This week's challenge is embers.

There is still time to squeeze out a drabble or a ficlet for the Mongoose Moonridge Challenge. The very excellent Hanarobi has sent me a story (and thank you so much) so it's not like other contributions would be lonely or anything. :-)

Title: Do It Yourself!
Author: Roslyn
Content: Gen ficlet (255 words), no warnings
Thanks Arianna for the beta!

“Nice choice of restaurant, Sandburg. Classy, too. Which means you may want to take your elbows off the table. Jim? Do these clams seem okay to you?”

“Yeah, they seem fine. Uh, Simon? You do realize that I can't really smell red tide or algae, if you're looking for anything besides common spoilage, right?”

“Gotcha. No, I'm not worried about the pollution issue. These aren't east coast clams, anyway.”

“Oh, man! You aren't kidding! Those warnings out from Boston and places, about their catches? I swear those are enough to put you off seafood for the rest of your -”

“Blair! I'm trying to eat seafood even as we speak. May I do so in peace?”

“Right. Sorry, Simon. Uh, Jim, this cottage cheese okay? And the salad, any sulfites or preservatives on it? Maybe you should taste it.”

“Seems fine, Chief.”

“My clams taste really good here. Oh, how's the cream for the iced coffee, by the way? Uh, Jim? What's up? You heading for the rest room?”

“Jim? Why are you standing there staring at us. The other patrons are starting to notice. Your senses spiking or something?”

“No, there's nothing wrong with my senses. But both of you appear to have completely lost your own. Not just common sense, either. When did I become the guardian of your sensory experiences? You know how spoiled food tastes and smells. You've been recognizing it all your lives before I came along. You ever hear of 'use it or lose it'? Guys. Do. It. Yourselves!”

This weekend is Moonridge (a place where I will *not* be, alas) which is a good cue to remind people that there is still time to write a little something, even a drabble or ficlet, for a possible Sentinel Thursday contribution to My Mongoose Ezine. Check out the link for more info.

Challenge #294 Alpha Male

Jun. 13th, 2009 | 03:05 am
posted by: [info]roslynsmuse in [info]sentinel_thurs

Title: "Please Don't Tease the Alphas"
Author: Roslyn
Notes: Gen double drabble; no warnings

“Are you feeling okay, Chief?”

“Sure, Jim. Why wouldn't I be okay?”

“You haven't said a word in over an hour. I figured that either you were sick or my hearing was on the fritz.”

“The only thing that's sick around here is your sense of humor. Now, leave me alone. I wanna finish reading this paper about you.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I'm reading a paper about some of your characteristics. This is an article by a primatologist named Frans de Waal.”

“Are you calling me a monkey, Darwin? And you do know that Darwin is dead, right? One of his subjects undoubtedly killed him.”

“There's a new bag of barbecue chips in the pantry.”

“Great! Have you ever noticed how you offer me junk food whenever I threaten to kill you?”

“Just being a good alpha male here.”

“I thought the alphas did the threatening.”

“Not the successful ones, apparently. According to de Waal the most successful males are the peacemaker types who serve to reduce violence among the group.”

“Lovers, not fighters, eh?”

“You've got it. So, let's satisfy that inner alpha hunger. Hey, don't look so worried. I was just hoping you'd pass the chips.”

This week's challenge is alpha male.

I'm surprised that this hasn't been used before to be honest but if my eyes are deceiving me, recycling is good, right?

Which leads comfortably to a reminder that if people want to contribute to My Mongoose Ezine's Moonridge edition, with its recycling theme, then time is running out. More details like deadlines and so forth are here in the Mongoose Challenge entry
