thank you very much, I appreciate it. Thanks to Sam and Kingbird for getting back to me. Response on LiveJournal has been kind of lukewarm about the shelving event… but I’ll be coming down at 1:00 PM this Sunday (October 25th) and we’ll go as long as people are willing to get work done (The Union is open on Sunday until (9:00 PM).

AC Report: Various ACs have been running events – and while I 98% trust all of your judgements, I would still like to get a heads up that you’re doing something. Spur of the moment movie nights are fine though.

Seeing as it’ll be a bit before the library will be able to make any strong expenditures into our budget, I’m going to be making a DVD allocation shortly after Halloween. I haven’t decided whether I’ll be going for series or movies, but I think we get a lot more use out of series. If you have any preferences, give me suggestions. I’m leaning toward getting some more fantasy stuff because we’ve built up our sci-fi and horror collection a lot more recently.

We still need cheap and effective prizes for Halloween! Peter is thankfully donating a copy of “Species.” … I’m shooting for four prizes, one for jeopardy, three for the costume contest. Team effort here! A big thanks to our treasurer for donating a copy of House on Haunted Hill for us to show at Halloween.

The cleanliness of the Forum is progressively getting worse.

Roman: I’m usually the first one down in the Forum in the morning. When I get there it’s usually fucking disgusting. Don’t leave open cans of half full drinks. Don’t make us have to ban food and drink in the Forum.

Howie: On a positive note, we’re getting garbage cans.

Phil: I’d like to run a marathon of “Middle Man” on Monday.

Sub AC for Life: We have new movies. I decided I would find the worst movies I could possibly think of. I have now upgraded “Barbarella” to DVD, I also got “Ed Wood,” and “Plan 9 from Outer Space.” We still don’t have a video cabinet…

Historian’s Report: The Origin of the Vice President calling “CLEAN!” – Back in the time of Setsu the Enforcer, the Forum lounge in Harriman had become disgusting; we had a stained carpet and we had also attracted horrible vermin (we actually found a mummified rat in the video cabinet) and we were also attracting fruit flies. The smell was disgusting to the point where no one wanted to go into the lounge. As a result, we ripped out all of the carpets and did a lot of cleaning in the Forum and ever since then the Vice President has taken great care to call out “CLEAN!” to remind all of you Forumites to CLEAN UP YOUR SHIT.

Committees
PR: I made a really awesome poster, but it doesn’t look good in black and white, so I need to make another one.

Fundraising: Passing Peter’s hat around is an effective means of fundraising!

Old Business
Drow: Have we decided what we’re going with the DVDs yet?
Lukas: Peter suggested that we put the DVDs in a binder and keep them locked in the filing cabinet and we leave the DVD boxes out on shelves.

CLEAN!

SHELVE!

Roman: REMINDER ABOUT THE HALLOWEEN EVENT… WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28th at 7:30 PM until around 11:00 PM in the Union Auditorium. We’re showing “House on Haunted Hill,” then we will have Science Fiction Forum Jeopardy with faaaaabulous prize(s), followed by “Blood Tide” (starring James Earl Jones) and then we will end with the costume contest.

New Business
No new business.

Announcements
Ian: WHO STEALS A FUCKING DOOR?!

Holly: To-morrow night, a few us are making a movie run to see “Astro Boy” at 10:35 at the AMC in Stony Brook. Meet in front of the Union at 9:30, I’ll be giving rides.

Lisa: Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in Center Moriches is doing a spooky walk this Friday and Saturday from 7:00 – 9:00 PM; it costs $12.

Drow: One last time… CLEAN.

Okay.. who stole the Forum doors?!

Apparently the campus called Aaron and is pissed because the doors to the Old Forum have been stolen. They were going to give us the doors when they had doors to replace them, but someone came by over the weekend and took one of them. He's looking for any information on the whereabouts of the door in question.

I'm kind of pissed off too. They were part of our history and it sucks that some random person on campus just came by and took it. And were able to carry it off campus without any of the security noticing. Very sad.

EVENT [Oct. 19th, 2009|08:14 am]

sekar_pryors
SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY

As annouced during meeting, I planned to have a major shelving/library day, in an attempt to get the entire library functioning again. It shall happen this upcoming sunday, the 25th of October. I will get there probably around 1pm (it's obviously dependent on what time I go to bed Saturday), but if you're awake, and haunted by the idea that the library is a mess, then feel free to come in sooner. We shall keep going until whatever time we decide to stop.

We're going to be making some space on the shelves, and then going to try to fit on as many doubles as we possibly can.

I'm sure we could put on some good music, or a t.v. program, or have a diner run or movie run right afterwards.

If you plan on making it, I'd like to know ahead of time.

Meeting notes: October 15th, 2009 [Oct. 15th, 2009|10:23 pm]

hoskie
Meeting called to order at 8:30 PM

President’s Report: Hi. I’m your president. I haven’t done much yet, but I’ll do as much as I can and pass the rest off to Roman. I’m going away this weekend…
Adib: Who are you, George Bush? … going on vacation already?!

Vice President’s Report: The Halloween event is going to be October 28th (the Wednesday before Halloween). It’s going to be in the Union auditorium like it was last year.

Treasurer’s Report (Peter): I talked with Matt Anderson, our budget thing was submitted smoothly, but we haven’t gotten a hearing yet.

Secretary’s Report: I was sick last week. Thanks to Phil for taking the minutes. I’ve got something for later.

ALL HAIL THE PRESARIAN!
Librarian’s Report: Thanks for doing work in the library, it’s very appreciated. Keep doing what you’re doing.

(followed by a prolonged discussion about the benefits and problems of shelving the double copies)

Possible EPIC SHELF SHIFTING on October 25th (Sunday).

AC Report: We have been able to get some of our AV equipment up and functional and we’ve had a few marathons already. I would really like to find our board games again and I would also like to have us build our collection of genre related board games. We still need to figure out what to do with the DVDs… it all depends on how secure we think our DVDs need to be. We could just start shelving them on the available shelves on the TV cabinet OR we could try to allocate for some kind of unit. We’re going to start looking at prices.

Roman: I would like to start up dramatic readings again. … we still haven’t finished “The Shadow God” by Aaron Rayburn!

Phil: Anyone can come in and play our group Final Fantasy IX game, it’s file save #2 on the memory card. We just moved onto disc 2. Please share, don’t hog the system!
Ian: It should be noted that DVDs trump video games. … but be courteous either way.

Peter: Next Thursday at noon, I’ll be running a Buffy marathon.

Sub AC for Life: I’m pleased that we have a working TV, but I’m not pleased that we don’t have a place to put the DVDs.

Historian’s Report: *the rise and demise of the D6 gaming club*

Committees
Ian Committee: Does not exist.

PR: We’ll make fliers for the Halloween event.

Fundraising: *coins were thrown*

Old Business
Ian: At the Halloween event, we’ll be showing “Blood Tide” with James Earl Jones and we’re hoping to also show the original “House on Haunted Hill” which is thankfully in the public domain. Again, the event is the 28th, set up begins at 7:00, event begins at 7:30. We’ll be showing the first movie and in between will be the Forum Jeopardy run by Roman…

Roman: I’ve fixed all of the glitches we had last year. In addition to that, at last year’s event we just had people banging on the table to buzz in… but this year we will actually have buzzers and a timer system.

Ian: We pre-emptively allocated $75 to BJ’s last week for candy. There will be prizes for both the costume contest and the jeopardy game – we’re trying to get free things.

Jackie: Clean.

Peter: Shelve.

Roman: Phil’s mom.

New Business
Mo: I’m creating a science fiction podcast and I think it would be cool if some Forum people would participate, so talk to me about it if you’re interested.

Announcements
Hoskie: Someone came by the other day and dropped off a bunch fliers for an event that’s happening at the Staller Center that’s sci-fi related. The L.A. Theatre Works is putting on a recreation of both “War of the Worlds” and “The Lost World” radio broadcasts. The show is October 30th at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $34 but provided it doesn’t sell out there will be rush tickets for $7 (I think the rush tickets might be students only, but I could be wrong). You can read more about the event at stallercenter.com

Hi all,

For those who don't know, there is now a TV set up in the Forum lounge (already set up, no need to come in tomorrow Phil), so Red Dwarf marathon is a go for Monday starting at 10 AM and lasting probably the whole day so long as your head AC and Secretary don't explode from the level of awesome this series contains. See you all then!

Meeting Notes for 10/8/09 [Oct. 8th, 2009|09:29 pm]

nekonaru_letao
Meeting
Silence! The meeting is called to order at precisely 8:30.
President: This will be my last night as President. I know it saddens you all.
Vice President: Clean. I've got a meeting with Maria in regards to Halloween, with Ian in tow. Unpack stuff too.
Treasurer: I am no longer an officer. That makes me very very sad.
Secretary: Hoskie's sick.
Secretary-by-proxy, via Ian: Fuck the letter 'S'. We found another 'S' box.
Librarian: Lukas has a red hat! Thank you to those who've been shelving. Shiftholder schedules are still available to fill out, if you'd like. However, any help is appreciated. We hope to open soon! As a reminder, Aaron is SysAdmin.
Head AC: Yesterday, I rearranged boxes in front of the TV stand to make room for the TV, that will hopefully arrive soon. Someone needs to help Adib bring the TV here, specifically with someone with a large enough car to fit it. Tentatively, Jackie will be helping Adib move the TV. The first event after the TV is hooked up will be a Red Dwarf marathon. We will post to the Yahoo group about that. It may be on Monday!

Halloween! As Jackie mentioned, there's a meeting with Maria tomorrow to get a room, hopefully for Wednesday, October 28th! We will have a conditional allocation under the idea that we will be having an event, so that we can get supplies in time. No matter what, it will not be on Halloween proper.

It has come to my attention that people who haven't seen Star Wars should be subjected to the Christmas Special. NO! We have no copies, nor do we want anyone's! There is NO reason to subject ANYONE to this special, let alone NEW PEOPLE that WE WANT TO STAY AROUND.
Lisa: What about Zardoz?
Ian: NO!
Sub AC for Life: Get the DVDs unpacked so I can check them, dammit!
Historian: A discussion about having a GPA requirement for signatories is had, with shenanigans called by Drow on having a requirement.
Committees:
Ian Committee: Does Not Exist
Advertising: A reunion with a former Advertiser, Lisa.
Fundraising: We need a fundraiser.
Old Business:
Jackie: Clean!
Roman: Silence!
Ian: So the VPs and the ACs, since Lisa and Bobby, have taken up the task of keeping the library and lounge clean. Though, at Harriman, it would be impossible to get completely clean. The Union is different. Carpet is harder to clean, but still more cleanable than Harriman. When you bring down food, throw out the plates and such! We need to keep the space clean! We do not want Fluffies! We have a garbage can and recycling bin! USE THEM! FYI: Fluffies are a race of super-roaches that used to live in Harriman, supposedly spawned from a Bio lab that lost its funding. So, in short, CLEAN!!!
Phillip: We have a website, and a twitter.
New Business:
Ian: I motion to allocate $75 to BJs for candy for our Halloween event. Motion seconded, acclimated, and passed.
Announcements:
Holly: Big Apple Comic-Con is October 16-18th, and William Shatner is amongst the many guests.
Jackie: I-Con is back at Stony Brook! Yay!
Adib: On Halloween night, the Misfits are playing at B.B. King's.
Lukas: Howie was a great DM during our game! Everyone agrees.
Roman: According to some guy overheard on the way to the SAC, Heroes is now "Zombie Sylar!"
Meeting closed at 8:58.

Nominations
Vest Paul is nominated for President and Treasurer.
Pete is nominated for Treasurer.
President: Vest Paul, Lukas, Brian
Treasurer: Lukas, Aaron Erin, Vest Paul, Pete

Elections
President: Lukas is now our Presarian!
Treasurer: Pete is now our Treasurer!

J.R.R. TOLKIEN MANUSCRIPT EXHIBIT AT
FORDHAM UNIVERSITY’S LIBRARY AT LINCOLN CENTER CAMPUS

October 5 – November 19,
2009

Literary manuscripts from Marquette University’s renowned J.R.R. Tolkien
Collection will be exhibited this fall at Fordham’s Gerald M. Quinn
Library at Lincoln Center. The partnering academic libraries, both
Jesuit institutions, are pleased to present “The Beginnings of a
Masterpiece: Original Manuscripts from The Fellowship of the Ring.”

Scheduled for October 5–November 19, the exhibit marks the first time
that the literary manuscripts have been exhibited in New York City.

Select items will be featured in the exhibition at the Quinn Library.
The complete manuscripts for The Lord of the Rings, written by J.R.R.
Tolkien between 1938-1955, contain more than 9,250 pages. Some
highlights featured in the Fordham exhibition will include drawings and
sketches, maps and calendars of Middle-earth, linguistic notes about the
author’s invented languages, Hobbit family genealogies, detailed time
schemes and other plot notes, and examples of Tolkien's finest
calligraphy. The original documents reflect an extraordinary creative
process; as many as 18 drafts exist for some chapters.

Marquette University Libraries preserves the manuscripts and working
drafts for three of J.R.R. Tolkien’s most celebrated books, The Hobbit
(1937), Farmer Giles of Ham (1949), and The Lord of the Rings
(1954-1955), as well as the original copy of the illustrated children's
book Mr. Bliss. The acquisition of the manuscripts was the brainchild
of then Marquette library director William B. Ready (1914-1981). Ready
recognized The Lord of the Rings as a work of genius and negotiated to
purchase the Oxford professor’s papers. Tolkien's personal and academic
papers, as well as his other literary manuscripts, including The
Silmarillion, are preserved by Oxford University.

"The Beginnings of a Masterpiece" is free. Located on the first floor
of the Lowenstein Building at 113 West 60th Street, the Quinn Library
will be open to visitors between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, Monday through
Saturday and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, Sunday. All visitors will be asked to
show a valid photo ID to enter the Lowenstein Building and the Quinn
Library.

Marquette University Libraries' Tolkien Archives Fund, established in
1987 by the late Richard E. Blackwelder and expanded by numerous
enthusiasts, is sponsoring the manuscript exhibition.

Zombieland Movie Run Oct 3rd (you know, tonight)! [Oct. 3rd, 2009|12:47 am]

silentbob12
Greetings all:

Your officer for life (current position:head AC), would like to inform you that there will be a movie run to see Zombieland tonight (Oct 3rd) at 8:30 PM at the Stony Brook AMC theatre. For new people, while everyone is left to their own devices to gain their own tickets, rides can be provided (from campus at least) if needed. On that note, I and hopefully others should be down at the Forum from at least 5:00 so alumni visiting for homecoming can come see the Forum, so feel free to come down there if you need a ride (I imagine we will leave between 6:30 and 7 for dinner purposes). Hope to see you all tomorrow!
