Revised Scribe & Quill guidelines
Scribe & Quill is an established publication for writers of all experience levels and genres. Our writing resource delivers informative articles, columns, interviews, poetry, short fiction, humor, job opportunities and writing markets. Our goal is to focus on all aspects of writing, including creativity, freelancing, technique, marketing and promotion. Please be sure to read these guidelines in their entirety prior to submitting anything to Scribe & Quill. The main rules are: (1) NO attachments are accepted. Any attachments received will be intercepted and automatically deleted without being read. (2) Where noted, DO query before sending in a full submission. As a rule of thumb, DO query for articles, interviews and unassigned book reviews. There is no need to query for humor, poetry or fiction (unless your fiction piece exceeds 2,000 words). If you fail to query for items that require that you do so according to our guidelines, your submission will be deleted unread. Most writers are terrific at following guidelines, but some aren't. It's only fair that we focus on those who actually bother to read the guidelines and to follow them. If you aren't sure whether to query because of some extenuating circumstance, drop us a line and we'll let you know if a query is required. (3) S & Q accepts previously published pieces. (4) Due to the volume of submissions, please allow 30 days for a response. It is likely you won't have to wait that long, but please do not query regarding your submission until the full 30 days have passed. ( Now, on to the details! ) Current Mood: productive | 2:38 pm [elementalmuse]

Scribe & Quill - Editor's Note for 2009
Editor's Note - January 2009 Happy new year from all of us at Scribe & Quill! This past year was full of changes on both personal and professional levels. On a personal level, I got married in August. On a professional level, I stayed busy with a myriad of writing and editing jobs. The end of 2008, I added the title of writing coach to my resume. This coming year I plan to keep the momentum going on all fronts. In 2009, my fourth book, Hidden Fire, is due for release by Whiskey Creek Press. I've also been offered the position of Director of Education for an online author school. In addition, I'll continue to write articles, edit manuscripts and coach writers. Many fascinating opportunities are on the horizon, and I plan to stay busy. But my heart, soul and roots remain planted firmly in Scribe & Quill. They always will! As you already know, Scribe & Quill no longer publishes monthly. Because of my work schedule and other obligations, I decided to publish the newsletter four times a year, rather than twelve. It's possible that, in the future, the newsletter may go monthly again, but I don't foresee it at this time. However, Scribe & Quill will continue publication through 2009 and beyond--just as it has (in some form or another) since 1997. I can't believe we're going into our 12th year of publication! That's a mind-blower for sure! As an addition to our services for the new year, my husband, who is a professional videographer and video editor, is offering his book promo video services to authors of all genres. For a limited time, Scribe & Quill readers/subscribers will receive a discounted rate. Most authors can't afford to sink $500 or more into a single book video promo, which is why my husband decided to launch Paul's Promos, a book video design service that offers an affordable alternative for those of us who have limited funds, but who still want and need a quality book promo. To receive a quote, e-mail Paul at paulspromos@gmail.com or visit his MySpace profile to view samples of book videos he's already created. Scribe & Quill's first quarterly issue of 2009 will be linked on the home page as well as available at our Zinester page. For previous issues, visit our Archives section. Our quarterly issues for 2009 will be Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. The Web site is always under revision, so be sure to clear your cache and refresh your browser each time you visit. Please note the addresses of our TWO official sites are: http://www.scribequill.net and http://www.scribequill.org The .com site is no longer associated with the original Scribe & Quill. It was yanked out from beneath us and now some person or company I don't even know owns the domain. So if you see anything going on over at the .com site, it's not the original Scribe & Quill and I have nothing to do with that domain. If you're a first-time visitor to Scribe & Quill, here are some pages you might want to visit: To access the Media Kit: http://scribequill.net/media.htmlFor guidelines, visit: http://scribequill.net/guidelines.htmlFor advertising, visit: http://scribequill.net/advertise.htmlArchived issues (from 2005-2008) can be located at: http://scribequill.net/archives.htmlS & Q has an opt-in subscriber list of over 6,000. I hope we will not only keep our current subscribers, but build upon that base over the coming year. As the new year dawns, I want to thank each and every one of you for your subscriber-ship and submissions. Now I present to you the 2009 journey of Scribe & Quill. ;-) Questions? Get Known Before the Book Deal video promo
Hey guys! I'm UP from bed on my first day out of doc-prescribed bed rest! Woot! Next, Paul did this book promotional video for Christina Katz, author of Writer Mama and Get Known Before the Book Deal. She's a fellow Writer's Digest author and a colleague of mine. Here's the book promo video Paul did for her latest book. If any authors out there want a cost-effective, broadcast-quality book promo video done, just e-mail my husband directly at paulspromos@gmail.com. Let him know you're a friend/colleague of mine and you'll get a special one-time rate. :-) Finally, I have a copy of Christina's book and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT for anyone who's working on publishing a book (regardless of where you are on the journey). It teaches you how to develop your own personal author platform and how to grow (and maintain) your career as an author. Great stuff! Resurrection and rebirth for 2008 Over the past year or so, I toyed with the idea of whether or not I wanted to continue publishing Scribe & Quill. Not that I don't love it, but since fall of 2006 when my first book, Sun Signs for Writers (Writer's Digest Books), came out, followed by Mending Fences (Whiskey Creek Press) a month afterward, I got pretty darned busy.
I quickly discovered the easiest part is writing a book; the hard part is marketing and promotion. It's time-consuming and tedious. On top of that came the advent of two organizations I co-founded (IOHP and CSPA). Needless to say, my time became very limited. If I wasn't writing and editing, I was promoting and marketing. The latter involved some traveling, including a trip to the 2006 BookExpo America in Washington, D.C. It was all fun, but incredibly exhausting!
I needed time to work on my own stuff and pursue my own career and interests, along with tending to my personal life and relationships. In my world, family and relationships come first -- always. Then work, then some relaxation here and there. I'm prone to be a workaholic, so I had to learn last year that it's okay to take time off and enjoy life. I discovered I'm more productive when I allow myself play time.
Actually, now that I think about it, my limited time began in August of 2005 when my first co-authored book, The Complete Writer: A Guide To Tapping Your Full Potential was published. Then I met my fiance Paul in November of 2005, which limited my time even more because I was in a relationship on top of everything else. (Incidentally, we're getting married in August of this year, so along with other changes, my name will be changing as well.)
After much deliberation (and some teeth gnashing), I decided that I couldn't just let Scribe & Quill fade away. It's been part of my writer's soul since 1997. Although I can't publish it more than quarterly -- not with all the things I have going on in my professional and personal life -- I can at least get it out four times a year. I first launched S & Q on ListBot in 1997 and it seems a darn shame to allow it to fade away in the 11th year. That just seems wrong. An abbreviated and less-frequent version seems much better than no version. At least to me.
So herewith, I'm resurrecting and revising the site as well as the first issue of 2008.
The Web site's still undergoing revisions, etc., but it's getting there. I spent quite a few hours tonight going through the site and updating various areas. There's more to be done. Much more. But it's a good start.
Scribe & Quill's first quarterly issue of 2008 will be released just any time now. I hope you'll enjoy the first offering of this year.
For now, you'll notice our new banner at the top of this note. I've also spent hours working on the site this evening. Actually there are TWO sites: http://www.scribequill.net and http://www.scribequill.org. The dot-com site is no longer associated with the original Scribe & Quill. It was yanked out from beneath me and now some person or company I don't even know owns the domain. So if you see anything going on over at the .com site, it's not the original Scribe & Quill and I have nothing to do with that domain.
Meantime, here are some updated pages you might want to look at: To access the Media Kit: http://scribequill.net/media.html
For guidelines, visit: http://scribequill.net/guidelines.html
For advertising, visit: http://scribequill.net/advertise.html
Archived issues (from 2005-2007) can be located at: http://scribequill.net/archives.html
As of today, S & Q has an opt-in subscriber list of 6,362. I hope we will not only keep our current subscribers, but build upon that base over the year.
Before I close, I want to thank each and every one of you for your subscriber-ship and submissions. I've got a few more ideas and revisions up my sleeve for this year, but let's just take it one step at a time.
For now, I present to you the 2008 journey of Scribe & Quill. ;-)

Who's your root guru?
Hi everyone! Scribe & Quill is launching a new feature for 2008. The brainchild of Assistant Editor Mindy Phillips Lawrence, we want to know who your root guru was. Who inspired you as a writer? Let us know by December 31, 2007. Your answers will be published in one of Scribe & Quill's newsletter in 2008! WHO’S YOUR ROOT GURU? By Mindy Phillips Lawrence A few days ago, I listened to a co-worker talk about her granddaughter’s language arts teacher. She said the woman was inspiring, creative and made her eighth grade students work hard at writing. As a former English teacher myself, I was happy to hear such positive statements about an instructor. I began to think how much we owe our teachers, especially the ones that motivate us for a lifetime. One of my former instructors I consider my root guru of writing. Another primed my pump when I’d gone dry. I still communicate with both of them and thank them from the bottom of my heart for their tutelage. Here’s YOUR chance to tell Scribe and Quill who you consider your root teacher of writing. Who motivated you to develop your love of words? What methods did they use that were so memorable? Send your answers to scribequill@gmail.com and we will post as many as possible. Let’s name names and give some credit to our unsung teachers. Deadline for your submission is December 31, 2007. ------- Your name or pseudonym: ________________________________________ __ The genre(s) in which you write: ______________________________________ (1) What teacher or instructor motivated and taught you the most about writing? (2) How did this person motivate you? (3) Are you still in contact with that person? If not, how long has it been since you (4) Have you ever thanked him or her for the foundational lessons they taught you that made you a writer? If not, why not? Scribe and Quill is excited to hear your comments about your “root guru” of writing. This is your chance to show your thanks! ### Current Mood: working | | Sunday, October 7th, 2007 | 10:23 pm [elementalmuse]
