A Warning
As I was walking to work this morning, I was a party to a very strange incident at 6th and Lenora. As always, my body was focussed on getting to work and my brain was focussed on wanting to be back home in bed. All of a sudden, a woman who was passing me stopped directly in my path, thus forcing ME to stop. She was either mid-forties or a well-worn late thirties. She was dressed like a frumpy office underling so I didn't think anything was amiss with her at first. In fact, I thought perhaps I was meant to know her. She looked directly at me and said, in a very angry tone, "Hey!". At this point, I was wracking my brain trying to figure out if I knew her and was supposed to smile and say hello or if there was some other reason she'd chosen to stop in front of me. She didn't give me much time to mull this over, however, before she SMACKED ME IN THE ARM. It wasn't painful, but it was hard enough for me to understand that it was MEANT to be painful. "RIGHT HERE!" she said through gritted teeth, and then she WALKED OFF. This whole event lasted approximately 3 seconds, so, naturally, I was left quite stunned. I spun around and shouted the first thing that came into my mind to say: "What the FUCK, lady?!". But her business with me was concluded and she wasn't going to turn around. It was then that I noticed a witness. A man on a smoke break had seen the whole event transpire. I looked at him looking at me. "What the fuck was that about?!" I said to him. "I don't know that lady. I've never seen her before in my life," I was compelled to explain. "That was scary," he said. By now she was at the end of the block, ready to cross the street. And I was left with nothing more than to continue my walk to work. Was she off to punch other unsuspecting peda-commuters in the arm? Or was I an isolated incident? Did she THINK she knew me? Mistake me for a wrongdoer? Or was I simply identified as the temporary cause of all her problems? Is she, in fact, a cleverly disguised madwoman? Or was she, up until that moment, perfectly normal? Sadly, I will be left to ponder these questions forever. I may not even recognize her if I were to see her again, unless, of course, she is still wearing that giant red bow...or she punches me again. Did anyone else see this woman? Are there any other victims to her madness on LJ?

In summary, beware of the red bow!

Could be worse. Couple weeks back my girlfriend was walking to work in Belltown in the morning and was clubbed in the back of the knees by a homeless man, knocked down, and beaten on the legs and hips while he shouted that she was a "bitch" and a "cunt." She got up, threw her coffee in his face, and ran away. Every standing around just watched.

Police are still looking for the guy.

I work on 4th between Lenora and Blanchard. I've seen this chick before. She's nucking futs. To put it simply. She has full blown arguments with herself, arguing both sides, and often loses.

Though it was hard for me to figure that out at first because I couldn't tell the difference between her and all the people on bluetooths.

To describe her as "a frumpy office underling", you may have been emitting some negative energy toward her; some energy that told her you felt superior to her. Thoughts are things.

LOL. I love it. You are, of course, completely kidding. Nice, very dry humor, presenting it as a straightforward comment. But some people actually THINK this way! "Was she asking for it." *shudder* "Emitting negative energy" as a cause for assault and battery... what a concept. New age meets blame-the-victim.

I didn't even SEE her until she was in my face. As I said, I was in my own little world until she entered it. So negative attitude toward her was formulated after she punched me.

Ah, thank you for the public service warning.

One thing I learned from working with the public, in the library, was how common it is for VERY NORMAL LOOKING people to be absolutely bonkers and even somewhat dangerous. Yes, they do sometimes come looking like housewives or office workers or nice... regular people. I've dealt with very "normal looking" people who became unhinged easily, and I was glad to have a desk between us and scissors hidden away in a drawer.

This is why I try (I know it's hard, especially when so many crazies "look normal") to keep anyone I have the slightest twinge about at a distance. Yes, people can still come up and do things in a crowd, but once someone has caught my attention as possibly dangerous, I try to keep 6 feet or so between us. I must admit, a frumpy, ordinary-looking 40-something lady would have caught me off guard, because I would have had that "oh, I should help her" response. Thanks for the reminder to be careful with that. I'll still help people, but I'll require a little more discussion before getting close. Sad, isn't it?

I hope you filed a police report for assault & battery, because it could give them exactly what they need to get this woman "help," or at least get her off the street and prevent something like this, or worse, from happening to others. If no-one files, the cops can't really do much. They can look for her and talk to her, check her for warrants, and see if she does anything weird with them, but they need complaints from actual victims to take her in. And I really do think this woman needs to be taken in. Who knows if smacking people is the worst she'd do.

There are apparently at least TWO... shall we say, unbalanced women out there randomly assaulting/pestering passersby. I was at Fourth and Pike last Friday, and a woman -- I'd peg her mid-20s, dressed unremarkably but not poorly, on the heavy side but not huge -- flipped me the bird and then shoved it into my face. Sort of like a weak ass punch. She was definitely not late 30s/mid 40s, so there's at least two of them.

I think I had almost precisely the same reaction as you. I shouted, "What the FUCK, lady??!" as she scooted down the street. Then I turned to a witness and said, "I have NEVER seen that woman before in my life!" I was convinced either she thought I was someone else, or she was crazy.

Might there be a gang of women walking around downtown, harassing people?

Yep. That is definitely not the same person. How bizarre! One is definitely compelled to explain to any witnesses that the assault was entirely un-warranted.

Lame
