I have been experiencing some lower back pain. Nothing too bad, just enough to be annoying, but I don't want to make it worse. It has been really acting up since the belly dance retreat even though I took a week off from exercise and dancing.
I have a big butt. Nothing too heavy, but it is a bubble and I think it makes me look like my posture is incorrect. I have had a few troupe members tell me (I am always in the front row) that I need to tuck my pelvis. Thing is, I am either not tucking enough or I keep coming out of my dance posture. Omis hurt and staying flat footed seems to make me uncomfortable during certain moves.
I practice yoga and that helps, but I don't think I am getting the muscles connecting my lower back to my butt loose enough. Maybe I am just stiff as hell or need to see a chiropractor. I don't remember having issues until I started belly dancing.
Any suggestions on stretches, technique or posture reminders (besides pain)?

So I am late in posting but I had to recover from the retreat and from this Memorial Day weekend. I start school tomorrow too so it seems like this month is a whirlwind of activity. ( Pics and retreat rambling )

I know this may not be a question that can be answered unless you actually see me, but I will give it a shot.
I am 5' 8" and have long arms. I have tried different placements, but sometimes I look like a huge bird compared to my smaller troupe mates. I started raising my arms higher for my solos to appear taller and lighter. When I tried it in class, my teacher told me to drop my elbows and bring my arms lower.
So are there different arm placements for every type of dance that you do? I know tribal tends to be higher extending from the shoulders and shabi tends to be lower towards the hips, but what about all the other types such as Egyptian, Lebanese and Turkish?
I know it is my expression and I can darn well have my arms placed where ever, but I am curious as to what you have to say. I mainly do Egyptian.

Anyone know of good belly dancing classes in Athens, Georgia? Or workshops in Atlanta? Atlanta is too far for me to drive on a regular basis for classes, but if there was some kind of festival I would love to be there..

Does anyone know the song from the Khaliji Album, Laylah?
Well, if you know the song, the intro is fast, then moves to slow, then picks up again. Because the vocals come in on the slow part, I use my am most expressive moves then. I also feel this is when the song really starts.
Does anyone have any creative ideas to make an entrance to this song? I am not sure if I should let it play for a while, do veil work, dance around a little, yadda . . . .
The song is really long 8 minutes, so I am trying not to run out of steam.

So I am sitting here watching some black and white footage of belly dancers such as Ra'asa Naemet Mokhtar, Zeinat Owli and Katy on YouTube.
Those costumes are phenomenal! There are combinations of fabrics and textures that I don't see in today's belly dance costumes. They could all be hideous colors for all I know, but I love the layering of the fabrics. I love the elegance. Some of the costumes had sheer mesh over the stomachs, but were cut so that you still got a flash of leg. Most of the costumes I see today seem to be cut from the same mold. I love the originality of the costumes in these films. Now, of course they had those costumes made specifically for those films and I am sure they cost a butt load, but . . .
Anyone know of a place to get vintage, elegant original costumes? I may have to suck it up and start making my own. I use to design, but I would rather design and have someone else make it.
Suggestions?

Atlanta's First Belly Dancers of Color Show
Saturday was awesome! I got my feet wet. We had a wonderful turnout at Red Light Cafe. Over 100 people and standing.
I was first. I performed an Aida Nour ballet fushion peice. J was there with me and he filmed a little of it. I must say, I am pleased with myself. I just went with the music, engaged the crowd and enjoyed myself.
I have been a little stage shy and have been procrasting on getting my choreo together. This experience has really lit a fire under me. After seeing all the beautiful women perfom after me, I really want to work on my own artistic expression.
Can't wait to do it again!
