What should we do?!
Hi Friends,

I'm here with three other 20-somethings from NYC and we are looking for some ideas for our second and last week in this lovely (not too rainy) city. We've done the touristy stuff -- pikes place, the needle, etc and we've sought out some of the neighborhoods, but we need more specifics.

So far, our favorite hangout area has been Freemont and Ballard. that type of scene. We've been to capital hill and are sort of over it. We're looking for night plans, as well as stuff to do in the daytime (including this afternoon). The free-er the better!

peace and thanks.

Birdie

ARRRRRGH! "PIKE Place" -- it's PIKE Place! Because it's at the end of PIKE, get it?

If you've done all the touristy things, you should get on a ferry and explore what's outside Seattle. Nothing in this city will impress you if you're already "over it" in a week. Go to Snoqualmie and hike up a mountain.

Seriously, what is the big fucking deal with this? It's a market at the end of Pike Street. It would not technically be incorrect for a business on Pike Street to call itself Pike's Place any more than a business on Smith Street would call itself Smith's Place.

It's not the name, I understand, but it's not like "Pike Place" on Pike Street is some sort of cosmic inevitability or something.

Do you have a car? If you do, your options are much better. The following are my suggestions if you are relying on feet or buses to get around.

If you're in Ballard/Fremont, head to Golden Gardens. Grab some beers on the way, or maybe sandwiches at Paseo. Drinking at the beach is illegal, but if you're reasonable with it, no one cares.

Also in Ballard are the locks. Check out the salmon at the fish ladder. If you're walkers, from the south end of the locks, walk over the pedestrian bridge and make your way to Discovery Park. Ditto the earlier beer at the beach statement.

Take the Elliott Bay Water Taxi ($1 if you have a valid bus transfer, $3 otherwise) over to Alki/West Seattle. Walk along the water and play with the sea stars. Catch the sunset out there, then take the boat back to Downtown with the city all lit up.

Not free, but the underground tour downtown is fun for people who haven't been to Seattle before (very touristy, but still interesting). I'd also suggest finding a place to rent a kayak or canoe along Lake Washington or Union if the weather is nice. There's also the International District/Chinatown--good food, Uwajimaya (grocery store of awesomeness), and good wandering-around stuff.

And the Seattle Art Museum, EMP, Seattle Public Library (to check out the building itself), University of Washington campus (and it's museums and art gallery), University Way (the "Ave) in the U-district, etc.

You're already bored with Seattle? Really? That's pretty sad.

If you're over Seattle you clearly haven't been drinking enough beer. Seattle has plenty of microbreweries and from what I hear NY is severely lacking in the beer department. Check out Maritime Pacific, Elysian, The Dray, Brouwer's (Belgiums), Hale's. The Olympic Sculpture Park is nice. This Thursday is free museum day/the Pioneer Square Art Walk. You can do your own google work to find out what museums are free.

I would second the ferry recommendations, and Golden Gardens. If you have time, it's definitely worthwhile to get out of town for a bit- go up to Orcas Island, or out to the I-90 corridor- we love hiking Twin Falls when we have visitors in town.

If you're interested- this is the itinerary I created for my parents when they came to visit. It's a little skewed towards their age group and interests (they love boating), but it might be helpful.

I see. So your non-asshole response to "What should I do in Seattle?" is "Go to Vancouver."

First Thursdays is coming up, will you be here on the 2nd?
First Thursdays is a monthly art walk held downtown, all the galleries, artists studios and art museums open their doors for free and/or have free beer or wine for consumption.

also, each little neighbor hood has their own walks at different times of the month, might be worth looking up.

Head across the 520 bridge to Medina, and ask the first little old lady you see walking a Pomeranian with a pink bow around its neck where Bill Gates' house is. You can walk right up and ring the doorbell, and frequently Bill himself (everybody around these parts is on a first-name basis with Bill) will answer the door and give you a free guided tour. Be sure to ask him about all the touch-screens on the wall, and how many cars will fit into his underground garage - he can go on for just days about that stuff!

After the tour is over, Bill will also often give you a glass of milk and a Snickerdoodle, but if he doesn't don't take it personally. Sometimes you just get an oatmeal cookie instead.
