Two actors on ABC’s popular soap opera, General Hospital, have made an especially lasting impression on fans since they began sharing airtime in late 2005. One is a rookie, the other a veteran, and they have earned a significant following.
Actors Jason Thompson and Kimberly McCullough portray Dr. Patrick Drake and Dr. Robin Scorpio on the long-running soap. Fans are connected to this couple in an intimate way and the buzz about them continues to grow.
As someone who rushed home from school to tune in to GH in the 80’s (Rick Springfield as Dr. Noah Drake had me hooked!), I understand the connection viewers have to Luke and Laura. They were a beautiful couple with amazing chemistry, and many felt that Luke and Laura were like family. My own mother still reminds me now and then that she missed Luke and Laura’s wedding because she attended one of my school functions. (Again, my apologies, Mom!).
Today, I am one of many who have the same obsession with all things Patrick and Robin.
Tried and true fans watched Robin grow up on screen, and suffered with her when her first love, Stone, died of AIDS – but not before infecting her with HIV. More than ten years later, fans now admire Robin’s strength and tenacity in the face of living with the disease.
The newcomer, Patrick Drake, is a brilliant surgeon who oozes confidence. His good looks and arrogant charm have made him the fantasy of several women on the show (luckily for us “Scrubs” fans, he only has eyes for Robin). Thompson has given depth to his character, who otherwise would be viewed as a shallow cad and quite possibly no longer on the show. He’s made Patrick, with all his flaws and womanizing, a likable character.
When Patrick and Robin interact, look out - it’s magic.
Their chemistry rivals the best couples ever on television, and the push/pull bickering and flirting between them have fans pining not only for the simplest verbal commitment of love, but for marriage and a baby. These fans, known as “Scrubbies,” have their own Internet sites, post on a wide variety of message boards (my favorite is Soapzone.com), and take their favorite couple very seriously. Several fans post video compilations of their favorite Patrick/Robin scenes on YouTube.
With the unfortunate lack of airtime this potential super couple receives, the Internet is how Scrubs fans interact and commiserate together, and make valiant attempts to reach the soap’s writers and producers to give this couple the respect they so rightly deserve.
Will Patrick and Robin become soap’s next “super couple?” Only time will tell. With the upcoming return of Genie Francis as Laura Spencer, and with her and Luke’s expected interaction with the two characters, it’s sure to be special viewing for all fans – seasoned vets and rookies. Stay tuned!
