Safeway.com delivery - how is it these days?
I Googled around a fair bit and saw 50/50 reviews, but spread out over a pretty wide time frame (2+ years?). How is it, these days? My wife and I are now on Week 6 of no car, and so far so good. But we're missing our big every 3-4 week shopping trip to the grocery store for the convenience of having stuff at home ready to go whenever (aside from being able to shoot up to the Lockspot for a beer at will, I'm not missing much else).

Safeway.com seems like the best bet, since we're not lugging 50-60 pounds of groceries on the bus. Anyone using them regularly?

Not for my zip code. :(

I did once get a "same day" delivery of a CD for them. I ordered the Battlestar Galactica score on a lark (the new BG) and this guy suddenly shows up two hours later to hand it to me. Weird.

Yep, occasionally Amazon will have it in their Seattle FC and it will come in on same-day delivery by Dynamex.

That sucks! The selection's a bit limited in some respects, but Amazon Fresh usually has better prices and better produce than Safeway does.

Safeway's okay, but their inventory control system has some issues. Their website is a lot less annoying than Albertson's is, too.

Also, I miss Homegrocer.com. And Kozmo.com. *sigh* Stupid economy.

I used to use Safeway.com regularly when I was downtown without a car. They were fantastic. It was ~2 years ago though... I've also used them once or twice since moving to Bremerton.

The delivery charge isn't so bad when you factor in your time/gas plus the fact that you aren't wandering around and picking up random crap you know you don't need. ;) They also tend to send postcards in the mail with either free or 50% delivery charge codes quite frequently.

Also worth noting: Albertson's website is the biggest pain in the ass ever to use. I refused to use their delivery service simply because of this. :\ I've had to use it once or twice though because the times I needed weren't available from Safeway, though. I hate their stupid website.

I use Safeway delivery every so often. I'll get on a kick of using it for awhile and then kind of miss going to the store so I'll go back to that. Then repeat. I've never had any problems with it. I also tried Albertsons delivery at one point but they didn't seem to have as good of a selection as Safeway did for what I usually buy.

As soon as Amazon Fresh comes to my zip code, I'll be all over that, though.

People in my complex use them, and they're fairly prompt and effective. I may start using them soon, as much as I don't care for Safeway, simply because of the convenience.

I used Safeway's delivery once or twice. The delivery charge almost seems worth paying with the price of gas these days. It's got a fairly large selection of things. I used to use it back when I had no car (about 5 months ago?) and extra money for the delivery so I wouldn't have to bus groceries and two toddlers. No fun.

It worked out well. They found my apartment building and got in ok and didn't leave the groceries outside. lol. BIG plus for them, seeing as how UPS just throws things (THROWS THINGS) over the gate...ahh, I regress. I say try it out and see. And yes, they'll mail you and e-mail coupons too every so often for 50 dollars off your next purchase, 10% off of delivery, etc. I still get them.

I've used them on and off - the last time about 3 weeks ago. Their delivery price has really gone up and even the 'free delivery' post cards are only 'free' after $150 worth of stuff and still they slap on a 'gas fee'. They missed 2 things on my last order and charged me for them anyway.

BUT having said all that... I'll still use them every once in a while, particularly when all my heavy stuff (laundry detergent, soda, kitty litter, etc) needs replenishing at the same time. I do love having it all shlepted for me.

Yes, I'm sorry. I should have mentioned that after making the annoying phone call, they did reimburse me. BUT, I was still out those two items and it was annoying.

Perhaps I'm just too used to the Roosevelt & 50th location, but I don't trust Safeway with anything perishable. I've been car free for years and swear by Flexcar/Zipcar to get the big shopping trips done.

I use them regularly and they're great. I have never had a late delivery past the 1-2 hour delivery window I pay for. I might have 1 or 2 out of stock items with each delivery, but they are not charged for and it's never really inconvenienced me. I got one bad loaf of bread (moldy), but I can forgive that for almost 3 years of good service. The veggies and meats have always been fresh.

Go to retailmenot.com and look up safeway.com coupon codes. There's a promo code right now for free delivery with a $50 min. order that is good until early August. I think there's also another free delivery one that is good for orders of $75. The promo codes used to come frequently but they have been coming out less and less lately. But for me, not carrying heavy jugs of cat litter on the bus makes the delivery charge worth it for the few times I actually have to pay for delivery.

Albertson's also has delivery and is very kickass. As far as I am concerned, those two stores have very comparable pricing.

agreed. Where I used to live I used Albertsons delivery exclusively about every 2 months since I lived barely a block from Safeway. I seemed to always get 1 or 2 items subbed though which if it was comperable I didn't mind. I may have to get Safeway delivered here where I am now since I'm not much for carrying heavy groceries. Not sure where the closest Albertsons is to me in 98125 anyhow. The only thing I really enjoy from Safeway is their sweet potato fries outstanding!

That'd probably be 130th and Aurora. They're finishing a remodel and it drives me batty (I like the Mercer Island store much better; it's near my work) but it should get better. But if you're getting delivery that's even better.

Plus, I have heard if you choose delivery you get cream of the crop produce and meat because they basically get first choice. (the personal shoppers for delivery)

i've not used the repeatedly, but i have used safeway.com's grocery delivery service fairly recently, so i thought i'd give you my impression.

the grocery selection was pretty good, the delivery was excellent and right on time, and the driver was super friendly and brought my groceries inside and placed them on the kitchen counter (a bonus i was not expecting). i was a new customer, so he explained the receipt very thoroughly (which was somewhat necessary, as i was dead-sick with the flu). as a brand new customer, they didn't charge me the delivery fee.

would i use them again? yes, if i'm sick or otherwise incapacitaed. i have a safeway less than a mile away from me, so gas and whatnot isn't too much of a concern.

I've used Safeway delivery since selling the car a few months ago. Their delivery people are great -- cheerful, even after lugging a couple of those big crates up to my third floor place. The four-hour window is a bit cheaper ($9.95 vs $12.95), but my order's always been delivered within the first two hours, and they're very responsive about refunding for any missing items (which are minimal to non-existent for me).

That said, I use them for the heavy items: beer, laundry soap, juice, milk, etc, and buy my fruits and vegetables at Top Banana or Pike Place Market because I'm picky that way.

Occasionally you might miss the thrill of browsing the aisles, scoring those impulse buys, but for sticking to a plan and not having to haul the stuff home up and the stairs, you cannot beat home delivery.

My only gripe is how many plastic bags they use. A single box of cereal in one, two boxes of tea in another, a carton of eggs in a third. That must be how they assemble an order, but still..., plus I bet they start charging for each bag come January. Guess you need to balance the convenience against the waste. They're not yet responsive to cutting back on bags.

Amazon fresh is the best IF you live IN Seattle. They just don't have the delivery area that safeway.com does. Safeway.com does a great job and I use them all the time. It saves me lots of toting things up flights of stairs and wasting time shopping when I could be doing something else.

Here's another cheer for Safeway.com. Better selection, compared to Albertsons. I haven't tried Amazon, since i"m not in their zip.

I used them quite a bit since I had a c-section delivery back in March. It's easier than lugging the baby to the store on some days, too (not to mention all those heavy baby supplies). The delivery guy brings it right into your kitchen.

Safeway is also great when you need party platters - just order them in advance.

But! Don't order ice cream from them. each time I've ordered ice cream sandwiches, they've arrived melted. Of course, a call to customer service gave me an immediate refund (with no hassle, which is awesome).
