This community is partly for gardeners to share seed-raising, transplanting and saving tips, but mainly to swap and give away seeds that they have collected from their gardens as well as bought seeds that they have enjoyed and no longer have a use for.
About the Original Seed Savers Exchange
Seed Savers Exchange (SSE) is a nonprofit organization that is saving "heirloom" (handed-down) garden seeds from extinction. Its members grow and distribute heirloom varieties of vegetables, fruits and grains. SSE's main focus is on heirloom varieties that gardeners and farmers brought to North America when their families immigrated, and traditional varieties grown by Native Americans, Mennonites and Amish. taken from about Seeds Savers, www.seedsavers.org
This community was inspired by the original seedsavers and my overzealous lettuce plant that recently produced hundreds of seeds. I've been interested in heirloom, open-pollinated and general non-hybrid varieties of seeds for about a year now and have a modest vegie garden growing these types. They are so much tastier, disease resistant and prolific than commercial varieties.
The community icon comes from a variety of tomato called 'Black Krim', it was saved from the ruins of the Soviet Union by the Seed Savers exchange where families had been growing it for generations.
