This is a Livejournal community dedicated to the discussion of SEGA: the games, the hardware, the company, and the individuals behind it all.

SEGA-AM2
A team comprised of the development staff from AM2 (Shenmue, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop) and former CSK subsidiary CRI (Aero Dancing, Buggy Heat). Current focus is on the production of software to satisfy the hardcore gamer.

Amusement Vision
Formerly known as AM4, Amusement Vision is relatively new as a development studio. Previously, they were responsible for most of Sega's hardware development. More recently, AV has become one of Sega's more prominent studios, with strong ties to Nintendo and some of Sega's more profitable developments (Super Monkey Ball, Daytona USA, F-Zero GC/AC).

Hitmaker
Formerly known as AM3, Hitmaker is one of Sega's more powerful studios, responsible for such games as Crazy Taxi, Virtual On, and Virtua Tennis Later this year, Hitmaker is set to wholly absorb former AM5 Sega Rosso (Sega Rally, Initial-D: Arcade Stage, Star Wars Trilogy Arcade). In Sega's reorganized studio plan, Hitmaker is to be responsible for the development of new, experimental types of videogame, for all platforms.

Sonic Team
Formerly designated AM8, Sonic Team have been responsible for some of Sega's biggest mass-market successes (Sonic the Hedgehog, NiGHTS, Phantasy Star Online). Later this year, Sonic Team is set to wholly absorb former AM9 United Game Artists (Space Channel 5, Rez; also known as AM Annex). Responsible for the production of software for the casual and younger audience.

Smilebit
Former known as AM6, Smilebit has been responsible for some of Sega's quirkiest, most adventuresome games in recent years (Jet Set Radio, Panzer Dragoon Orta, GUNVALKYRIE). Unfortunately, these games have never made Sega a lot of profit -- rather, it's Smilebit's bizarre sports software which has carried them in the Japanese market. As such, it appears that this will be Smilebit's focus for the forseeable future. A number of Smilebit staff have moved to Amusement Vision, and presumably will continue their creative work there.

Sega Wow
A team comprised of the development staff from former AM1 WOW Entertainment (Sega GT, House of the Dead, Altered Beast) and former AM7 Overworks (Shinobi, Skies of Arcadia, Sakura Taisen). Dedicated to the production of games for a wide spectrum of ages.

Digitalrex
An entirely new Sega team under the direction of famed director Yu Suzuki (Space Harrier, Outrun, Afterburner), dedicated to the production of high-quality games with broad hit potential.

Wavemaster
Sega's dedicated sound team, responsible for music and utilities for most of Sega's development studios.

Visual Concepts
Sega of America's sole first-party development team, headed by Greg Thomas. Acquired in 1998. Responsible for the production and oversight of Sega's Western-styled sports series (NFL2K, NBA2K, NHL2K).

RED Entertainment
Longtime associate of Sega, acquired in 2002. Focused on products which borrow equally from the videogame and anime disciplines (Sakura Taisen, Gungrave, N.U.D.E.). The otaku market, basically.

3D-AGES
A subsidiary formed and jointly owned by SEGA and D3, dedicated to the production of inexpensive remakes of classic SEGA software (Phantasy Star - Generaion: 1, Fantasy Zone, Space Harrier).
