A Little Something From One Of The Theater Managers
Hello all! I'm new to the comm, and I've been looking for a reason to post something, and finally found something good. I went to the May screening in Phoenix and loved it, and I've been posting in my LJ a bit about how great the BDM is. Well, it turns out that one of the people on my Flist is a manager at one of the theaters for the 6/23 screening. She's not in the fandom, but she has several Friends who are, so she knows a little bit about it just from reading posts.
Last night (or very early this morning, depending on your POV), she posted the following to her LJ. Her journal is flocked, so I asked her if I had permission to repost what she said here. I promised to keep her anonymous and not reveal the name of her theater, unless she tells me that it is okay to share that info. I will tell you that it's one of the new cities that were added for this round, and she's not in Canada.
I <333 fandom...
Even if I only know maybe five things about this particular one.
14 hours at work. I think I might have some feeling in my right baby toe, but as I cannot bend over to check, this has yet to be proven.
So, last night I heard about the 35 cities that would be screening Serenity on the 23rd. My city, and my theater, being one of them, I was annoyed at not being informed of this, since these things require some prep time, but apparently it was the Special Event screening memo that I did see and promptly forgot about. Still, I wasn't especially worried, since fandom-type cool things aren't exactly a regular occurrence around here. I figured it would sell well, at a fairly steady pace, similar to maybe the third or fourth SW: Episode III midnight shows we had last month (Ended up with seven screens showing in the end, that one.)
Yeah, not so much.
Phone rang off the hook all morning. Easily over a hundred calls. Once the ticket options were uploaded into our system and on the internet, the screening sold out in a little over a minute and a half. I'm told 30 cities sold out before our availability even went up and that Atlanta sold out in about 45 seconds.
Once everyone had their assignments for the day, I spent most of the morning answering the phone myself because, well, it was fun. We don't normally have that kind of reaction from that type of fandom around here, this city's just not cool enough. But people were calling from all over the place (by the 20th or so phone call it was more of a "Hi, uh, I'm calling about a screening for--" "Serenity, right? Yeah, okay, here's the deal...") and I knew enough, thanks to my flist, that I could chat with them, about the previous screenings and the fanbase and such. It was very cool. Fandom is fandom, regardless of what the subject is, and it's fun to feel that click when you're talking to someone else who just gets it. Everyone at work was mostly very "WTF?" and the best I could come up with was something like, "Yeah... this is actually normal. Welcome to the dark side."
So, yes. I was going to see it anyway, but anything that manages to make a day at work that enjoyable definitely gets bumped up on the list. Even if it did make me too tired to screen Mr. & Mrs. Smith. And that's saying something.
FYI, she is now pretty excited about seeing the movie, and I've asked her to let me know what she thinks. I'll ask if it's okay to post her reactions after the screening, or maybe get her to join here and post them herself. She's certainly fandom-susceptible, so I think we may have ourselves another Browncoat once she sees it!
